You gotta love this Jurassic Park-style house destruction! Seriously, though, when I watch skillfully operated heavy machinery like this, I'm always impressed. The term "Brick Wall" is typically a metaphor for something extremely solid. With a little flick of a lever inside the cab - CRUNCH- SMASH-TOPPLE -easy peasy. That shovel can just pass right through a house like it's not there. Quite impressive.

I don‘t get why they don‘t seem to care about separating stuff and remove the interior before crushing the house. Do they even recycle anything?
@JohnZWetmore
@JohnZWetmore 3 жыл бұрын
They grab any copper pipes that they see, and large pieces of steel, like girders in the basement ceiling. They might try to keep the masonry and concrete separate to be crushed and used as a subbase for paving. Pretty much everything else is shipped off to a landfill.

He would not get a job demolishing in Europe. The mess he created would be really difficult to recycle. When a machine operator demolish in Europe they sort the debree into containers. It is far easier to do it before hauling the containers away.

Except for some of the copper and iron, most of it was hauled off as mixed waste. I don't know what they did with it on the other end. On the other hand, for this other demolition, the operator tried to keep the masonry separate from the other rubble and they were sent to separate places. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ir9oa92gkqfKn40.html

Why was the house demolished? Looks like it might have been in fairly good condition. Looks like it was built in the mid 20s or so? Federal styling, 2.5 stories, and probably a basement as well. All brick and a slate roof! They don’t make them like that anymore. I know the relative area, are they widening the roads?
@JohnZWetmore
@JohnZWetmore 4 жыл бұрын
Several houses on the block were being demolished to make room for an apartment building. It's two blocks from the subway station. This was one of the newer houses. I believe it was built around 1937. Most of the demolition rubble ended up in the basement until they trucked it off the next week. Arlington Road was widened to 4 lanes several decades ago. As a result, this house had a very shallow front yard. Most of the road widening in this part of the county took place in the 1950s and 1960s.

All waste and no attempt at salvage. A disgusting waste of earth resources. Last time I witnessed a demolition in the UK they stripped all the slate off the roof, all doors and windows were removed, and sold off site where practical, joists and floorboards stripped out and where not rotted saved for re-use, wiring and piping salvaged and then and only then did the big machinery move in.....

@John Z Wetmore that what I thought. My friend, who lives in Chevy Chase, were going to a Yoga class on Bethesda Row Tuesday and noticed the now demolished houses. I looked online and found some of those properties sold for up to $4 million - that’s insane!!!! I’m going to Sala Thai on Monday. I really hope those houses across the street are demolished. They’re an eyesore
