Yeah, house is totally right in this case. This guy would rather paint himself a martyr and let the world sort itself out, instead of continuing his work and helping people. I don't know if the writers intended it to be a moral conundrum, but if they did then they kind of failed.

The whole idea of refusing the tb meds was to make a scene and convince pharmaceutical companies to send their stockpiled tb meds to Africa, saving more people than he ever could in a hut with stone age medical equipment. Edit: That’s why he held a press conference in a scene after what was shown in this video.

@@vikramm.6743 the pharma company was already sending all the meds they wanted to. Maybe the media frenzy would have caused a large one time donation but now that Dr. Tb guy is dead they won't be sending any more. Or maybe that's me being incredibly cynical.

@@rikititi1848 That wasn't the point. The point was that, by refusing the meds, he became a media sensation; the doctor letting himself die to protest inequity in global healthcare. And it worked. He's not the first person to use the technique, and he won't be the last.

A running joke on the series was that Cameron would suggest that the patient was suffering from the autoimmune disease and House would reply, “It’s never lupus.” That tradition continued until a season four episode featured a patient who was correctly diagnosed with lupus 👍

Yeah, that was S4E8 - "You Don't Want to Know", and the patient was Flynn the magician played by Steve Valentine. He also played Harry Flynn in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, funnily enough.

You know, it's only occured to me since re-watching the show through these clips. The reason Cameron and this guy get on well is they both have complexes related to saving people. Cameron has a hero complex, while he has a martyr comples.

Hero complex is not about how other people view you, it's how you yourself are, it's about your constant need for saving people. Making people view you as something, anything is just being pompous selfish butt hole. I don't think any of the complexes is about how other people see u, it's all about how u see u.

2:43 shows House's mentorship at work. He isn't training them to be able to diagnose basic stuff, he is teaching them to be exceptional doctors by learning to look past the obvious and see what not everyone else can. He knew there was something else wrong with the patient; his exasperated "NOT EVERYTHING!" when he thought she was just writing it off as a routine case of a common disease was his frustration that his mentee was not analyzing the situation as he would. He calmed down after he realized that Cameron actually was looking at the big picture, even though she doubted there was anything there beyond it.

Interestingly, malaria was the number one cause of death in the USA in the 1800's. Although we never cured it, it disappeared almost completely with economic development, infrastructure, better housing, teraforming, and above all else, abolition of poverty. Disease in Africa is not its biggest problem, but merely a symptom of it.

This Patient was a hypocrite, he's not taking the tablets because Africans can't afford them. Yet he is willing to let himself be a patient in one of the finest hospitals. Pretty sure the hospital expenses are hundreds of times more expensive than the tablets. If he wasn't going to accept the medical care he was given he should've discharged himself from the hospital.

I was a patient in an ER. The room across from me had had a TB patient. Yellow tape, a sign saying that there was negative air pressure, and a two hour wait before the room could be used again. The custodian wiping down to get surfaces was in hazmat outfit. And here the character has TB and everyone waltzes in his atmosphere.

Of all the House clips I've seen, this has to be the first time ever that medical expenses, the absurd costs of all this, has been mentioned. I was starting to think this show took place in New Brunswick rather than New Jersey.

My mother spent 10 days in a New York hospital earlier this year. She had one CT scan but no other tests, just monitoring, scripts, and general care. The pre-discount, pre-insurance bill for the 10 days was just under $100,000. Fortunately Medicare covered essentially all of it.

@@notthatyouasked6656 Yeah, it's madness. 10 days in the hospital is going to be pricey though, even if they don't do very much in that time. From what I hear the common practice is for doctors and hospitals to charge way more than they actually expect to be paid, then the insurance company will say "no, we pay this lesser amount," which is still a pretty outrageous amount, but the difference the doctor and hospital can write off as a loss on their taxes. As for Medicare/Medicaid, I've heard some horror stories but a lot of people have found it to be really good, better than most private insurance (Kaiser...). Would be really nice to have it as an option, even if you have to pay something for it, without being unemployed or elderly.
