In current Blender 4.0/4.1: The "distance field" can be created using the "Geometry Proximity" node with the "N" object. Then use the "distance" output as an attribute for the plane object for borders/contours, just use the "Math" (cos, modulo, etc), "Color Ramp", and/or "Map Range" nodes to modify/remap the distance attribute.

This is fantastic. I've been playing with Confyui for a while and I was wondering if MLOPs could be a similar tool, but within the Houdini interface - which would be just perfect! The problem with Confyui, at least for me, is the amount of information you have to put in the node itself - since it doesn't have a "Parameter view" like Houdini - and things can get visually confusing like this. I can't wait to start playing with MLOPs, thank you so much for this Moritz! - Alvaro

Very cool and unexpected integration. Would love to see more ways like this that these tools can be implemented beyond wholesale image creation/slapping a coat of paint on an image.

AI is theft. Most AI images we see nowadays were generated by systems trained on copyrighted works without the artists' knowledge or consent. AI doesn't have to be used this way, but that is the way it is currently being used. AI has no place in the professional environment. Play around with it all you want at home, but don't bring any AI generated images to work. No matter how good you think the images look, it's unprofessional and takes money away from human artists whose published works are being stolen to train these AI models. All the major AI companies will fold to class action lawsuits soon, and the general public is already bored by AI generated images. I recommend going back to traditional techniques and making the art yourself. You seem to be good at it. Don't just type a prompt, make the artwork yourself!!

I recently learned about Entagma, and I can say without a doubt you guys produce some of the best Blender & Houdini tutorials out there. However, it's difficult to follow this and many others as several of the nodes in the tutorials have been deprecated in the latest Blender version. Trying to figure out how to reproduce the behavior of old legacy nodes using the new ones can be tricky for noobs like myself. I tried to enable legacy nodes, but it seems that is no longer possible in version 4.1.0.

Yeah, we know that is frustrating and we will keep updating the tutorials to keep up with the changes. But sometimes things change faster than we can produce good, quality content with! But we hear you! We appreciate you watching and thanks for the kind words! New Blender Content is coming :)

now you can obtain the distances with the "Geometry Proximity" node using the "N" object. Then put the "distance output" as an attribute for the plane Finally, just do the the math ("math", "color ramp", and/or "map range" nodes, etc) to modify/remap the distances and get the contour effect

Why is everyone so happy about this? I don't get it at all. Just do more of what you’re already doing, put it online, and charge for it!! Make your valuable education accessible to everyone. Find creative ways to charge more from people who can afford it. This is not a good news:)

That’s amazing thank you so much for this tutorial! I do have a few questions to ask tho! First of all, how do you get the growth to be so fast in the timeline? Mine doesn’t do half what yours does even when i set it as far as 3000 frames. Do you have a solution to make it develop quicker/ like yours? Maybe i missed a step? Second question, after doing all of this, when i try to add color with the color ramp it just doesn’t work and my line stays purely black. Stayed black and white in the geometry node editor when we tried to plug it to the viewer node at first, then stayed purely black after switching to the shader editor and adding back the color ramp there. Would you have an idea why this is happening? Thank you so much again!

Hi there, sorry for the late answer. A lot of the times where I let it run, the video is actually sped up. I could have made that a bit clearer, sorry. How well it runs is mainly dependent on your CPU but with this kind of system, as it gets more complex, there will always be a point where it won't run in real time. But to speed up testing simulation setups, you can switch your scenes framerate to something higher as the simulation zone is frame dependent. So setting your FPS to 60 or even 120 can save you a lot of waiting time as long as it runs faster than realtime. So if the curve is still in black and white, you might want to check the input of the viewer node and if its set to float or color. If its still set to float, hold ctrl and shift and click on the colorramp. As for the shaded view, do you have set up the Hair Emtpy System or have you used a Curve to Mesh node to make it visible? If it's still only a line it won't be able to render.
