WHO WE ARE:
We are Ken & Gina and we started making OKportugal videos back in 2019 when we decided to leave the hustle and bustle of the UK for a quieter life on a farm in Central Portugal. Our videos are journal for us to look back on one day and we are really happy that so many others are enjoying following and watching our journey too.
We currently live on our amazing 3.5 hectare farm in Central Portugal along with our cats, Nanook & Mecho and our two dogs, DogDog and Mimosa.

Beautiful garden! Believe it or not if you move the fly traps away from your door it will draw the flies away. When you set a trap next to you you will draw them to you. Make sense? It was so amusing to see the chickens running to Gina when she called them!!!

Thanks 😊. The flytraps are about 15 metres from our house. The manufacturer says to put them 10 metres away from the area you want to keep fly free

First I would like to say how much I LOVE your videos! I’m slowly catching up with your adventure by watching your older post. They allow me to see and learn more about a country I would like to visit but, most likely will not be able to. Gina! So happy you are learning to knit! It is a fun and rewarding hobby.. you will find that the knitters are a very open and encouraging community.. Ken will love tagging along to meet ups ( once we can again) because I never realized how much beer and knitting go together (at least here in the US)! I’m casting on my first new project in a year.. new granddaughter has been taking up my time

Personally I prefer drip feed to spraying. The water goes directly to the roots and you do not get scorch from water on the leaves. It is cool and grey here in the UK so I do envy your sunshine.

We did buy drip hose but the flower garden is so long and wide that the drips would have only covered a very small concentrated area and left large dry areas. The sprays seem to be doing the job OK :)

Waiting for season 4, not all these repeats ;-) . Always happy to see your new post show up in my feed. Traffic and parking in Cornwall is a nightmare just now. Love the sharp definition of your camera., the close up of the bee and flowers is fabulous. The plant Gina was looking to identify is some sort of nightshade, possibly a rogue potato.

When getting our farmhouse we also bought both bougainvillea and oleander the first thing we did. That's also how we found out that oleander are poisonous, when one of our cats wanted to try one of the leaves. She only did that once and is sticking to grass nowadays!

Every part of the oleander is deadly poisonous ... seeds, leaves, wood. Back in the 1960's a family braai in South Africa ended in many deaths because they used oleander twigs for kebabs. Just concerned for your chooks picking up the seeds.

@@OKportugal If you decide to dispose of the oleander, please don't burn it. The smoke is also poisonous. My neighbor's son ended up in the hospital because of smoke from poison ivy being burned.

I followed your channel since the very beginning and it’s been love at first sight. I’m so happy to see you guys are getting better at editing videos and also enjoying your farm life! You are an inspiration to me as last year I lived pretty much the same discomfort in being in London but not able to realise much. I started to dream big as well and make an exit plan with my partner to move to Portugal eventually 🇵🇹 Life here can be so overwhelming and definitely not healthy on a long run, and last year’s lockdown enlighten all this! August is the month a lot of European business shuts for holidays, so lots of Portuguese living abroad return to their villages, which is why parking becomes a nightmare

We have oleanders here in South Texas. They grow like weeds. Be warned they can grow very large. The kind we have here are used as hedge rows, bounder markers, ornamentals on highway medians. Not for next to the house. They flower year round. Green year round. Smell nice. Many different colors. The spiky bougainvillea are great for trellis, grapes good for trellis, climbing roses too but spikey also. Your flower garden is very pretty. For a small town Fundo was packed with cars and people that day.

Hi Ken get rid of those flytraps they actually attract the flies i fell in the same trap !Also if you have chooks expect to have flies ! I combat the flies by putting agri lime on my chicken coop floor every now and then also planted lemonbalm in pots allover the backyard ! Goodluck !

Thanks Francois, i will look into it. The flies are loads better than they were last year without the traps. We have a neighbouring sheep farm and cow farm on the other side... when there's no wind we have almost no flies but if the wind blows from either the cow or sheep farm direction it blows swarms of flies. Very annoying

While I spend a lot of time in the UK, I also have a home in India. I have grown bougainvillea over the boundary fences and it is pretty. I also have an oleander. They can grown to the size of a little tree. It is very pretty if you plant the pink and cream colours next to each other. Nice to see you putting your own stamp on the farm.

Loved the 4k macro shots, not into flowers or plants but I´m a sucker for detailed shots that showcase the cool wide color pallets in nature. Here are some fly removing tips: Wash your door and window frames with white vinegar (1/2 water 1/2 vinegar) Smash an Onion until you get the juice and mixed with water and spray it in the places where they gather the most Make a DIY coffee powder incense (fill a jar with coffee powder insert a candle wick and lit it, the smell of burning coffee usually drives them away, ideal for more confined spaces) Plant some Basil and Mint they really don't like the smell of it or if you prefer burn eucalyptus oil/ eucalyptus seeds But those crazy amounts of flies around attracted by the chicken poo it's gonna be hard.

When I heard the word oleander I went ooo! They are so very poisonous. Every part of them, to all animals and humans. I would be so scared the sweet chickies, pups or kitties would get hold of a leaf or blossom blown by the wind. Sometimes beautiful attractions equal fatal attractions.

@@OKportugal We had Orleander planted as shrub borders along walkways in Saudi Arabia. They were huge and stood over 7 ft tall. We all knew they were poisonous but like any shrub, you didn't go out and chew the leaves. With the pup -- my only concern would be her digging at the plant -- so would fence it in until she grew out of that phase. Understand your hesitancy with chainsaws. In my profession, I have seen some rather nasty accidents with them. BUT in the US, we now have mini chainsaws run on rechargeable batteries that are one handed use. They are extremely safe and have multiple safety measures. They are used to cut branches too large for a lopper and would come in handy to trim the trees over looking your dam. Do not know if they are available in Europe but would look for them on Amazon. Right now I am binge watching your channel lololol :o)

Ps mix the flies with flour and feed to your fish ( assuming your trap is pesticide free. ) now you will love flies - turning them into fish for the BBQ

You guys are pros already :) what a great episode but what struck and impressed me the most is the video and editing skills, they are so precise and well thought of, the timing, the quality, the variety, top professional (that is very pleasing to watch besides the content). This evolution has been very noticeable and I think it reached the place where everything is there, it really is spectacular and I'm not surprised your business of filming properties (or whatever you decide to film), is going to be a huge success - awesome quality. From all the great channels I follow (indie, frankie, etc.) the quality of yours is by far the best in my opinion. And you are both very natural in front of the camera. Love it.

nice pictures of the garden. Interesting that flowers, water and food makes you feel cooler in the hot weather, Its been in the 90F and over 100F for days in our sub-tropical area. I never thought I would look forward to winter ! it might help the fly situation to move the chickens. I see a nice cement pad a bit away from the house, which would make a nice foundation where you could build a fenced in chicken coop. Marten at " Our Portuguese homestead" made a nice one and so far they haven't had problem with predators.

I have plans to build a couple of paddocks in a far away field with some 6 ft fencing around to stop predators, move the chickens there as well as build a stables for some other animals. Unfortunately I do t think it'll help the flies too much as we have a dairy farm next door and on the other side a farmer keeping a lot of cows. When the wind blows you suddenly get hot with a cloud of flies every now and then

@@OKportugal I was thinking that by being further away, the flies wouldn't be as much of a bother for you near the house. of course they will always be around because of the cows,and sheep. Gerainium plants and Rosemary are good plants to ward off flies.as is sweet basil and Lavender.

The small, white-flowered and green.fruited weed is Black Nightshade in the family Solanaceae. I always take it out and add it to the fire pile (for burning in winter). Wikipedia details medicinal and toxic properties.

I think that plant with the green berries is a Solanum/potato vine the berries are poisonous but it has beautiful purple flowers

Hey Guys. Love watching from Bermuda 🇧🇲. We have all manner of tropical and subtropical plants and trees here, including Bougainvillea and Oleander. Both propagate easily if you wish to start your own plants. Keep on keeping on..🏝🇧🇲🇵🇹

Fly Management suggestion? Electronic Fly Zappers out in the Chickens yard and other heavy infiltration area of Pests. Flys and Asian Wasps that plague y’all. The Chickens will clean up. Will not interfere with Bats. Wow Gina so creative. Perhaps some citronella plants will add big medicinally as well as in your Bug Screens. Planted in your Lady Garden may help also. We live between two commercial dairies. Lavender too.

We bought an electronic zapper with three UV tubes inside and the flies landed all over the casing but never inside the killing zone of it to get zapped. Bizarre 😂 we gave up after about 2 weeks and it's now in our toolroom gathering dust.

I would love to walk the market.. I always do go to local markets whenever I visit a place..nothing better to soak up the vibe of society. Those flytraps work wonder...just buy more and put them everywhere...it's an inconvenience that can't be helped with so many farms with livestock around. Such an great idea that sprinkler system for the ladies garden..I just shared your video with my husband...a thing to have on our future "homestead"

Love the garden, can't wait to see the plants mature. We have two large farm markets nearby. If we go at the crack of dawn, crowds are much smaller. Or, waiting till near closing time. Vendors would rather sell then take things home. Usually get great deals on their remaining stock. I prefer the morning, I'm greedy and like sorting through the best stock. hehehehe. Have any of the locals recently spread manure? The only time flies are bad in Pennsylvania is manure season. Chicken and pig manure are absolute fly magnets!!!

Thanks Steve, we have a sheep farm to the east and a cow farm to the north and if the wind blows from either direction we get hit with a cloud of flies

9:54 That plant is Solanum nigrum = Erva-moura = Black nightshade, a species in the Solanaceae family, such as eggplant, tomato, chili pepper, potato, tobacco, belladonna... Like many plants in this family (even those that are edible), it contains solanine and nicotinoid alkaloids, which are toxic and more prevalent in its green berries and leaves. When cooking, the toxicity is reduced, but consumption is not recommended. On the other hand, it is true that Nerium oleander is a poisonous species, however it is native, frost and drought resistant, and so bitter that hardly any animal or child would linger on it for a long time or swallow it. . Your garden is looking pretty with all these flowers, however I must warn you that Mandevilla sanderi and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis are very tropical plants, too cold sensitive to withstand well the winters in your region. Both would have better chances if growing in pots placed against the sunny wall. And on exceptionally freezing nights, as happened this winter, they could be moved to the room where you store the fire wood. . You know, a few months ago, when you said you'd like to raise the farm's walled fence, I immediately thought that using bougainvilleas there would be a cheap and attractive solution! ;) There is a wide range of colors and you can reproduce them by cuttings!

I can't watch the video as I'm in a place that has limited bandwidth, but reading others comments on flies: If you can poo pick your henhouse daily, use lavender oil to scent the bedding or buy a ready scented one, flies don't like the smell of lavender, eucalyptus or citronella, I make up my own bug sprat using these essential oils, they dislike T tree oil too, but you have dogs and cats and T-tree is toxic to their nervous system. Essential oils work out much cheaper if you find an online bulk supplier. Can't wait to watch when I get home. Take care guys.

The garden is looking great . August is the worst month , everyone in Portugal is on holidays . The month is split in two , some goes on holidays in the first 15 days , then others in the second 15 days , plus also emigrants go back to Portugal to see their relatives and friends, or just simply holidays .

Be careful where you plant the oleander. It is a beautiful plant, we have heaps of them in Western Australia but they are highly poisonous to sheep or any stock for that matter.

Oleander are so dangerous to animals and pets. Be very careful. Fundão is lovely and it's market too. Ur garden is getting big. Keep cool and safe.

I forgot to add that Oleander thrives in hot dry weather. It can become invasive. The roots will break up cement so don’t put it near cement paths or houses!

Hi, Gina 👋🏼 Really nice salad, Ken! In San Francisco, my friends and i have a 20-minute rule: if we can't find parking in 20 minutes, we give up 😄. It was no big whoop to park far away and walk in when we were younger, but now that i'm older and a but stiff when i don't want to be it *is* nice to snag a spot closer to my destination 😊. How long does it actually take to get out your front gate considering all the neat shots of you getting into your car, the cool angles of the car going up the driveway, etc. I imagine you guys asking each other "Did you get the shot?" quite often. 😄

We've got the red top fly catchers (on your recommendation!) and they're brilliant and I think it is a question of breaking the breeding cycle as after 6 weeks we have very few flies - also great for the compost when full!!!

Oh brilliant, yes they are working great for us too but for the last few days we have had strong winds and i think thats blown in a few swarms of flies from the neighbouring sheep and cow farms. We will have a few hours fly free, then a gust of wind and loads of flies. The traps are bursting with flies though, so they are working well

@@annar6430 haha yes youre right... or Sagres beer! the bees are fine, the traps dont catch mosquitoes but the goldfish are eating most of the larvae so they arent too much of an issue

Thanks Jan, we noticed a huge improvement in the flies since last year when we had no traps. Unfortunately as we have a sheep farm to one side and a cow farm on the other there's a lot of flies that arrive in clouds on the farm every time the wind blows in either direction.

Please take care with the oleander. It is the most poisonous garden plant. Make sure the dogs or chickens won't chew a leaf. And you should be very careful of any sap too. 🙏🙏

@@OKportugal they are all over Greece too. I seem to remember a case where children used a stick from an oleander to make "stokbrood" over a fire and they died from poisoning.

That weed with the tomato like berries grew under my orange tree in aus it had orange coloured berries it I feel reminds me of “deadly nightshade “ though it has black fruit pods same family “weediz painiz” lol

(Moira Ashton) Oh those beautiful flowers, I have 4 of those Diplodenias, they are gorgeous, every part of the Oliander is poisonous , but then so are a lot of garden plants...your Lady garden looks soooo pretty,,.. the chickens always make me laugh when they run, ...41c here today, 🥵🥵🥵 xxxx

I look at you digging the Veggie garden . Bent over planting ,weeding , cropping . And I cant help thinking about having a Polly tunnel with raised beds and using aquaculture ? I know a poly tunnel will bring issues during the hot part of the year ,but I think that could be in part solved with the shade netting that seems to be available out there . ? I would love to be out there and give it a try !

This was just a flower garden to keep the front of the house a bit cooler and in shade. We have a greenhouse frame that i will wrap in a clingfilm type plastic and see if we can use it to extend the growing season into the winter. Im not sure about raised beds yet as we have so much soil and space around us for planting but maybe in future :)

Hello there, Ken and Gina. Just a heads-up. The oleander plant is beautiful but very poisonous. We have removed all oleander plants from our garden, particularly as we have pets. You may want to research it. Here's some information I found on it, as a start. "All parts of Nerium oleander - leaves, flowers, stems, twigs, roots - are toxic, and oleander poisoning can affect the heart, nervous system, stomach and intestines, eyes and skin. Keep children and pets away from the shrubs."

Be careful with the Oleanders, every part leaves, flowers, sap are poisonous (oxalates I think). Keep them away from your bees.

The are called Red Top fly traps and we got them on Amazon 👌 they work really well but they must be situated at least 10-15 metres away from your living areas as the really attract flies 😅

Beware the plant with the green berries. The berries will probably turn black when mature. From the quick peek that we saw I would say that is one of the Nightshade family.
