Hats off to Paddy Considine. A fantastic performance! This was the most powerful episode so far for me. Rhaenyra crying on her fathers bed was heartbreaking. Viserys coming in the next morning to rule was powerful, like Aragorn coming into the throne room in Helms Deep. Then Daemon coming to his brothers side to help him really showed where Daemons heart truly is. He loved his brother. This is excellent tv.

It was fricking intense as well. I feared he wouldn't make it. That he would lose consciousness, or perhaps fall while climbing: then the Hand Otto Hightower and the green queen could've later claimed at the council that the King was feeble at that point, and no longer in his right mind, and thus King's ruling might've lost meaning. Instead the old man powers through: He was "tested" at the final day of his rule, like he had spoken years ago to Hand Lyonel Strong. Only for hid delirious words to be misinterpreted by his wife, who then brought it all crashing down.

There's a fascinating dynamic that Viserys' extreme physical deterioration was what nearly convinced the two factions to reconcile. He was at his most politically powerful when he was most physically weak. There was a certain gravitas added to even the most basic of moments (like the king arriving to preside of over court or talking to his family over dinner) because it was clear just how much willpower he was expending to do such things.

The reveal that Viserys and Aemond both have one eye gave me(likely Aemond too) a glimmer of hope. Hope that Viserys would finally say something, anything, about Aemond's loss. I think it was a great touch that Viserys did not. Aemond's unaddressed maiming hung like a cloud. Lucerys looking at Aemond and giggling like he got away with something must have been infuriating to Aemond. He kept it in well, not even hitting back. Aemond took the punch from Jace like a champ and shoved Jace down like a kid. Aemond could have been a great man. It's such a same that he is unable to rise above.

I think anyone who has seen a loved one deteriorate and change drastically with age and illness will really appreciate the mix of horror and immense strength that Viserys shows in this episode. Especially during the throne room sequence where a shade of his former majesty returns during the hour when it is most needed. Calling back to that moment in episode 5, I believe this was his crucible and his challenge that proved he was a strong and noble individual. He may not have been an excellent king but he was undoubtably a good man.

@@apollorushing3611 that's not really a fair criticism. Every character in this world uses prophecy to confirm what they want to believe. Viserys was so convinced he was destined to have a son that it cost him Aemma. Melissandre is convinced Stannis is Azor Ahai despite all evidence to the contrary. Dany is willing to buy into the prince who was promised prophecy once Missendei points out it could be a princess. Dany also adopts the stallion who will mount the world prophecy because it aligns with her desire to reclaim the Targaryen throne.

I cried this entire episode. When Rhaenyra was begging her father, it broke my heart. Then when Viserys left his bed - the whole time - I boohooed. The way they announce Viserys - "Viserys Targaryen, 1st of his name, King of the Andals and the first men, defender of the realm." Tears. When Daemon put the crown of Viserys' head. Snot. This episode was befitting Paddy and his performance. 1. Baela said "My grandmother looks comfortable there." Vaemond didn't want just any Valeryon on the throne, it has to be him. Can't be Baela, Raenys or Raeyna, it has to be him. 2. Aegon is an alcoholic and doesn't want to be king. He's traumatized. He's just a tool. 3. Rhaenyra is a good mom. 4. Notice all the Guards outside are High Towers. 5. Aemond is a Shein Daemon. In my high school, Vaemond could never have survived. You can't take a joke from childhood? 6. Helena said; "Beware of the beasts beneath the boards." Remember that for later. 7. Alicent just wanted to hear what she wanted to hear.

If HBO is backing Paddy Considine for awards, they should definitely submit this episode. My god, this man can act! The whole sequence of Viserys struggling to walk and climb the Iron Throne, with Daemon being the one who helps him and gives him the crown. And it was a nice little reference to everything Daemon did to put Viserys on the throne. Everyone was great in this episode tbh, but I feel like the one stealing the show was Daemon and Aemond's rivalry! Can enemies have such sizzling chemistry? I swear Aemond will be using the scene of Daemon decapitating Vaemond to pleasure himself. Remember when people were hyping up the Clegane Bawl for years? Well this is much better I think. However, I didn't like the ending. I feel like it steals her agency as a character. First, it was like "see, Alicent is a good wife, she respects Viserys so much that she's willing to accept Rhaenyra" but then it was like "see, Alicent is not ambitious, she's just following her husband's last wish ". Also, how could anyone believe that THAT Aegon will unite the realm and protect them? The guy can barely hold himself back from antagonising his teenage nephews... I wished they had made him a little less of an asshole because Jacaerys appears to be the most perfect gentleman in comparison. Btw, the ladies playing Baela and Rhaena are so pretty! Even the unfortunate wigs cannot distract from their beauty!

Unless ur a heavy alicent supporter, or some criston cole emo fanboy the blacks are cooler, minus the weird incest stuff but thats how we were told targaryens were from the get go, so i mean to have an issue with that now after the entire game of thrones went down with jamie and cersei, but now you choose to make a stand on it is weird to me. But imo the blacks are cooler because of daemon and darksister, there dragons, ceraxes looks cool. And green really has no place being ina Targaryen sigil or logo, or banner.

My favorite moment was when Jace and Helena danced. This was the union Rhaenyra proposed, and Viserys favored (in the books, it's never mentioned, but it's something Rhaenyra must have thought of), and it would have done so much to bring peace. It would put Alicent's grandson/daughter on the throne. And looking at the way the two interacted, I think Jace and Helena would have made for a happy couple.

Quite amazing how HotD has been delivering at such a high level so far, with pretty much every episode better than the previous. The appeal to both hardcore book fans with the delving into and expanding the lore down to quite small and intricate detail and all the way to the casual fans is quite impressive. HotD is hitting the cinematic essentials to appeal to just about anyone. Including top notch writing , directing , cinematography , sets , costuming , creative choices , dynamic compelling characters , excellent casting and so many incredible acting performances. All of which will go a long way maintaining that appeal. Other series especially also airing right now are def not hitting those essential film / TV making criteria , let alone that level of depth, complexity that HotD delivers each week / episode. Special praise to Considine from me , he has stood out performance wise as Viserys I the entire S1 thus far imo. I expect many awards to be going his way and E8 is arguably his strongest yet. The general subtleties and intricacies we get from the performance and the overall portrayal decisions from the actor himself and the HotD team have really enhanced S1. For me the best parts of E8 were with Viserys. In just that episode showing the extremely deteriorated health , his general interactions and then refusing the milk of the poppy to rule / govern one more time and have a final proper meal and interaction with his whole family. Including the tragic final albeit futile outreach to both factions , that final gasp of advice to forge peace to both halves of the family. Considine’s performance has been incredible and in E8 was quite moving , emotive and memorable. So many great performances overall on HotD , not one weak link imo. From all the actors who played RT & AH , Smith , Ifans , Eve Best , the adult Aemond actor really looks to be very good as well etc. The whole cast seems great but Considine to me is the standout of S1 , his performance each week has been so impactful & will be missed.

I've actually been finding HoTD to be better than GoT. It's more mature, the quality of acting and writing seem higher...it's more Shakespearean than Game of Thrones ever managed. We'll see if they can maintain it, but they've made a strong start.

house of the dragon is moving at a much different pace, some game of thrones episodes were kind of boring, and led to small plot things. Every episode in this is like, a summary of a chapter or something the episodes as a whole are hitting way different than alot of game of thrones were, and these characters are also much more complex. Yeah that last episode was literally levels over anything game of thrones had put out emotional wise, like miles better. People i knew who barely saw game of thrones and didnt care for it saw this episode and were floored by it. But you also have to remember Daemon is george rr martins favorite character in the whole ice and fire universe i beleive, so he definitly wasnt going to represent this era in a bad way. Tbh i think a jon snow sequel would be boring. Game of thrones was good but jon snow was a very simple character, especially toward the end. Alot of characters toward the 4/5th season of that show starting going to complete garbage. I dont think this show will go down that road i think he learned from those mistakes.

*forgive the long response in advance* @@dmgroberts5471 same and i took some heat saying that lately in these forums / chats. But personally i do feel the same , to me its better on pretty much any level than most of even early GoT. For one GoT was always good and interesting (until it was not in later seasons) but really took until its 3rd or 4th season to fully hit its stride then sadly fell off from S5 on for the most part. Other than S6 which had some good moments / episodes. HotD has a much higher starting level , as it should 10 plus years after GoT S1 and the general standards and expectations come with that and with the climate of film / series making and fandoms at this point. Ntm seemingly HotD looks to have smartly observed and learned from many of GoT's mistakes. The writing is better on HotD imo and especially in S1 or S2 GoT we don't have so many of those several minute throw away brothel scenes and the like we got quite often in early GoT. Hardly any of that on HotD , much more streamlined. The writing does set HotD apart , GoT had some very good performances / acting but once D&D surpassed most of the source material / went their own way , including S5 and after that. The writing declined which hindered a lot of the GoT performances going forward. But i would say not one performance came near Considine / Viserys level on GoT , some very good ones but nothing quite that level of moving and emotive we see from Considine. I think it also shows that Condal in particular and his team are true students and fans of the ASoIaF universe ; which D&D clearly were not. The delving into and expanding the lore so often into small detail. Even down to touching on theories like the Lemon tree with the whole Braavosi plant thriving in KL. Elements like that but also of course Aegon's prophecy , Valyria , Tyroshi generals , curse of Harrenhal , hints around Corlys / his voyages and well beyond. To me HotD just feels even more ASoIaF universe-like than GoT , especially with using similar devices to the text like ambiguity (similar to how GRRM uses it) and proper complex symbolism. I also find it that much more impressive how well HotD is doing on any cinematic essential level while also including so many ASoIaF / GRRM elements. Because imo adapting F&B is in imo tougher than ASoIaF. ASoIaF is much bigger and complex overall. But F&B / the novellas / the DotD in general has a relatively small amount of source material. And that limited material has a fair bit of ambiguity , almost no dialogue, and one has to navigate often multiple conflicting accounts of events. ASoIaF is larger , more complex and ambitious but early on especially had so much source material (1000s of pages) , and direct events / scenes and dialogue to borrow from. Which is often what they did in early GoT. Neither project is easy at all but F&B has quite a bit of challenges to navigate and overcome , let alone delivering to the level cinematically , while also staying so true to the source material / feel of the universe that we are seeing on HotD. The job HotD is doing for me impresses me much more at this point. And shows that even with slight / tweaks changes that all adaptations have to make , things can be slightly altered but still remain true to the text and the general spirit of it.
@dmgroberts5471
@dmgroberts5471 Жыл бұрын
@@AndrewK23777 Well, it's even more impressive now that I know how little text there is about each event. Episode 8 was taken from, what? 2 or 3 paragraphs? Less than one page, and they crafted this from it. Amazing. It really goes to show the calibre of TV show that's possible these days, and the demand for such. Another thing I've noted is that the language is more medieval, using things like "mine own," and addressing people as "good Brother."
@AndrewK23777

@@dmgroberts5471 agree on the possibilities and what can be achieved cinematically even with series nowadays. But the proviso there hinges on having the right and properly qualified people in the creative and production positions. Those cinematic essentials have to met - good writing , directing , casting , acting , sensical choices , cohesion , sets , costuming etc. We see with even other massive projects (also airing right now) those basics / essentials if shirked can be quite disastrous. With GoT , D&D wrote most of it i believe except for a few hacks and yes-people they let into their circle. HotD has a team of writers i believe , many of whom have quite good CVs and the difference is clear. Also HotD seems to also have good directors not micro-managed from unqualified people above them. Perhaps above all the clear familiarity , knowledge and passion for the universe shows through with Condal and his end product. D&D to me likely feigned enough interest to get the job but they were hardly ASoIaF experts or even avid fans and that very much showed in the later seasons. Condal seems a genuine fan and student of this universe which also shows in HotD with the difference in the level , complexity , feel and immersion. HotD really captures the spirit & feel of this universe so well. Likely how often Condal seems to include and collaborate with GRRM helps tremendously with the authenticity. Which was very lacking for example when D&D / GoT alienated GRRM from S5-S8.

FIrstly - I cried, the entire time. And I even cry when I see the clip of Viserys and Daemon interacting. All Daemon ever wanted to do, was help his brother RULE. and his banishment opened Viserys up. I think Ottis is behind the trouble in the Stepstones. He wants to crush Corylis and replace him with a more likeable Lord of the Tides. Go back to episode when Rhaenyra picks her guard. Otto, kept advocating NAVAL people. He convince Viserys to let his brother die in battle! Daemon could see it all and he was the last person Otto wanted around. Because he was able to see Otto clearly and was just cruel enough, to order the death of anyone that opposed Dragon Leadership. Second - I found myself sympathizing with Alicent and Aegon, this episode. Aegon does not want this. He is an abused, neglected child, with addiction problems. He has no relationship with his King Father, or Prince Uncle. Just Otto and Cole. No one is guiding him. Much like Rhaenyra had no guidance. No one has prepared them to ascend. Aegon - is so lost and has no idea from right and wrong. Yet, they are choosing him as KING??? Alicent is so disgusted by her children. Children she has no idea how to love, because she was 14 when she was tasked to have them out of DUTY. Not a burning desire to have love babies. She has never experienced one day of pleasure and joy. Passionate sex, freedom... all she knows is DUTY. I wish someone, would show her LOVE. She is behind glass, everyday of her entire life. Third - The real LOVE STORY. Is the story of all the brothers. The way the Patriarchy DESTROYS. All these second sons - lost and aimless. This system that says unless you are a first born male - you are nothing. Forcing brother against brother. But Daemon does LOVE Visarys. The kingdom and the King began dying after that bond was broken.

I had watery eyes during most of Viserys scenes this episode. Especially when Daemon assisted him. Despite the time jumps, this show still gave us excellent characters in less than 10 episodes. Something the old show failed miserably at during the final 2 seasons. Daemon clearly loves his brother and vice versa for Viserys. Whether we look at portrayal or writing, Viserys is the best ruler we have gotten on screen and the best "father of the realm" in the thronesverse thus far. I'm a strong Rob Stark fan but as a leader of affairs and running a country while trying to keep a selfish family together... he is by far better than Rob. Even the line about "we won that war years ago" in regards to the stepstones had me both sad and happy at the same time. Remembering that earlier in the season he was literally fed up with that place. Back then he was like "that place again?!" Paddy should get all praises for his performance. That final walk to the iron throne is goated. Thats in the hall of fame of the thrones universe.

Rhaenys's change of mind in the throne room after Viserys's arival seemed to me the result of realisation, how everybody is already feasting on his not yet dead body, including her. She chose doing the right thing: respect the will of her husband, that is also not dead yet, and may still live (!), and the will of the king, regardless of blood and real parentage. She chose a peace of mind in this regard.

I actually cried when Viserys was struggling to get to the throne and then Daemon helping him and putting the crown on his head. Paddy Considine's performance was that great!! Daemon was also clearly moved when he saw how ill his brother was and it was touching to see this. Also, I think that Vaemond getting half his face chopped off for telling the truth about the Strong boys in front of everyone is a foreshadowing of Ned Stark getting decapitated for letting Cersei know that he knew that Joffrey was not Robert Baratheon's son but Jaime's. Telling the truth in Westeros will get people killed.

Paddy Considine nailed it with that entrance. A man barely alive, clinging to what little strength he has left, almost unable to even breath, crouched so low that everyone stood above him. Read an interview with Paddy C. where he talked about improvising Viserys's final words..."my love". He wants to believe Queen Aemma appeared for Viserys at his end, come to fetch him to the afterlife. 💔 Paddy gave other cool insights into Viserys: said he's basically been dead since he lost Aemma, it just took his body a long time to catch up. Notice Viserys never demands the Maesters heal him, is never much concerned about the progression of his illness or treating it aggressively. PC confirms that Viserys truly saw Rhaenyra as his "only child", his kids with Alicent are merely afterthoughts to him. Really sad. Paddy also said that Viserys's physical decay mirrors the corruption and enmity around him. Considine deserves all the awards for his incredible portrayal.

I think it's important that Viserys spent this whole episode (as he usually does) urging people to stop doing whatever it is they're doing. He always seems to be arguing for inaction. But here we see that even though a typical targaryen is impulsive and violent, Viserys's path often takes at least as much strength. The two faces I think we're supposed to remember from this episode are those of Viserys and Aemond. Both get a lot of close-up shots of their faces. Both are missing an eye. Viserys is the one who heals the rift and Aemond is the one who rips it open again. Aemond is exactly what Viserys wished he could be just a couple episodes ago: decisive, warlike, strong... not to mention beautiful... someone the singers could sing songs about. But we see in this episode that Aemond is little short of a monster especially compared to this swan-song from Viserys.

Alicent knows what he means, but that doesn't mean she won't use her "misunderstanding" as a selfish pretext. Thinking he's talking to Rhaenyra, he tells her in no uncertain terms, "Those things I did today, I did to reaffirm that thing we were talking about earlier." If someone alludes to a conversation you weren't a party to and have no idea what the subject is, you're fooling yourself if you honestly believe they meant to say it to you. And Alicent is no fool. But she'll certainly disingenuously act like she believes she heard what she wanted to hear.

@@kevinc809 Yeah, very much the opposite of what he was trying to say. That's certainly what Alicent intends to pretend he was saying, But for that to be true, you have to ignore every thing he's said and done throughout the series up to this point.

I loved the looks back and forth between daemon and aemond. Aemond feels like a reflection of all the worst parts of Daemon. And he looks up to Daemon or i at least read that out of his looks. Maybe Aemond under the tutelage of Daemon could have been a better person and maybe even change Daemon for the better.

I think Daemon is the only person that Aemond fears. They surely look alike, but Daemon has charisma. Aemond seems angry and tense non stop.

It's absolutely insane what Paddy Considine pulls off here. This is not just talent, he should land all actor awards that exist for TV for this, by a landslide. The whole season brought to unprecedented levels of drama and majestic tragedy just from this one man's acting. Damn we will all miss him!

Last night's episode made me wish Bran would travel back in time and make Viserys a wheelchair. Paddy Considine's performance was the best I've ever seen!! I was crying at his pain and smiling at his family momentarily getting along for him. The episode was flawless....well except for the Velaryon wigs.

Episode 8 was terrific, all around. The look on Viserys' face as he surveys the room -- he knows this will be the last time these people will be in a room together, "peaceful" like this. He knows his feeble body and harried breath is the only thing keeping them from tearing each other apart. In fact, as soon as he is carried out of the room, violence erupts immediately. I feel so bad for him. What a performance by Paddy Considine. And I think we were all theorizing that Alicent might misinterpret Viserys' last words, and it seems that's exactly what happens. She cannot in good conscience thinks this is the one (1) time Viserys is lucid enough to make proclamations on who should sit the throne... but she will use it as justification to install her son on it nevertheless. The final two episodes cannot come any sooner!

Viserys proclamation is illegal and criminal. The entire plot to pass the Strong bastarrds off as Laenor's sons constitute a criminal conspiracy. This is a situation Viserys created himself by being so selfish and pigheaded in his decision making. Alicent has never in all those years cared that he supported Rhaenyra's criminality. I think from her perspective Rhaenyra is just a criminal and it's her duty to stop what she's doing. Alicent is taking on the Ned Stark role and Rhaenyra the Cersei role, albeit with different levels of intellect and power dynamics.

@@crescendyr8438 the king is the ultimate authority nothing the king does is "illegal" (nevermind that this is not a society with codified laws anyway). Also, the ruling Velaryons are happy and willing to go along with it. Alicent is nowhere like Ned. She might act and cloak herself in righteousness and religion, and she has a point that sexist common law is on Aegon's side, but she will act for interest, not honor

@@AllTheArtsy If the King can do nothing illegal he wouldn't need to hide behind lies. He could just say Luc and Jace's father is Harwin Strong, but Jace is still heir to the throne. He doesn't because he knows there are limits. He may not be accountable to the law in life, but after he dies those illegal decrees can be challenged. Like an executive order irl. Doesn't matter if Corlys is happy to participate in a criminal conspiracy. Again, you keep talking like everything is out in the open. But they are lying because they know it's wrong and that it will not fly. Similarly, it doesn't matter if parents agree to their 12yo child getting married. It's illegal. She is very much like Ned in that she is a person of traditional values who can't stand by a watch criminals flout the law. The only difference is you like "sexist common law" supporting Ned and you dislike "sexist common law" supporting Alicent. Ned's honor resulted in the War of the 5 Kings. Alicent's honor results in the Dance of Dragons.
