@@sws212 Right he did, because he believed he deserved it. On some level yes, but if it were me in his shoes. "Gracie, its your father. I know i wasn't there for you, and i'm so sorry. I know this means little, but I needed to say it. I love you." Is probably what I would of said. On the outside might mean little, especially if Gracie calls up her mom and tells her what happens. Maybe some harsh words come from mother, and the daughter semi-sorta agrees with them. However, now imagine both Mom and daughter learn that he passed away. A father's last words on this earth of meaning were to tell his daughter that he loved her. Still might not really hit her, but may years down the road, it hits Gracie. My father was thinking of me at the end. that I feel is a bit of closure. Both my mother and father passed away suddenly at different times. I never got say good bye, won't get to hear their voices again, but in my memories. I try to tell her, and show her that I love her often. So that incase, the same happens to me, and I leave her suddenly. That she will always have those memories. Took time to get over the pain, and there are times and days I still get down.. But then a memory comes to me, or someone says something that sparks a memory. And I smile again. I think for the character Gracie, in time that lil message might bring just a shred of that to her. I know i'm going on, but my point is. I think the more selfish thing would be to leave things unsaid, and that the more selfless thing, though it may not seem like it at first, is to for him to face his own pain, and shame, and to get those words off his chest. Because like I said, may not today, and maybe not tomorrow, but maybe someday they will bring closure.

@@Matt-wg9xn I think it was in the earlier stages. If not treatable then at it could be slowed down but this was needed because house is sitting with someone he could have saved and if not then made life longer, so in essence this person is at deaths door and house feels he put him there. He feels he put him there because the man wasn’t interesting enough and the fact that the dying person doesn’t lash out as much because he may want house to be with him makes it all the more depressing. i've always read this part of the episode as a cautionary tale for House--at what would've become of him too, if he continued down his attitude at life and how he treats the closed ones around him. him teasing the dying man was his way of testing at how bad it would be for him when it's his time. how insightful he is at what's going on in the dying man's life is due to his ability to apply his own state of mind onto the patient's.

That very last scene, where House hands him back the phone & insists that he tell his daughter "what he needs to say," reminds me that however callous & indifferent he pretends to be 99% of the time, there's truly some remote inner place within him that does genuinely care about people. I think he felt safe allowing this side of him to show for the briefest of moments because the man was about to die, & so the situation morphed into one of those vanishingly rare moments where he felt he could make himself ever-so-slightly vulnerable. It's really incredibly sad, but at the same time, it's really a needed reminder that House isn't truly a monster.

He's not wrong, but, when you consider the larger context, he's also not right. House is, for all his bluster, deeply fearful. He's terrified of love, because losing it hurts. The problem is, as he says, we all suffer and die alone anyway. Refusing to risk additional pain won't change that. All it does do is make the inevitable suffering meaningless. Love makes pain worthwhile, because at least your suffering has a chance of making things better for someone who you think deserves it.

Same. 9 years with the man that I loved, then one day I come home and he's left and I never saw him again. No good bye. No indication whatsoever that he was unhappy. No explanation given. David Strathairn always sound so believable in his roles! I can't quite place his accent, but it was even more clear in his voice during "The Expanse"(Series) It truly allows me to believe that he is the person he pretends to be, even if it is for a brief moment before I tell myself that it is just a movie or a series.

I love how this episode deconstruct House's persona and basically shows him what will happen if he keeps this chaotic and destructive behavior. Yes, he's a smart doctor (if not the smartest around), but at the same time he's cold, insensitive and sarcastic with everyone close to him, and lives in his own little world where he tells himself that is better this way.

“I’m going to be dead in a few hours. Your secrets couldn’t be safer... unless you’re keeping them from yourself.” Reminds me of my friend years ago who was dying from late stage cancer. I sat with him and he said something very similar, he knew i had things i'll never say again. Held me hand and told me to just say whatever i wanted to get off my chest because he wouldn't exactly be blagging it. When I finished, he patted my hand. I left the room to gather myself. Minute or so later, he died.
