Housebarn ruin in northern Spain becomes family reunion home

About 15 years ago, Antonio Gutiérrez took a wrong turn and ended up in the mountains of Cantabria surrounded by cabins, or more specifically by cabaña pasiega. Beginning in the 16th century these "housebarns" were built in the region's high valleys to house livestock on the ground floor and people or hay on the floor above.
Enamored with the lush greenery and mountain valleys and paths (reminding him almost exactly of a favorite childhood painting), Antonio, and his wife, purchased a rundown cabaña and spent the next few years turning it into their family retreat.
The building's only occupants when they bought it were a pony and a few cows and goats and a collapsing roof meant it was on the verge of slipping into ruin, like the homes next door. The couple wanted to restore the home to be as authentic as possible so they hired local artisan and builder, Jose Manuel, who also happened to be the son of the previous owner. He added a new roof, cleaned up the limestone rock walls and added new wood flooring between floors.
The original building was actually two cabañas with a shared wall so they cut holes between the two and created one big family home large enough to house extended family and guests. The interior was furnished with castoffs they found in the streets of Madrid and donated by family and guests.

I am a poor soul who will never travel far from home. Your channel takes me around the world, and introduces me to amazing people. These men, who respect and honor history have created a place that will stand long after they have passed away. There is something truly valiant about that. Thanks for enriching my life with people who enrich humanity through place and architecture. Your channel is the best.

My nan had a marble sink in the laundry growing up, I remember saying to her that it was a bit fancy for a farm house in rural Victoria Australia in the early 1900’s, but she reminded me that they didn’t have electricity for a fridge and marble was cool enough to store their meat in/on, also the laundry was built on the cool side of the house usually. Her father was stationed in Egypt in WW1 and learnt so many local building techniques. He built their home out of mudbrick when he came back and was ridiculed by local farmers that it would be washed away after the first rain, it still stands today almost 100yo. She was very proud of his achievement.

Such a deep story that he relayed from 2:05. That was no mistake typing Cantabria instead of Asturias. That was your destiny. I found this video riveting... so enjoyed the visit to Spain. Thank you.

My maternal grandparents' summer house was one of the last places where you could just relax, just outside cell phone reception. It was peaceful, and my soul still rests when I think of that place. My late paternal great-grandmother converted a stone housebarn on the outskirts of a tiny village in Lot-et-Garonne, France, into her home in the 1980's. Her kitchen used to be a pig sty. It was a wonderful place, and in my mind's eye, it's still an ideal rural retreat. The shape of the old stone house informed her room layout, and the kitchen and dining area was one large continuous space, with a long dining table built from an old oak that fell on the road leading to her house. She modeled her garden after a medieval description of the Garden of Eden, and was only a couple of plants short of having it completed when age finally forced her to sell up and move closer to family in Scandinavia. What was before informs our choices for what we do, if we just listen to our elders and let their lifestyle inspire us.

The area reminds me of Ireland where I was born and raised until I was 6 years old. The comment he made regarding the silence, "there was a penetrating silence, what was beyond the darkens" that is exactly how I remember the wilds of Connemara as a child, I was terrified of the darkness, the wind and the one lone tree outside my bedroom window. Of course it didn't help that my grandmother would tell me the wind howling was the banshee trying to get in the house, she was very religious and superstitious.

Also, today, we can have internet for working at home and have culture/ music/ film/ informations, and about transportation, today, electric car at 13000 euros manufactured in Europe, and 250kms of range, cost 3.5€/100kms all cost included to use can make rural living with kids great again.

Just looking at this this is one of my two perfect locations. Mountains, valleys, glens, folds in the land, streams that rage in spring, what could be better than that? Well, after the part of my childhood that was spent in the mountains my parents moved to the Outback for work and ever since the desert has spoken to me in weird ways.

Some of the finest videos on utube. Watched these with fascination. Some of the most beautiful country in the world, and some of the most resourceful people ever. Its wonderful to see what real living is like. My father was raised on a farm and he instilled in me the same mind set of being resourceful and in harmony with the land and and nature. The stone buildings are a work of art no matter their age.

US don,t use Stones to build. They use wood.
@amyelizabeth8432

@@tximeleta35 this is actually true nowadays. There are some patches in the neighborhoods around here in Utah where they have built houses from brick. However no not from Stone from my knowledge.? Although nowadays it is a rare if nonexistent to build with brick, let alone stone. Too bad. House built on sand made of sticks will crumble. That is America now.

In Cantabria there are hundreds of these cabins that are disappearing because livestock is not profitable. There are places that take your breath away from how incredible they are. How nice it would be to recover them and enjoy them again.
