This is a great video! I have searched youtube for a video that shows how to add a switch to a light. Yours does this exactly as i need. I saw completely what i need to do. Now i don't have to go and hire some fat slow, lazy electrician who is going to charge me a ridiculous amount of money for almost nothing. Thank you again!!

However if you are in an a condo or apartment complex use a meter to touch the wires and test for electrical energy, non contact voltage testers have been known to lie giving a false reading of no-power because the 3 phase circuits cancel out the magnetic lines of flux associated with 3 phase circuits. Seen it happen 2x before glad my foreman warned me the first day of my apprenticeship years ago so I knew what to watch for. Test and tester to a know source then to the wire being tested and then back to the know source to ensure more reliable testing.

Nice how-to. It helped me figure out my mess I had in my basement from a previous owner. They tried to run 2 switches to one light that weren't 3-way switches. So, as you know both switches had to be on for the light to work. I ripped out the one light switch that wasn't needed and got messed up with re-wiring the switch with the addition of another wire coming into the box going to the laundry room light.

I hate to make the neutral the hot, but kudos for informing people to use black tape to indicate that the neutral on the switch was made a hot wire.

Them recessed cans can really be a pain to install, excellent video man. I would recommend you use linemans pliers for wire connecting.

Leve9, in power-through-fixture wiring, the black wire (feed) tied to the white switch wire at the pot junction box is not *neutral*. It's a hot wire that happens to be white sheathed because 14/2 wire in Canada is black and white colour coded. The 14/2 wire between light and switch forms a loop to be considered one continuous hot wire interrupted by a standard switch. Starts white at the junction, goes to the switch, changes to black, so as to be black at the light terminal. And why coded at both switch and pot, or should, with black electrical tape.

It's a regional thing. I'm Canadian and was doing some work with an architect in America, and they had no idea what I was talking about either when I said "pot light". She said they refer to them as "can lights" I believe.

Hi Shannon. Question about the insulated blue housing. If I am adding Pots to a existing ceiling that is already dry walled , can I install those blue housings from the attic side ? My plan was to cut an opening in the existing vapour barrier, install the light housing, install the blue plastic covers over the light housing and then tuk tape all around it for a seal. Can I do it this way ?

Shannon, the Globe 4" recessed lights I bought at Home Depot are IC rated to 7W LED, anything stronger insulation a minimum of 3" away from can. Given specs are usually conservative for liability reasons, would you feel comfortable with the 3" guideline? I appreciate what you do for us *know littles*.

I have one question. When you spliced together the black power to the white neutral leading to the switch, why didn't you just connect black to black, and then not having to have the possible confusion of the white being hot on the switch?

I think you're missing the whole aspect of what he is saying about the white wire is that you never ever hook a neutral wire in relay w/hot as both wires on a switch are hot w/ one being alway's hot & the other becomes hot when the switch is on. You have mostly romax w/2 wires black n white & a bare copper ground going & coming to the light' & being they are both hot wires when they are on you need to distinguish that by marking the white wire black so others later who fiddle with it know that this particular white wire is not neutral. it's just common sense!

Rookie question, how do you know the difference of the two downward black wires one being a power suppy the other is from the switch that you join to seperate wires. How do i tell which is which?

My old light fixture had 3 black wires together and 3 whites together. I replaced this light with a recessed light and I tied the wires the same way. I turned on the light with no problem. This must be the main light in the basement because i have 2 other ceiling lights. Problems in the future? I couldn't fit the wire sleeves into the romax only the loose wires, is this ok?

My hot wire in my case is coming from the breaker panel to the switch box. Then a line of Romex goes from the switch box to the ceiling light that is not hot. How would I wire up the switch and light in that scenario? Excellent video by the way.

Criticsview, switches are hot wire only connections. By using the white wire as the incoming hot wire the outgoing wire from the switch is the black wire. Anytime you see a white wire joined to a black wire it is probably going to a switch. In an ideal world there would be electrical cable with two black wires for these specific applications but putting black tape on the wire accomplishes the same thing.

watching most of these videos i notice that they some times using the earthing ( grounding wire to earth or ground the light box? noticing you didn't do that....or is that only in the switch box?

got a question, what happens if the contractor didnt install the box between the joices? ceiling is all drywalled, taped mudd, sanded and primed. ( basement.) they put 11 holes for led lighting, but the joices have roxul in them for sound proofing. ( i look in the hole and see the roxul).

The power is coming from the breaker to the light first. So that white wire from the light to the switch is carrying the power to the switch .

you need to go in the attic and install a moisture proof cover and seal it to prevent heat from the fixture from causing moisture accumulation, which will cause mold. even led's throw off heat.

If the power originates at that light, then yes. If you need a neutral at the switch for times/dimmers then you need to make sure you take a neutral to the switch box as well. If you are not clear on this please use my forum. www.house-improvements.com/forums/

Do you have a video on wiring . i just pulled 5 fluorescent lights in my new basement. they were all jumped not individually wired. I pulled all the jumps and was left with 2 main wires. Do I jut jump again for each can Im installing? need help

Good question, If your light is not rated to be against insulation then it still needs a box. It should be labeled.

In the back of the boxes there is a tab along side of the ground screw so it holds the wire in , better practice would be to wrap it though ,you are right

the way he does it is correct, but confusing for non electrical people, his feed is going to the light but it's not hitting the light right away, it goes down to the switch and comes back up to the light. But yes switching can be done many different ways, the easiest way is what you were thinking, feed at the switch and jumped at each light you want to switch...

This is used for out side cameras installations Q2:Why can we not install 24vdc or 12vdc pot lights for residential in a finished house ? we can use small wires, The small wires, which is categorized Low Voltage Wires, are easy to run.

I never realised the size of these pot lights, would this be the same install method for LED?in the uk our pot lights (down lights) are significantly smaller, even in commercial they do not reach this size, are the heat shields required under oesc and is it compulsory to twist wires or can they be terminated in wago connectors.

Depends on the light, some have built in heat shields some do not. Look to see if they are rated for insulated ceilings, if they are usually no extra heat shield is required. Wagos are just fine to use.

+GmGarlo The "CU" you are refering to, is the element symbol for Copper. That type of switch can only be used with copper wire.

You would need to run another wire from the first pot light to the second, connect blacks to black white to white, tho I dont think u can get 3 groups of wires in a single pot light so you would need to bring main power to the switch first then up to your lights.

I'm installing 8 pot lights in the basement. There are four junction boxes . Is it my understaning that they can't be hidden above the drywall? After cutting the hole, I would grab the wire and hook up the pot light. Thanks.

Only the J box attached to the pot light can be hidden because technically it will come out if you remove the light.

@@HouseImprovements --> Ok, I get it now. I thought I needed j boxes but the slim pot lights do have their own little box built in. I will get rid of all the j boxes and just feed the Romex from the switch to the first light then daisy chain it to the other three...simple.

Wow, I was thinking about redoing my ceiling between a basement and 1st floor. My objective would be to install recessed lights AND use sound proofing material like ROXUL SAFE'n'SOUND. Having to put a big blue tub like that would really negate any soundproofing? Have you ever done any sound proofing when you are forced to use a blue tub like that?

That blue thing is a vapour barrier box ,you would not need that but you would need lights that are IC rated. That means they can be installed against insulation. In our case the lights were not and thats why we needed the extra metal box inside of the blue vapour barrier box.

What if the dry wall on the ceiling is already there? How do you tack the wire to the joists? Code requires the cord is stapled 12" from the fixture and every 36" along the run. If the dry wall is up already and its a retro fit how do you do this? Or is there an exception to this rule?

If you bring power to the switch and then to the first light you can just daisy chain the rest of your lights. The way the light in this video is wired drives me nuts, especially when wires are not properly rem-marked (the white wire connected to the black should have black tape on the end). When I find that something is wired like the light in this video I rewire it from scratch.

Sorry, got little confused there...why did you cap black and white wires together in the pot light box? then why that switch requires two hot lines instead of hot and neutral, that has something to do with pot light wiring? ty

because the power comes from the light first , there is no need for a neutral wire at the switch in this method. The white wire going to the switch is carrying the power from the supply to the switch. Then when the switch is turned on the black wire carries power back to the light to light it up.
