Continuing our "No VEX Houdini" tutorials, Mo presents one of the first setups he built when he started using Houdini. He also rambles a bit about what Manu and Mo actually mean when they talk about using VFX tools for abstract design.
In this quick (sub 10 min) tutorial, Mo will build an abstract piece of polygons and set it up for basic rendering in Mantra. The download also contains a render setup for Octane and Redshift.

Brilliant, as always! Personally I've always found the abstract and "artsy" side of Houdini more interesting. The fact that one node can be used in so many different ways is just amazing!

Nice and simple and clean. This was really fun to watch as I'm finally getting to the point in Houdini where I can start to predict some of the nodes you are going to place next. Feels good! :)

Wow, you really make me discover all the neat little tricks Houdini has to offer :) That clean node is great and saves me the hassle of cleaning up Voronoi fracture "manually" with a prim wrangle :)

Brilliant, Thank you. I like the fact that we see more and more tuts where the second sentence is not: "now we drop a whatever-Wrangle node and add a bit of code". Getting to know all Houdini's nodes - it's vocabulary - is much more important for the artist than doing complex custom setups, at least until they can do their everyday stuff fluently. I learned more helpful things in 3 minutes than I often do in 30 minutes paid tutorials. Ctrl T to create a new tab - who'd have thought....

"I learned more helpful things in 3 minutes than I often do in 30 minutes paid tutorials" . Couldn't agree more. I also like the idea of increasing your vocabulary through Design lead training like the above and then mixing it up with Vex (which by the way is easy if you take baby steps and keep at it ). Cheers b

We've got a few beginner friendly series, amongst them "Houdini in five minutes" - or head over to SideFX's website, they ha r a great collection of learning material too. And the final trick is not to get frustrated too easily. It can be a handful when you're starting out... :) Cheers, Mo

E.g. using an attribnoise after the spraypaint-SOP. Set it to work on "P" and not "Cd" and dial in the amplitude and animation parameters to your liking. Cheers, Mo
