Do you know the basic rules for CDL log books in the United States' - watch the video? DOT INSPECTION CHECKLIST: www.smartdrivetest.com/landin... SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► / smartdrivetest
Outlined are the rules for driving, work and rest time in the United States. This log book information will keep you in compliance with hours of service regulations in the United States.
In the United States, you are allowed to drive a maximum of 11 hours. The 11 hours of driving must occur within a 14 hour window. In other words, if you start driving at 8am, you cannot drive after 10pm at night.
As well, you must take a 30-minute break at or before the 8 hours of your work day. For example if you start working at 7am, you must take a 30 minute break at or before 3pm in the afternoon.
And between each work period, you must have 10 consecutive hours off-duty. For example, if you stop your work day at 6pm in the evening, you cannot drive again until 4am. And again, the off-duty time must be consecutive.
In the United States, the 2 work cycles are 60 hours in 7 days if the company for which you work does not operate 24/7. If the trucking company operates 24/7--in other words it never closes--you can work 70 hours in 8 days. The most common violations for CDL drivers is working more hours than allowed by the work cycle. Learn how to calculate your work cycle here: • How To Calculate Work ...
Log sheets must be handed into the company every 13 days, but most companies have drivers hand in log sheets at the end of every trip. And the driver's log book must be supported by other documents - bills of lading, fuel and lodging receipts, etc. See video: • Log Books | Supporting...
You must have the number of log sheets in the vehicle with you as per the cycle on which you are working. For example, if you're working on the 60 hours in 7 days, you must have 7 days in the vehicle. And for the other cycle 8 days in the vehicle. Supporting documents only have to be kept in the vehicle for the current trip.

hate to be the one to point this out but I think the image should have read 60hrs in 7 days and not 60hrs in 70days lol. but great info once again I like the fact that you don't water down what you are teaching. I've been on your website and I must say it has been very helpful.

Hi Kareem Kelsick - thanks for your comment, compliment, and pointing out the typo! LOL The unfortunate part is that KZfaq doesn't let the videos to be amended once these are up. You can, but it's a real pain in the butt!! I believe what I'm going to do is pin your comment to the top and put a note in the description - that should work. Thanks again, and if there's anything specific we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick

The only logbook violation I remember getting was back in the '90s, when I had a simple math error. Since it didn't put me over any limits, the DOT officer just had me correct it without a ticket. I tend to be a bit square, which hasn't endeared me with some dispatchers. :)

Hi Jak Conrad - Thank you for your comment. And we're happy to hear that you were polite to the DOT officer and he just had you correct the error. With my first logbook error, I wasn't so fortunate. But I never got one after that due to what I considered the learning experience. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

I drive for my company locally normal under a 100 mile radius but maybe once a week I might go over the 100 miles that's when I have to fill out a log book, so my question is when I fill out the log book for that trip over the 100 miles what do I for the rest of the week with the log book if I take that long trip on Monday, and I drive the rest of the week locally??

In Splitting sleeper berth, as per the rule continuous 8 hour SB not to be part of 14-hour window, So what is the case if there is a continuous SB of 8 hours 30 mins(continuous SB more than 8 but lesser than 10hours), are those additional 30mins also not part of the 14-hour window?

I just started my career as a truck driver, in a commercial construction company in texas, it is necessary to make the logbook if most of the time is local and also is not always a truck? one more thing, when I do the inspection before the trip that things are the ones that make the truck get out of service and when I should not move the truck? thanks
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 жыл бұрын
Hi elchinosurf - thanks for your comment and query. You don't have to fill out a logbook for the days your are running local. However, if you are running beyond 100miles every now and again, the DOT is going to want you to account for those other days. You'll either have to have time sheets, or those will have to be recorded in your logsheets. And yes, if you're running over scales every day, I would suggest that you keep the logbook in your vehicle. You only have to keep the pre-trip inspection sheet in the vehicle for the day that you're operating to show that you did an inspection in the last 24 hours. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

When don't you have to log in a commercial vehicle?
@ShayKMBR

Question: I work for a company that has me do quite exstensive amounts of driving. I have a company CAR , but do not have a cdl, even though I make deliveries. My question is this; does the company I work for have to abide by the laws and regulations of commercial drivers even though I do not have to have a cdl? Do I have to abide by these? If so, what should I do to bring this information up and/or become legal? Mondays I drive from midnight- Tuesday 2AM. Fridays-Saturdays are about the same. I do take breaks for gas etc but they expect all work to be done by given deadlines that, due to this, would not allow me the time to get a hotel and sleep for x amount of hours (if I did it would only prolong my trips, push my deadlines to the last minute limit, and get quite the ass-chewing). I call these days my 24 hour days (really more like 30, as much as 36, my record is 48). But, once I'm done, I get my other days off almost entirely. Any advice/suggestions? Is this legal?
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Shannon - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and query. No - if the vehicle you're driving is not registered as a commercial vehicle, than you don't have to comply with logbook rules my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. How many total miles can be drivin, if I stay with in 100 air miles radius and go off duty with in 12 hours. I normally Drive 316 miles every day and stay with in 100 miles radius. And it takes only total 10 hours from start to finish. Do I need eld?
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mohsin Bashir - Thank you for your comment. From my understanding, there isn't a limit on the number of miles that you drive, so long as you stay within that 100 mile radius and your company keeps time sheets. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

when loading or unloading do i go on-duty or can i just go straight to the sleeper?
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Askari Wali - thanks for your comment and query. When loading or unloading, you'll have log 15 minutes minimum on-duty, not driving for backing the truck into the dock. After that 15 minutes, then you can go to off-duty - either in the sleeper birth or off-duty. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

In all technicalities when is a log book requires to be filled out? I have a Ford f450 pick up truck and have heard from some that say you do not need a log and others say if it has a GVWR of greater than 10,000 lbs you are required to fill out logs

Hi Haidee N Hernandez - Thank you for your comment. You can simply put a line through the off-duty portion of the graph and then write the date range in whee you would put the date for the day - instead you would be putting in 1-5 Sept. 2017 for example. Hi Chris Rodriquez - Thank you for your comment and query. To determine the ETA, take the total distance and divide it my 47mph - that will give you the total number of hours required to complete the trip.
