Hi Shannon, I greatly enjoy the videos, thanks for your time to do them! "Down" here on Long Island, in NY I have a home with some strange architecture. When you look at the front from the street, the center has a barn (gambrel) shape in the middle, with a 1 pitch gable section on the right side abutting the barn slope at 90 degrees perpendicular, and on the left side the same pitch roof abutting in the same fashion. On THIS SIDE, the sections are shed roofs with a 16x20 patio "atrium" in the center. Already long story short- except for the shed roofs, and only the garage front, there are no eaves, overhangs, etc. and no roof venting of any kind. There are knee walls front to back on either side of the gambrel (4 feet x 40 each side, first slope of the barn. I would love to draw a CAD thing or email you photos of the house. If anything like that makes it easier to figure things out, please let me know. I'm trying to properly vent and relieve some trapped hot air from the second story of my house during the hot months. Thank you Shannon!

So pretty much the builder that built the house screwed up on the installation of the insulation.What you are saying sounds about right because I had a house with the same problem and I had to do what you did and the ac in the house didn't have to run as much once I did what you did.Great video bud.Thumbs up.

Shannon - I find your videos ultimately the best! I searched for soffit ventilation but only closest one was this video. I helped a friend put new shingles/roof on his house but noticed no soffit vents (house built in 1964). I'm trying to learn how far apart should soffit vents be? Should vents be installed close to eaves corners (ends) as possible? Any harm in adding more vents than standard number to assure good ventilation?

The low pitch of the roof causes this situation where it causes lack of room for proper ventilation where it pinches roof and wall top. You solved it with ridged insulation, nice work allowing air flow is important for sure. Thanks

Very difficult to get good insulation in a shallow roof. Good idea to get the ventilation done from the outside. I usually install these in the attic. Good idea to put the foam on the boarder. I would extend those vents even further so you can add at least an r50 to the attic. I am also wondering what sort of roof vents are installed?

Thanks for another insightful video! This is a cathedral ceiling, right? How does your fix work with soffit vents? Will airflow extend through them unimpeded?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 8 жыл бұрын
+Bret Hekking This is not a cathedral ceiling. This is with soffit venting. This is creating enough unobstructed airflow area while also gaining some R value below it at the ceiling.

Good to see meticulous and professional work, honorable. ......so much crooks around doing whatever they can to get away with as little and as bad a work as possible. ......heart-warming to see professional and honorable people at work. ....I would even pay extra just to get such people doing the job, than paying less and getting crooks and being left with a dodgy result and a bad taste.

Hello Shannon. My home has vented aluminum soffit siding over existing plywood that has been opened in spots for venting. The spots in the plywood dont match up to the vented siding panels. Also, the vented siding panels contain holes so small as to appear ineffectual. Is there any way to go through both the siding and the plywood with something like, say, a round soffit vent?

Just wondering does the house have any intakes on the gable ends? I've watched all the roofing videos you posted and I think I see only 2 turtle vents on each side of the roof is that correct ?? If so you might need more turtle vents or install ridge vent. But what you did in this video was a great way of making sure you have good venting from your sofit to the attic I'm going to have to try this thanks again Shannon keep up all the Great Work

+Thomas Cervantes originally the roof had one turtle vent and a whirly bird. We installed 4 turtle vents. BTW I have never heard the term turtle vent, but I like it.

Shannon, Thanks for the video. Do you have a how-to install roof peak vents video? For some reason, my home is the only one in the neighborhood that doesn't have them. Instead, there is an attic fan. It is not currently working. I'm worried about the ventilation and I am considering asking the previous owner why those vents weren't installed.

They used cardboard blown in insulation stops around our soffits. They all warped, buckled and blocked off a lot of the airflow to the attic. There should be a strong plastic or similar for this application.

Attic baffles are the preferred way to do this but most homes of this era where never done well and pretty much none had actual baffles

Question: I have a two story house with a ridge vent. A gable fan was In the attic prior to a ridge vent being installed when a re-roof job was done in 2008. Is it true that with a ridge vent working in tandem with soffit vents, the gable fan should not be used? I have heard that the gable fan will offset the ridge vent due to the fan drawing air to it and not allowing the air to flow up to the ridge vent?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 8 жыл бұрын
That is correct also the gable fan may just draw from the ridge vent cause its closer and not give you true circulation you need form the soffit to circulated the air better

Is that cat litter stuff vermiculite?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 8 жыл бұрын
+byever1 Its actually the stone granules from the old shingles that have dropped through the joints in the roof boards while stripping. Vermiculite can be found in many older home attics though and can contain asbestos , so be careful if that is what you find.

Does a roof that has no attic and insulation is right to the roof really need ventilation? Oh the roof is tin as well.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 8 жыл бұрын
+Submanca If it is an open ceiling ,like a shed or something then really in most cases you will not need ventilation. If it is a cathedral ceiling (rafters are insulated and drywalled on bottom) then yes they do need ventilation in most climates.
@NoRoads2AllRoads

+HouseImprovements what about if you bring the insulation to the roof as in a vaulted ceiling for example or a one side pitched roof? I've seen lots of videos of people spray foaming on the underside of the OSB roofing which clearly makes it not having ventilation... would this be okay?

sir, with all due respect, you won't get a "cold spot" on the ceiling, heat rises and the heat will be right against the ceiling during winter. even if you DID get a "cold spot" on the ceiling, who cares ? we don't walk and lay down and touch the ceiling while living in the house. what you're doing there is sort of a waste of time ? if you don't have adequate roof rafter ventilation and airflow, the only answer is LESS INSULATION, and more space. period.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 6 жыл бұрын
You obviously live where it is warmer then I do. I my area you will get condensation or even frost in those spots on the coldest days.
