Aemma Arryn, for being in only one episode, has had a great impact on the show. It's one thing for GRRM to write "she died in childbirth" but to actually see it and to feel the weight of Viserys' decision and to experience his grief adds so much character to him.
@TheAstroWitchLux
@TheAstroWitchLux Жыл бұрын
Yep, from history doccos I knew it was the husband's choice, not the woman's, whether to kill her to save the baby, and caesarean section was performed without anaesthetic. (Kinda handy for husbands who hated their wives, but that's off topic as Viserys clearly isn't that way at all, he just wants a stable kingdom and is a man of his society. His grief could be because he told them to kill her without giving her a choice). Anyhoo, I knew it happened. But to see it onscreen, even a quuck, sanitised version with a kind, loving husband and a swift operation, made me realise what actually happened to all of those women throughout history. Including Julius Caesar's mother.
@theperson8539
@theperson8539 Жыл бұрын
@@TheAstroWitchLux I don’t think it’s quite that simple, history doesn’t ever paint a cohesive narrative for the sake of consistency, unless that is somehow the motivation for the actors in major or minor events. Also, I think there was a fair bit of nuance in the decision, like the King’s self-image, his perception of his worth. If a male heir isn’t what is needed, what of his legitimacy? His rule? Also, not being a medical professional, I still feel like Aemma surviving feels unlikely. The water was broken, the baby was in breach, the best I can think of is literally trying to somehow cut up the baby, and remove it piece by piece… which not only sounds absolutely messed up but also a horrible idea that would be unlikely to work. Other than that, both would probably die, actually, Aemma would likely have died either way. Technically speaking, it was that most logical choice if you were trying to save the most lives (more than zero in this case), it was just presented and conducted in a way that was horrible.

Funniest part of this show is how they basically removed season 8 from canon. King Viserys says that Aegon the Conqueror had a vision of the Long Night and saw that only a united Westeros could defeat the coming darkness...but that's not at all how the Game of Thrones TV show ended. It makes me suspect that the show is foreshadowing book canon because that entire speech seemed to pointedly deny the existence of Season 8

"Aegon also had a bizarre trip after eating some weird mushrooms where everything goes to shit, it's every kingdom for itself and we end up with an elective monarchy resulting in endless civil war. So now bringing a dragon beyond the wall or ringing a city's bells to surrender is a capital offense for some reason. He also banished the Maester who gave him the mushrooms to Naath where he shall meet a gruesome butterfly-related end. A major thing to note about the big lore drop toward the end of the episode, before a bunch of people attack the show for breaking the lore, the show runners and George himself said that adding that detail on was George's idea and George said that some things in the books haven't been revealed because there are still 2 books unreleased. So.. This lore comes from the author's mouth so no one can fault the show for it.

Yeah, at times it really does feel like many people seem to forget that there are still two books that have not been released. We can call anything we see in the shows (either GOT or HOTD) "fanservice" or "breaking the canon", but in the end, we have no way of knowing whether it was really just an asspull for fanservice, or something George actually had in mind but was planned to appear in one of the next two books. And personally, I've always felt that "the song of ice and fire", in the context in which Rhaegar says it in the books, was just some weird poetic-sounding bullshit he made up the moment Aegon was born in order to confuse Elia (and Daenerys). I've always thought it couldn't JUST be that, that there was more to it. "The song of ice and fire" being an actual Targaryen prophecy/dream that drove Aegon to conquer Westeros basically from one day to the other? An actual prophecy that drives Rhaegar's actions? Hell, an actual prophecy that MAY even have driven some other Targaryen kings and heirs to do the unthinkable out of some sort of desperation, like Aegon V at Summerhall? I can get behind that.

Matt Smith was the standout for me. Daemon is kind of a heel in the source material, and he could easily be a one-note portrayal but Smith brings a depth to the character that I hadn't expected. Like when he's being confronted for "Heir For A Day", you see shame flicker across his face and for a moment he looks like a contrite little brother. Paddy Considine is definitely also incredible. Even when Viserys tries to be imposing and royal you get the sense that it's not a role he (Viserys the character) is comfortable with, which is great. Another thing I really want to gush about is how kinetic and violent the tourney scenes felt. When the knights reach the end of the lists, and pivot round and replace their lances in one fluid motion, it really makes you understand why medieval battlefields were dominated by mounted knights.

I was very satisfied with the first episode. 9/10 from me. What stood out to me the most was that we were actually getting proper dialogue and character moments again! After the mind-numbing "i dun want it" and "muh queen" of Season 8, it's so refreshing to get something a little more stimulating.

My thoughts on the line at the end is that this is directly from George. I've always wondered what made Rhaegar suddenly so sure he had to be a warrior and that his children were destined to save Westeros. I had long suspected that Blood Raven and Aemon were in contact over the years through the ravens and now I think it's highly likely that as the Others started increasing activity, Blood Raven would have been looking into ways to defeat them and likely started looking back. I think in doing so he may have stumbled on this prophecy while witnessing Aegon telling others of his vision and passed it on to Aemon with a warning of what was coming, who then conveyed it to Rhaegar as they were also known to be in regular contact. Rhaegar may have felt the need to verify the information and that could be what sent him searching through the scrolls where he found the confirmation he needed. I think it's likely that the prophecy was previously passed down heir-to-heir but this tradition was interrupted by the Dance of the Dragons and the upending of the house that followed it.

It also isnt coming completely out of the blue. George has brought this theory up a bunch of times, and even some parts of ASOIAF strongly hints to this being the case. George directly brought up this theory at least two years ago too

My biggest real complaint was that they basically did nothing with the Great Council of 101. More for the actors sake than anything else, cos that looked extensive as hell to set up for something that could have been solved with some stained glass imagery or something like the DVD history and lore sections. 😂

Don't know what to think. Liked it overall, but I don't want to put all of my eggs in this one basket. Depends how the season goes. But I am not expecting it to get worse; I did enjoy the episode. Matt Smith has impressed me, as well as Rhys Ifans. Here's to next week.

I've had a think on it and I do believe the lore discussed at the end of HOTD episode one would be better suited to think of as the different predictions of the end of the world rather like is discussed over and over in our real timelines (Y2k, the December 21, 2012 of the Mayan Calendar, the mass extinction of 1995, etc.) as different cultures predict different outcomes throughout the plot (the ghost grass of Asshai overtaking everything by the Dothraki, the evil cold darkness that will fall on the world in the religion of R'hllor, the dreams that plague the Targaryens and are further cemented when something like the Doom of Valyria happened after the Targaryens immigrated, etc.)

Hadnt re-read Fire and Blood since it came out. Before the show premiered I started with the Heirs of the Dragon chapter in the book and got to the beginning of the Dance before watching the pilot. Seems like it will be more fateful to the source material; not that hard given that its a couple hundred pages of a history book. I'm excited to be a fan again and that is the best part.

That exchange between Daemon and Viserys on the throne. Daemon says Viserys is weak, but damn, when he said “You will address me as Your Grace or I will have my Kinsguard cut out your tongue” while holding non other than Blackfyre, Aegon’s legendary sword. Beautiful stuff.

Yeah, this was pretty good. I had extremely low expectations going into this after the complete garbage that we got with seasons 7 and 8, but it was pretty damn good. There are some small things that bothered me, but overall I liked it. It could end up sucking ass, but this is a really good start. And as someone that loved Ramin Djawadi's work in GOT and as someone that also believes that his music was one of the only good things about the last 2 seasons, I love it in HOTD. Hearing the music build up to seeing a dragon again already had me hyped. 9.5/10 for the actors, 9.5/10 for the characters, 8.5/10 for storytelling, 10/10 for costume design, 11/10 for the dragons, 27/10 for the soundtrack. I just hope they don't fuck it up.
