Welcome to Tick Creek Ranch. This channel
was created to show the daily ins and outs of
life on a small ranch. We are a family of eight,
our lifestyle has taken us from the deserts of
Idaho to the wilds of Alaska and back to the
lower 48. We followed our dreams and finally
settled in the Ozark's of Missouri. We have
owned and operated our own businesses. over
the years, ranging from carpentry and
excavation to commercial and residential landscape. The children and ourselves have
developed a passion for learning new skills
which include leather work, welding and
fabricating, carpentry, plumbing, electrical,
roofing, painting, equipment operation, timber
sawing, blacksmithing, horseshoeing, flatwork
and concrete, timber framing, cattle ranching,
horse training, and many more. Please follow
along on this journey as we build our new
home and delve into the ways of regenerative
ranching. So stick around and watch us create
our dream using old world construction
techniques and style reminiscent of an era
gone by. Thank you and enjoy the journey.

Retired carpenter here that has always had an interest in timber framing but never had an opportunity to do any of it. And while I've seen that style of joint before it was on a much smaller scale. Looking forward to seeing the floor plan with some interior walls.

Wow! Yes and no. I’ve personally never built a house start to finish. I’ve framed some and remodeled some but never the whole process in one. My old man sure has though. Thanks Chris, we really appreciate the support

Hi Mate , happy birthday to 55 in a few days , i am not far away from that i am 52 at the end of the year , Perth is Beautiful , still quiet , the weather is great for 9 months of the year , the only change is the Price $$$$$ back in the old days it was cheap not anymore , eg- todays fuel price for 91 unleaded $2.21L yes that's for 1 litre , that would be $8.80 a gallon , like i said i could write an essay about the crazy but we all take the good with the bad @@NavyCopMA1

I've always wondered if there was a rhythm or reason to putting those corner rafters up. No one I know has done any since I was old enough to be interested for me to find out how. Thanx!

RE: "Fancy Dancy Pro Tip"... First, thank you for sharing! Will you please tell me why I would want to dip the ends of bolts into muriatic acid for 20 seconds? Side note, I've enjoyed watching every single video and I've gathered that "Pops" is quite the blessing, as is everyone on the crew. Generation after generation, the wealth of knowledge... I can't help but want to hear more from him since it appears, in part, your acquired knowledge and skills had 'sprouts' established and nurtured by him.
@tickcreekranch
@tickcreekranch Ай бұрын
Sure thing! The muriatic acid strips the zinc coating from the bolts allowing them to rust and age quickly. I’m not a fan of shiny fasteners on a “old world” building. Also, “Pops” my dad, is a wealth of knowledge concerning anything that’s conventional construction. Ie concrete, masonry, framing, electrical, plumbing, roofing, flooring, Sheetrock, cabinetry, finish etc… he doesn’t just have the head knowledge, he has the skills to do it all typically better than his subs. Maybe not faster but better. Whenever I had questions he had the answers. I was the black sheep in the family by not becoming a home builder. I went into framing, landscape, excavation, irrigation and later “alternative” construction. We now have very different but complimentary skill sets. We’ll make more content of the old man and have him share more knowledge.

Why did you dip.the heads of the lags in Muratic acid? They looked galvanized. I love these tips and tricks but i dont know this one. Its like a carpentry class and a very cool build all in one. Also, if you are able can you give some insight about building with green lumber, pros and cons kinda things and what to watch out for.
@tickcreekranch
@tickcreekranch 7 ай бұрын
Galvanized and zink finish is easily stripped with muriatic acid. We don’t want any modern looking fasteners. Hence we want them to rust. The end product of this build should feel like it came out of the 1800s. I’ve had several people ask that same question about the lumber. How about we’ll make a video detailing the ins and outs of green lumber construction? There is quite a lot to go over. I’ll get it out soon👍 Thanks Thad

@tickcreekranch9838 Well, that is what I was thinking, that you wanted the rusted look. Cool, I wasn't wrong, lol (I usually am though). It will look great. I think that would be a much appreciated video about green lumber. Thank you for helping us out, I know viewer suggestions add to your plate and you already have a lot to do so thank you, much appreciated. Until then, keep up the great work and I will wait patiently. 😊❤️

What has been the time frame from start to this point so far? Did I hear you right that it will take a lot longer because of the time to cut and mill the timber?
@tickcreekranch
@tickcreekranch 7 ай бұрын
It’s been well over a year since we dug footings. We’ve also taken many several month breaks from working on it. Our attention has been divided on other ranch projects. Yes, milling all your own lumber is very labor intensive. It has likely tripled the build time if not more. When all said and done I will work on some estimates of build time and labor for you folks. Thanks NC
