The prototype 38? testing was being done in late '90s and early '00s. More like 23/25 years ago.

This video was shot several years before the “592XP” was available on a retail level. Also, it was late in the testing phases of the 592 platform.
I had wanted to just to “test run” this saw in an attempt to get an unbiased idea on how it actually performed. I had noticed the number designation on the cylinder and postulated on whether the stroke was the same as a 572xp.
I had talked about the weight a little. I have seen 16.8 quite a few times on the 5ooi saws. The 59? Is pretty consistent at 20 pounds even.
As mentioned, the .404 chain was new with the 1st sharpening session. The .375 chain was an old one that was set up to work on the previous log subjects that I had.
The “new & improved” Husky tach - Pulse PET 302R from Husqvarna did not read the Auto-Tune ignition system “correctly” as we see in this video. It would show an accurate number at idle occasionally. Most of the time it was x2 the actual rpm amount. I only witnessed a relative accurate readout at high idle a couple of times - in the last 2 years. I did talk at length with the, at the time, engineer about the inflated numbers. He was unaware. I also noted that the “new & improved” 302 tach did not hold the readout number once being taken away from the pulse source. The predecessor does hold the number for around 30 seconds - an EXTREMELY nice feature.
Looking at the timed runs -
Husky 59? With .404 @ 2880 idle & 12570 high idle went 14.80 down and 14.92 up.
Stihl 5ooi with .375 @ 2990/3000 idle & 13,160 high idle went 14.53 down and 14.60 up.
Husky 59? With .375 at 2810 idle and all over the place high idle numbers went 12.45 down, 12.92 up13.15 up, 13.16 up, and finally 13.55 up.
Jackson had mentioned that the 59? Turned 8240 and 8150 in the respective down and up runs with the .404 chain. With .375, the 5ooi was spinning ~ 7680 in the wood going down and 5582 coming up. Sporting .375 the 59? Registered 8235 going down and 7600 in the last of the four up runs.
I was impressed by the big Husky the 1st time socking it into a tree with a 3 foot bar. It runs really good for a stock saw. The 5ooi is also a good running stock saw. But, the fuel mileage of the 59? is far superior. The stock mounting system in the big Husky is better suited to running a long bar as well.
