He had conflicts in himself and every judgement. That made him more real as a person. As in the first episode, he loved his wife but he need his son enough to do that. I still think he was too weak for being king, he had got the throne because there was only one woman to candidate with, and that’s why the story begin. It was ironic that he finally had a son he always want but still remained his dauther as an heir because of feeling guilty about her mother.

I feel Rhnaerya's frustration. After naming her heir, Daddy has effectively pushed her aside rather than supporting her in council meetings. He dismissed her and now wonders why she's hostile? If Alicente had told her privately of Otto'a machinations I think the friendship between the girls would have survived the King's marriage.. Pity Alicente didn't have more of a backbone. @@rozz1864 True, women at that time had not much choice, but Alicent chose to not tell Rhaenyra what was going on that she was slowly working her way into the King's heart the last 6 months after Rhaenyra's mother passing. From the first episode, Alicent was showed to be attuned with the working of the court and cares about positions. She chided Rhaenyra (who pretended) when Rhaenyra acted as if it didn't bother her. Alicent was also aware the implication when her father insisted that she made her self look more mature (she was 14, after all LOL) by wearing her mother's dress while comforting the King. She knows where the whole persuasion can go if she succeeds in working Viserys, it'll be against Rhaenyra. This is why Rhaenyra felt very bertrayed by Alicent...Alicent was the person she thought was fully on her corner (her supporter), but it turned out she was politicking alongside her family all along... Not saying that Alicent was not conflicted about doing that to her friend but we all know she chose to do it to elevate her standing and her family's standing.

I wish they talked more about the stark difference between rhaenyra and Viserys during the hunt. The king goes off and struggles to kill a captured stag, and then you have rhaenyra walk in after leaving in anger, covered in blood with a dead boar in tow. I love the show-don’t-tell style that the show is going for like with Viserys’ missing fingers in this episode due to the rot mentioned in previous episodes. A good metaphor for slowly breaking down due to the stress of the crown and matter of succession

Daemon might be a complicated character but we've seen him more as a charismatic bad*ss in this show. I think this series is showing more about how complex Viserys, Rhaenyra, and Alicent really are. I really enjoyed that scene between Alicent and her father. We finally got to hear what's really her inner thoughts and feelings. I believe Alicent will be just as complex as Rhaenyra as the series progresses. Because I actually think she has a good heart. She's practically a Targaryen since she grew up next to them. I believe Alicent really does love Viserys and still deeply cares about Rhaenyra. But then she wants to also please her father. It's a tough balancing act for her while still being a mother while loving and supporting her children. By making Alicent more likeable, it can make us torn when she and Rhaenyra become bitter rivals. It's really a terrific show so far. I thought maybe the battle scene at the end would piss off book fans who preferred earlier seasons of GOT that was slow-burning and thought it got too Hollywood blockbuster by S4. But I guess not because they seem to love it. Didn't bother them. One of the greatest shows I have ever seen with great character development is still Mad Men. I think HOT D is reaching their level. For me, the dragon scenes are cool but I'd rather have great character development and this series has at least 4 characters with so many layers. I don't mind the quieter scenes like Rhaenyra talking to her father or Criston or Alicent talking to Viserys or her father. Those are the scenes that makes GOT/HOT D great. The dragons and battle scenes are the superficial stuff.

I agree Alicent is as complex as Rhaenyra although she is her opposite in manner and personality. While I think that Alicent does care about Viserys and Rhaenyra but to what extent, I'm still conflicted on that. What the episode shows me is a young woman so attuned with the court, who's so good at politicking. She gently moved Viserys to do things for her, without pushing him to do so. The 'assist' she suggested for the Step Stones, worked as a slight toward Daemon and worked to elevate her reputation of kindness in front of her husband. ::Chef's kiss:: She knew also when to gently wield her position against Rhaenyra (in private), reminding her that she is indeed queen, since Rhaenyra has been acting very rebellious/abrasive. But in public, Alicent shows unity and generosity when she defends Rhaenyra amongst the court ladies. I was so just impressed by her. I was half-expecting, Cersei 2.0, a subtle as a dump truck LOL, honestly after reading the novel, but the show made her more complex than that. She moves the pieces gently and subtly. She proves to be a very effective game player indeed at a very young age.

Fantastic episode, I really really REALLY loved everything about it! Keep it up guys. My main criticisms so far is the pretty weak and underwhelming action so far (especially in terms of the way it's shot and edited), and the enormous time skips. I can understand the time skips, but I expect better from the action side of things at least... Otherwise, it's been an absolute joy each week

I really like that with everything else going on (dragons, royal dramas, war) at the heart of this episode is a single dad having trouble connecting with his teenage daughter. I also like that Viserys really loves his daughter and wants her to be happy, but he knows royal traditions wont allow it.

Once again, HBO has proven how unbelievably good they are with the casting. Starting from the costimography (have to point out Steve Toussaint as Corlys Valeryon) to the portrayal itself, every character is dripping with personality. While I was quite worried of having a well-known actor, like Matt Smith, taking me out of the show, his portrayal of Daemon has done quite the opposite and immersed me in the show just that bit more. As much praise this is for the actors, it's even more so for the casting crew who felt that connection.

Alicent is clearly in a difficult position - a place her father led her to - and felt deeply the loss of her friend. @@PozoBlue Because Daemons men had already suffered so many losses, and it had been a couple of years. So for the king to only now send a measly number of ships to the cause was kind of pointless. Note how when Daemon walks along the bay after this scene, he makes sure to look down at all the lost men? That's basically telling us that if Viserys had sent troops earlier, all of this death probably wouldn't have happened, or certainly wouldn't have been as bad as it is.
