Showrunner Miguel Sapochnik, director Greg Yaitanes, Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen), and more explore the emotional complexity Rhaenyra endures after hearing the Greens usurped the throne, Rhaenys’ change of heart, and the implications of Aemond and Luke’s encounter.

Lots of circling back to episode 1 in the season finale, but the one really hammered home was what Viserys said to Rhaenyra: "The idea that we control dragons is an illusion." Lucerys's dragon reacted in fear by spewing fire at Vhagar, and then Aemond couldn't stop his dragon from killing both young dragon and nephew. His game turned into a disaster because neither dragon acted as its rider expected it to.

It was a delight to see how they handled the whole "as told by maesters" thing of the Fire and Blood book. For everyone present at the hall of Borros Baratheon, it would seem like Aemond chased Lucerys down with Vhagar and murdered him in cold blood, so seeing how the Dance began because both riders were inexperienced and unable to control their dragons was a fantastic detail.

@Daniel Laygo Rhaenyra and Syrax have grown up together since Syrax was a hatchling. Vhagar is literally an over hundred years old war machine with a 19 year old teenager on her back needling commands into her brain. Dragons can hear commands, doesn’t mean they’ll listen. This is prolly why it’s much preferred to put a dragon egg in a cradle with Targaryen from birth and have them bond basically like siblings once the egg hatches. On the flipside, you have Arrax who was the same age as 14 year old Lucerys. Basically a toddler dragon, forced into a situation where it panicked like any child and wouldn’t listen to Lucerys out of fear.

What a brilliant way to end this season. I like how they made Luke's death accidental. It not only gives Aemond's character much-needed nuance, but also adds an element of tragic irony to the narrative. The Targaryens believed that their power resided in dragons. But it was eventually their dragons that triggered their downfall. Their object of hubris also became their object of doom.

The most heartbreaking scene in the end was to watch Rhaenyra hold her womb and cry out loudly without making any noise. I mean that scene clearly shows she was torn apart completely she still didn't overcome from the death of her justborn and now she loses her second child. Her grief is beyond our imagination and the look she gives at the end clearly shows that she has no mercy left for the greens now. Though Aemond didn't want Lucerys to death but still his full chase for the little boy truly makes him responsible for his death and begining of the war. Peace and harmony didn't fetch any goodwill for Rhaenyra and ya now we gotta see the darkside of hers. I standstill and support my Queen.

I loved the changed they did with Aemond. It proves that stories need context to be better understood. In the hundreds of years that passed since the dance of the dragons everyone in westeros might have assumed he went and killed his nephew. But it was always confusing to me why would he kill his nephew after so many years that he lost his eye. It was never implied both in text and in the show that he was murderous or sadistic like Joffrey or Ramsey were. So the change makes much more sense in my opinion

On the other hand Vhagar is almost 180 years old. Vhagar was very huge so little Arrax was scared when Vhagar chased him. Arrax threw fire on Vhagar out of fear as he was defending himself. Well even without the scene, they will still need Emma or other actress than Milly. Milly looking like a teenager girl too much, it will be funny as shit seeing Milly playing as a mother of teenage boys when she looks like a teenager herself lol

I don’t get the need to be disrespectful towards milly when they both played a different version. Milly introduced rheanyra as a no-nonesense princess. Adult rheanyra is kind of miserable afterall she went through emma has that face so she fits.

This episode was so powerfully made from the perspective of Rhaenyra as a woman, that touches on how motherhood, giving birth, managing her spouse, worry for her children, loss of children -- are all intertwined with the responsibility of the crown-- was so impeccably nuanced and well done. It was a near perfect episode

I enjoyed how they played out the tension between Daemon and Rhaenyra. Daemon, ever the realist, knew exactly what was being plotted out and the dangerous power the Greens now posed when Rhaenys told them the Greens were coming for them *and* thier children. When Rhaenyra spoke of the song of ice and fire after contemplating the offer Otto brought to her, he knew her naivite and hesitence was dangerous and could get them all killed, whether she wanted to go to war or not - it was a rage of disgust and disbelief. I hope the showrunners let Daemon support and develop Rhaenyra's transformation into the Black Queen, instead of having him be aloof and distant for the rest of season 2; they spent all of season 1 developing their bond and chemistry, would be a shame to not lean into that more. Would love to see the two of them go pure vengance and wrath together. Emma and Matt absolutely eat the screen, incredible casting.

"what I think is really affecting about it within a series--you know, there's a lot of loss, there's a lot of death, there is lots of pain of different sorts, and yet somehow I think this moves the goalposts for suffering. once you've lost both your parents, and you've lost a lover, maybe you think you know grief. and I think what's so awful is that losing Luke tells her she knows nothing about grief, and completely changes her outlook on the world going forward." great analysis from Emma D'Arcy. so much more grief to come...

I love how they handled that scene between Aemond and Luke. There's no exact recollection on the source as to how it actually happened so how they handled it here was perfect! Aemond and Luke had this feud building up since that scene where they gave Aemond a pig and now they finally come head to head. But what I love is, as much as they want to hurt each other (Aemond more than Luke), they made it as if both men knew there was still a line they shouldn't cross but unfortunately their dragons went berserk.

Rhaenyra and Rhaenys’ relationship is very interesting. I believe they once hated each other. There is pride and envy in between. However, they are slowly realising that they are both the same in their fate trying to represent a female leader and losing love ones doing it. Rhaenys is becoming the mother Rhaenyra needs during these moments. I’m excited how it turns out.
@bpf10

I like Rhaenys just observed how Rhaenyra handled the situation without fully declaring and probably came to the conclusion that she was telling the truth back in Episode 8 - "I had no part in your sons death" She weighed the actions of Alicent and Rhaenyra after the Kings Death and judged Nyra to be more Just, and thats why she convinced Corlys, when she could have chosen to remain Neutral

the moment Daemon shouted on Rhaenyra, you can see the way Rhaenys looked at her. the same look on episode 8 when she saw Viserys coming to the hall. at that moment, she decides where she'll put her allegiance. she believes in Viserys and now she felt Rhaenyra is just like her father. it gives her comforts while it frustrates Daemon once more.

@@greenforce68 its great attention to detail and really well done, she has such a unique POV of how the events play out in Eps 8, 9 & 10 and you see her slowly lean from neutral more towards Rhaenyra's cause I really like nuanced storytelling like that
