Hotline Miami is one of the best games I've played this decade. Even several years after my first playthrough, this scene has stuck with me. I've always interpreted it as a commentary on violence in video games and the psychology of gamers. As if the developers are asking the player "Why are you so happy to go on these massacres? Haven't you ever once questioned what's actually happening? If you were given absolute freedom to kill total strangers, like you are in this game, would you do it without even questioning what your motivation is?" And it was during this scene that I realised "They're right. I don't know who the bad guys are or why I'm attacking them. Some stranger just told me to kill them and I did it without a second thought. I really am the monster that this game thinks I am." Of course, nothing's been confirmed by the developers, so maybe they didn't intend for there to be a hidden meaning at all. But it really does make me think.

Jacket doesn't like hurting other people. He pukes when he kills that homeless guy after throwing the briefcase. He kills russians because he thinks they are responsible for Beard's death, he killed cops well cause he had to.

Jacket doesn't like killing people. You like killing people.
@marioachutegui23915 жыл бұрын
I mean, the ending for Jacket's history is fucking amazing because Jacket never enjoyed killing people, he killed because he thought that he was going to achieve something, like a compensation for his "girlfriend" death. But he gained nothing. He killed the mafia boss. Nothing changed. That's why I love the final scene. Jacket smoking his cigarette in the balcony, just admiring the landscape. He has just realised that killing that much was worthless, and he just wanted to stop there and try to asimilate that.

The way Jacket conveys his feelings through the personas, despite having no dialogue, resonates a lot. He was angry, he had nowhere to unleash his fury upon, and he mourns being unable to save his best friend's life. As a protagonist, he feels a lot more personal than any other playable characters, it feels more like he's the one driving the player and 50 Blessings giving both the go signal.
@engrenagegear94977 жыл бұрын
No, I think Jacket doesnt have full awareness of what he's doing. For me, he's stuck in a vicious circle of killing and massacre, if he liked killing he wouldnt have those hallucinations/schizophrenia symptoms (even if it's linked to his backstory)

Jacket likes hurting other people in the same way that we like sad stories, it's not pleasant but at the end it's a nice sense of catharsis and finality, in the same way, the cycle of violence Jacket indulges in gives him closure for Beards death, and at the end of the game, finally let's him mourn. at a steep cost of course

@danielgeronimo5538Ай бұрын
The answer is both yes and no. Yes because it is catharsis for things we wanna express, we feel anger, and we'd like to take it out on someone. No, because as much as we'd like to do all those things, we abide by several standards and we don't indiscriminately lash out if we can help it. There is no shame in admitting it, but the act of admitting it is an antidote to full corruption.
