Once you have fixed the problem, start the engine, and run it up to temperature. Let it cool, then repeat. The third time you do this, if there are no more faults, the light will go out. I've done this with three different makes of vehicle. It works!

I have a 2000 toyota avalon.. and my engine light and VSC light was on.. when i tried to remove the negative battery cable and then reattach it .. all the lights are off now.. thank you. might have saved me thousands in cost since mechanics are so expensive these days .. cheers brother

This method varies from manufacturer and by model, Some cars that are make, model, year, engine, identical can have different sw versions which this would work on one and not the other, If you got the tools to fix a vehicle buy a obd code reader for less then what a spanner costs Also pending dtc's that make the eml come on do tend to self clear after the battery pull but alot of hard codes will not, best to take both battery terminals off and discharge the electrical system as alot of capacitors within the ecm's that hold charge , Can take up to 12 hours for them to totally discharge This is common with vw group vehicles and other brands, Also i noticed you kept tapping the negative terminal against the socket and battery terminal, your surging the electrical systems and they dont like that can cause all sorts of eeprom errors which can make electrical systems act pocessed, mess up displayed mileage, Jam immobiliser systems,

Worked! On my Honda CRV 2007 model. I had the starter replaced and the light was on when I got my car back from the Mom&Pop garage that did the repair. No more light on!

in some cars, specially those 2014 onward, a non-volatile flash memory is used in the ECU to store the codes. it is similar to your usb flash drive. your usb flash drive doesn't lose the data on it when you pull it off the computer and cut the 5 volt on its pins, so is it with these flash memories in the ECUs these days. power cut and drainage no longer work they used to.

The best way to reset the light is just removing the bulb, casually it is a focus, same as mine, I remember I had a dodge caravan with same light issue and I just stuck a black tape above and it was all, this light had me nervous and once I covered it with black tape, I finally forgot about it and the car never gave me any problem ever, late in 80's cars did not have a check engine light and we used to drive so happy, nowadays there is a light for any stupid thing that won't let us drive in peace

Could be something wrong with the monitoring sensor that tells you the mileage based on how fast you drive. I had that problem, and I noticed that my mileage sensor seemed to be stuck on 27 miles per gallon, when I know I get more. Often, it should vary depending upon highway versus street driving.

It worked for my Chevy Cruze. When I first took off the negative and tap it three times on the terminal. But when I turn it off and restart it came back on. I then tried the second example of removing the negative wire and hold down the battery. After replacing the wire and restart it disappear. I turn it off and back on again and it didn't appear. But I think this is just a temporary fix. I will know when I turn it on later.

I had a 2006 Nissan frontier and the only time, in 11 years, that the check engine light came on was when I needed to replace a spark plug coil. My 2016 frontier has been having a problem with the gas tank pressure valve, for over a year, causing the light to come on.

I've had a "on again off again" faulty engine light problem for years, whenever I'd take in for service, the damn engine light would go off, so I did the battery disconnect, it worked wonderful..

I tried this on a 2012 Mini and it did not work...I changed the plugs after a multiple misfire code...Car runs great now but it shows pending on the code reader and light never went out...I think on some cars you have to erase the codes in the computer memory

Good idea ,if you had fixed the problem but the light would still come ,on at least doing this just before your mot test means it will pass

I’ve just had my MOT today and got this light about 30 mins before it. Got in it after my MOT and it’s still there. Don’t think they’ve wiped it off the monitor, surely the inspection is part of the MOT?

I replaced the bad part with the negative cable disconnected. The light was off when I started the car. After a couple of restarts, the light came right back on.

I have a VW.The light has been on for 5years..I cleaned the cat converter using an fuel additive and cleaned the plugs..It goes off for a week or so.Runs fine tho till next cat clean

Be careful when buying any used car. Especially privately from someone you don't know. In California, it might not pass smog even after resetting the check engine light. Also by resetting the light does not fix the problem. It might be something serious.

For $40 you can buy a code scanner like Auto-XRay and read the codes, then reset the computer and fix your car that has the problem...also why did you feel the need to loosen the second battery terminal? Only need to take one off. Your Check engine is sure to come back on again until you fix the problem and in most cases the light will go off once the problem is fixed and there will be no need to reset the computer
