The first of the Autumn / Winter storms has arrived with loads of rain and freezing cold weather. We have a bit of flooding on the farm and we have a few problems with one of our Beehives which has an infestation of wax moths!

Dear Ken, I am still trying to clean up the mess in my patio and varandas thanks to all my plants in big pots and 4 days of rain here in Ribatejo. The Winter in Portugal is wet, wet, but we all need the rain. Poor doggie, honestly guys, please contact the GNR post nearest you. That is animal abuse, and it's a crime. If you do not wish to get the police involved, you can also contact the Malcata Animal Rescue Associação, to see if they can take the dog away from that awful situation. They are on FB, and are a wonderful group founded by UK residents in Portugal. Keep dry and healthy both of you.
@OKportugal

Thank you Maria :) Yes we know the Malcata Animal Association and did a video for them a few weeks back. We went back a few hours later to bring the dog a kennel shelter but it had moved on. It had broken its chains so I think it either ran away or the owner moved it out of the rains. Very sad.

Probably to stop flooding your land you may have to build small channels to drainage the fields. Also the fly catcher takes some time for the flies to be attracted but soon you have a bunch of flies trapped and dead inside the smell will attract a ton of flies but will smell really bad.

Feed that dog a couple times a day and ask her to get closer to you each day. After about a week you should be able to take the kennel in there. Or if nothing else just drop it over the fence line and she can get in it when she wants.

Portugal doesn't do drizzle. When it rains, it really rains. To highlight, Lisbon has an average of nearly 73cm of rain per year, rainy London and Paris 56cm and 64cm respectively. The big difference is Lisbon only has 77 wet days, London 109 days, Paris 111 days per year. Great video on so many levels. Probably your best.

I’ve been travelling to Portugal from Uk since 2011 and I absolutely love everything. I’m planning to buy a property in Portugal hopefully next years if everything goes Uk. I want to buy property around Porto region as that’s my favourite city but after watching your videos I’m thinking move bit further and have a property with farm. I’ve never stayed in Portuguese villages and would love to experience that before making the decision if that’s a right idea for me to buy there. I wanted to ask you that if I could come over stay in your farm for few days and get to know the farm life if that’s possible? In return I’m willing to give you a helping hand in farm or anything you need to do. I know that you’ve made it clear that u don’t want bunch of strangers invading your privacy but this will be more like back packing experience for me and by talking to you I would get the wealth of knowledge and will definitely help me decide where to buy in Portugal. Please let me know if interested. If you would like to know more about me I can definitely tell you that over the phone or in an private email. Cheers 👍🏽

I made a fly trap similar to the one you made and I used a raw egg mixed with a bit of water. The egg rottens after a short while and flies are attracted to its smell. They go to the water and stay there. Eventually they sink and I caught hundreds of flies in 2 or 3 days. There were layers of flies. But I made much smaller holes than you. Actually, I just used a knife to start a hole and then a simple Philips screwdriver to make 4 small circular holes near the top, not more than 4 or 5mm diameter each. That's enough for them to get in but they don't find the way out. I had a feeling your holes were too big, fairly easy for the flies to find the way out, but I could be wrong.

It really broke our hearts watching that dog , poor thing , no shelter and no food , im glad you guys gave him food , and people already gave the info you guys need how to act .We do have laws against mistreating animals!! "Lagostin" , not good to have around ,as they at night will attack your vegetable garden and eat your vegetables , but they are good to eat (exactly like see food ) . I remember to go with my dad and uncle to the big reservoir ( Barragem de Santa Clara ) with bits of Cod fish inside a net and catch loads of those big ones"Lavagante" and then cook them same way as the Lobster , very nice .

I have a bit of experience with beekeeping in Alentejo. You should stop feeding that hive. The bees are just taking the sugar you give them and putting it in honeycombs that then they have to guard against the moths. Right now they should have enough eucalyptus and wildflowers to keep them busy. That hive with that few bees shouldn't have to guard all that frame area. May be a good idea to invest in a couple 5 frame nucleus, or cut a vertical plywood excluder and let them occupy only half the hive, taking the extra frames out. That said they look fine and healthy and should grow quite nicely in winter. If they ever need feeding, as in they're on their last square inches of honeycomb, use solid feed. Liquid feed at this time up to March may result in several gut maladies. It's very common to see North European make this mistake but I always tell them in beekeeping Summer is our Winter. That's when bee-eater birds keep bees stuck inside the hives for 2 months. Winter is at most 3 weeks of rainy days mostly concentrated in December. [person that sold you those hives should know better and shame on them] Anyways. That's my beekeeper nerd-out lecture for today. Cheers.

In South Africa we have a brand called Red Top Fly Catcher which is the most effective method I have ever seen. Check it out on online. They claim to catch 20 000 flies in 3 days, and I can vouch that has been my experience also. Once the flies go in they can’t get out - simple but effective design. The magic is also in the concoction which attracts them. Worth finding out if Red Top exports to EU. If not, they should.

We havent quite done one full year yet here on the farm but from what I have seen yes we should be able to grow some things throughout the year (obviously not summer, sunny crops in winter though)... seasonal things. It does get cold and there can be frost but its not for long like we are using to in the UK. We will see :)

Regarding that poor dog, the right action would be to call the police. There are laws against animal cruelty and this could be considered as such. One of these laws, 69/2014 (link below) says "Quem, sem motivo legítimo, infligir dor, sofrimento ou quaisquer outros maus tratos físicos a um animal de companhia é punido com pena de prisão até um ano ou com pena de multa até 120 dias.". Rough translation: "those who, without a legitimate reason, inflicts pain, suffering or any other physical harm to a "company animal" is punished with imprisonment until 1 year or a penalty until 120 days". A dog is considered a "company animal" in this regard, as per the same law. dre.pt/pesquisa/-/search/56384878/details/maximized

Wow...nice winter days... Rui Oliveira provided you with some excellent information. You may want to keep the information for future use also. Sometime ago, I had encouraged you to find the local law enforcement agency that provides the service of protection to people as well as animals in your region, most likely it will be a branch of the GNR (they are the state police) ...... how’s your Portuguese coming along?.....good possibility some of them GNR members may speak some English.....either way, photos speak a million words...quite obvious the animal is undernourished, no shelter, definitely an older dog that appears (physically) to have had a few puppy litters. Keep in mind that cruel people are everywhere and Portugal is no exception, as well as retaliation. So, having good connections with law enforcement is advisable.....learning the language is a must!, learning the people and their costumes, priceless. Looks like having some good stiff boards to place across the water tank top and cut the grapes out of it maybe a good choice, prevent unwanted debris in your water tank as well as bugs....wasps not a good alternative. Well, farm life at its best, don’t look like mimo and Dogdog had a problem playing in the rain..
@OKportugal
@OKportugal 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Our language learning has slowed down as the weather is not so good, so we aren't out and about as much and of course there is the stigma of covid, so there are not really any public events to meet locals and practice the language. Don't worry though as we are learning a few words each day and its coming along. It is a very difficult language though. Mimo and DogDog are having their best life ever. :)

@@OKportugal you are right, Portuguese is a very difficult language, it’s basis is the Latin, but if you can brush on French, Italian and even Spanish, Portuguese will be real easy.....I lived in Luxembourg for 4 years and had to attend school, French came on easy but German was very difficult for me as well as my sister.....but don’t despair, you will learn.... you must learn, ability to communicate with the locals is a must. Sorry but I don’t know how else to put it.....pretty much like all the poor Portuguese people that made it to the UK....they had to learn English, no 2 ways about it...the most successful Portuguese that arrived the UK, most likely they had already learned English in the Portuguese schools....or else they will subject themselves to the minimal physical labor......

We get around 30mb download and 10mb upload though. The cost was about 35 euros a month and you get satellite TV with 90 channels included (most channels are in English too). We have added on 2 mobile phone contracts to this and pay 78 euros a month for the whole package now. Im impressed that we can get such good cheap Internet out on our farm.
