PC case design has changed a lot over the years. While reminiscing about the cool top loading SATA bay of my old Cooler Master 690 II Advanced on Twitter, ICY DOCK reached and offered a PC case enclosure which allows you to swap hard drives and SSDs like you could with floppy disks.

Hotswapping drives has always been an amazing thing for datahoarders like myself. What's puzzling for me is the wasted space where the 5.25" bays used to be in cases. its a natural progression move all harddrives and storage devices into what used to be the 5.25 bay area's and fee up the bottom of the case for pumps, reservious, radiations and PSU's.

Back in the early 2000's, pre-builds with hot swappable HDD are the coolest thing back then, because back then there is no RGB, see-trough panel, even top of the line "Gaming PC" are look the same as typical office PC.

You would like my Coolermaster HAF XM, which has two SATA "hotswap" removable HDD caddies that the control board allows freely pulling and fitting any SATA HDD's on the fly, it also enables the ability to run extra HDD's as the case can hold up to ten storage drives as well as 3 opticals. The drives both the hot swap and the fixed ones are cooled by a massive 240mm fan, I have 1 nvme SSD and 4 HDD's running at mo with two in the hot swap caddies as I can use them for extra storage in another machine.

Used a similar product 15 or so years ago. It was USB based, had trays that the 3.5” drives fit in. It worked well. I used the product for doing backups. I like this product. It’s an upgrade to what I had. I had to be careful with the HDD’s - fragile. With SSD’s you don’t have to be quite as careful. Good review.

I have been looking for some cheap 5.25'' bays for hotswappable games drives between systems for testing. I do have a really old ICY Dock 3.5'' one which sits flush when you hook it in, but i need a kensington lock to unlock the fan and activity lights but it does still work. I think with cases with front covers or any, the protrusion especially the 2.5" for me is a gamebreaker. it would have been nice if it was flush so i don't accidentally knock it. Just wish the price was a little lower for what is a 5.25" bay cage with sata slots considering someone may buy multiple to hotswap between a main and other computer(s).

@SirReptitious

It is SO hard to find functional cases now, since 99% of cases are made with glass sides and enough RGB LEDs to light a xmas tree. Unfortunately that's what sells, so even though it's mostly adults who buy and build, it appears most adults jizz their pants over the glass and LEDs like a 11yr old boy.... :-( I am NOT looking forward to the next time I have to buy a case, that's for sure. I'm going to keep re-using the two Thermaltake midtowers I have had for years for as long as possible, because they ARE functional.

ha ! great to see my Antec 900 (mine is the USB 2 model) . in my Antec 900, i have a Thermaltake N0023SN Max 4, for a 3.5" drive and a Vantec NexStar SE mrk-525st, to take 2 x 2.5" drives. very old system that i rescued from the ewaste at work back in 2011, it rocks an original i7 and an ASUS MoBo that is only SATA 2. But it is still fairly reliable and runs both my Linux Mint and Windows 10. because of the ease of swapping the 2.5" SSD's from the Vantec drive bay, i can switch OS's in under a minute, INCLUDING REBOOT !! i could also install W10 on an additional SSD for the boy to run his own OS for gaming, on the same rig without buying another rig and not giving him access to my W10 to keep the bugs away.

Personally I prefer SATA over USB. I have many HDDs, especially 3,5" high capacity, using hot swap since many years. With all of my motherboeards and most additional PCIe to SATA cards SATA Hot Plug is very stable while USB like to disconnect. The MB795SP looks a bit cheap IMHO, I prefer the IB-174SSK-U (or many very similar competitors products), which I use for years at my job. Only disadvantages are there´s only one switch for 2,5 and 3,5. But keep in mind that a 7200rpm 3,5" HDD gets maybe to warm in a longer run. In this case I like the big IPC ST-3525 with cooling fan Strange thing in your review is the low write speed, normally I would think if I have 2 SATA connectors there are a direct contact and not some kind of bridge chip

@@FullyBuffered what i've been wanting to do is a rdx imation type thing, but open standard format using laptop ssd or mechanical drives inside a full size hdd shell, problem is finding a hotswap tray shell/enclosure that has shock absorption like the rdx cartridges have. This would minimize the wear on the drive connectors from the in and out ports and keep the drive safer, not to mention the metal shell can pull some heat. Do you know of a good combo to do this. And can you recommend a hot swap dock for internal install as well as a good solid stand alone desk top solution (i'm a metal construction fan like you). Thanks in advance.

So I modded one of these by literally just prying out the plastic bit inside the sata connector that stops a SAS drive being inserted into this enclosure and it works perfectly obviously with a SAS controller and that gives me hot swappable SAS/SATA out of the server im using with along with a LTO tape drive really useful to move data from/to but it's a shame icy dock didn't make it SAS compatible out of the box :(

Is there anything that locks or holds the drive in place once you turn the power on? I'd be concerned that if the pc isn't completely flat, and so the front might be angled down slightly then the vibration could cause the drive to slide out of the connection while in use.

Yeah I totally got a pile of cheap notebook 2.5 hdds and label stickers for storing movies on and I use them like floppies. Right now 500GB notebook drives are cheapers storage per GB, even cheaper than burning blu ray and much faster. I got much nicer HDD bay though, this one looks super cheap and flimsy.

I have a friend who gave me ~75 500GB hard drives from retired laptops. My case has a built-in SATA dock for 3.5 and 2.5 drives. I use the drives to back up all the TV series and movies that have come out since I stopped buying DVDs/Blu-Rays onto. I have a 5.25" bay converter from Athena Power that fits 4 2.5" drives. It's all metal and the drives have to be screwed onto small sleds and then slid into the unit. Originally I was going to put 4 of the 500GB laptop drives in it, but then decided to put my 240GB boot SSD and 3 2TB SSDs in it instead. It has worked perfectly, but I never use the swap ability. I think if they were used for swapping a lot, the SATA connections wouldn't take a long time to wear out, but that is just my guess. I got mine when it was on sale for an insanely low price at Newegg. I have another free 5.25" bay and wish I knew how much I was going to love it so I would have ordered two instead. The regular price of all these 5.25/3.5" converters are too expensive IMHO.....

As long as you are using the motherboard's SATA ports it should definitely work. It's when you get into using PCI-e SATA cards that it becomes a game of some do/some don't. I have a PCI-e SATA card with 4 drives connected to it, but have never tried booting from them. My boot SSD is connected to the motherboard SATA. But I know that the card supports ACPI, so it would work with a unit like the one in this video.

I've been using what I guess is a knock-off by 'Icybox', also 2.5" and 3.5", which seems to have been discontinued (can only see single bay versions now). It's held up with light use, I'd guess a few dozen insert/eject cycles of both bays over about 6 months. One caveat is that if both are used simultaneously the 2.5" drive (the upper bay) can get too warm for comfort (only tried that once). Apart from offline storage I use it for defragmentation - actual defragging is something I've _never_ done and might be part of the reason I've never had an HDD fail in 23-odd years since I started using and building PC's - it absolutely hammers the read arm. Instead I just the copy the entire contents to another drive (and back if needed). Back in the day (i.e. when PC's were beige) 5.25" HDD caddies were very common (out of necessity given their capacity).
