Paddy did more than a great job, and this is truly his episode. I think some people are overplaying the impact of Aemond. Sure the actor did a decent job, but what sells him is his ‘look’ more than anything else. But fanboys will be their typical fanboy (I.e. idiot) selves, ugh.

Years before HOT D was aired, I would read how popular Daemon was among book readers. Came from both genders. A lot of females read this stuff and aren't into Twilight and Harry Potter or at least not anymore for some. I'd read how Daemon was such a BADASS Targaryen and how they couldn't wait to see him in TV form. Matt Smith crushed this role the moment we first see him in Ep 1. Daemon pulls the most gravity in EVERY scene. It's like even if he's leaning in the background, you want to know what he's doing? What's he thinking? How he's reacting? If he doesn't appear for 30 minutes into the episode, you start to ask, Where's Daemon? Where's Daemon? This is pure charisma, people. Listen, I thought Ewan Mitchell would steal scenes in this episode but I didn't see it at all. Aemond looks cool but it's not the level of charisma that Daemon carries. Matt Smith still pulls the most eyes and ears to him. We all hang onto his every word and Daemon is a man of very few words. But when he says something, it can hit you as hard and as fast as Dark Sister did through Vaemond's neck. Daemon is THE ONE. This is why in every comment section, guys and gals will say, I love Daemon! I love Matt Smith! I will defend all of Daemon's crimes! It's insanity. But he's a character who hasn't let me down. Without Daemon, I'm not sure I would continue to watch this show. GRRM and the book readers were right all along. We are starting to get it. Daemon truly is the main reason to watch. The GOAT. "He can keep his tongue." Can see the tongue attached to the neck while Daemon wipes off Dark Sister and then directly looks at Aemond. You can even see Aemond flinch the moment Daemon played Fruit Ninja with Vaemond's head. I know not everyone likes Daemon and that's fine. People want to be contrarian or like the boy scouts. And Daemon is written as a grey character so he's going to be divisive. But even the haters have to admit Daemon still pulls the most attention over any other character in this show. He has "IT". He has je ne sais quo.

I mean, by that logic, the next generation is always less "Velaryon" than the previous one - unless you marry siblings, which afaik only Targaryens are allowed to do in Westeros. Like, Laena's daughter is as much a Velaryon as any son Laenor would have had. And Laenor's trueborn son could have married someone outside the family. And we don't know who Vaemond's wife is (in the books, at least), so who knows how "Velaryon" his children are - or his and Corlys' parents, for that matter.

The problem isn't just about the Bloodline, but the heritage. The heir will still be Luce, and luce is not a Velaryon and not an heir, and his a bastard. So there are 3 things wrong with that. Note that it would also exist a problem, if Raena was made the heir and she was going to marry Luce. Because Luce is a bastard! Raenys only accepted the proposal, because of her Husband. Because she was on the side of his Brother. That is why they showed the scene with her respecting his body and grieving for him.

Because that's not really depended on your blood, but on your upbringing - if Laenor spent time teaching his kids about Velaryon traditions and whatnot, then he has Velaryon heritage, does he not? And his and Rhaena's children would have Velaryon "blood" through their mother and would know about Velaryon culture through both of their parents.

If getting the "blood" any way possible, in this case through their mother, was the solution, then you wouldn't have the 1st son be the head of the family.
