Most of these plants are really common in Brazil, almost everyone here could find some of them in their grandma's backyard! I was so excited to find something that is so part of the culture of my country. So, just for fun, here are some of the names of these plants in Brazilian Portuguese: Pothos: Jibóia (gee-boy-ah), means Anaconda, because of how it grows! hahahaha; Peace Lily: Lírio-da-paz, it's the same; Snake plant: Espada-de-São-Jorge (es-pah-dah-djee-Saun-johr-gee), means Saint George's sword. It represents at the same time the Catholic saint and the Orixá (oh-ree--shah) or God Ogum (oh-gun) in the African-Brazilian religions of Candomblé and Umbanda. Because of that, in Brazil the Snake plant brings protection to the owner; Dracena: the name is exactly the same!; Philodendron: the same! Only spelled differently - Filodendro (fee-loh-den-dru) The other two are not that common in Brazil, maybe one of them is a "suculenta", I don't know... I love plants and it is so nice and lovely to see other people that love it too! And to have the opportunity to always learn from the masters! Greetings from Brazil!

Bailey May, I use a small piece of screen wire. I ran out, so maybe a coffee filter is in order. Wouldn’t repeatedly watering the plant cause the filter to disintegrate though?

7:20 No, you don't need a pot with a hole in the bottom. I hate those because I don't want the pot to leak. I simply repot into a cheap plastic pot with holes, and then I have a slightly larger and more expensive pot that I put it in with some gravel in the bottom. I place the plastic pot inside the graveled, drainless pot. This allows excess water to drain out of the plastic pot, and excess water can evaporate.

So… You *do* plant in a pot with a holes (or holes) in the bottom *-as you should-* then you’re placing that pot into a decorative (holeless) *cover pot.* Pretty common way to pot a plant, one that some better plant retailers will do for you automatically. Nursery grow pots are great to save for re-using, since they fit so nicely into a variety of cover pots. One of my favorite things to use as a cover pot is vintage crock, whose sizes are compatible with standard nursery pots.

another reason plants die, is people simply do NOT give them enough indoor light in winter they need all they can get, the suns strength is half in winter, than it is in summer, mine are all in bright light and i shut the blinds mid day as not to over do the sun, works great for me but some people simply cannot stop themselves from over watering haha, i know my best friend does, and hers thrive haha, how i dont know, but they do, i live in the southern us, so mine simply need mosture in winter and sun

One of the most forgotten tropical plants for indoors is the Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra Elatior). They were very popular years ago but have fallen out of favor. They are almost indestructible and do very well in a dry low light environment. They are one of my favorite plants.

Does everyone water their plants from the top? I think watering from the bottom, filling the saucer is easier. Less chance to overwater, and the roots can drink the amount of water they need. I never let my plants sit in water more than 20 minutes. If the saucer goes dry fast, I add a little more, then dump off the excess after 20 minutes. Just curious what everyone else does. Watering from below keeps things less messy too. No overflow of soil, and no issues having to try to find a place to water through all of the bushy foliage.

I have several plants that are potted high and I water them from the bottom. Also I water from the bottom when I know the plant is really root bound they're going to suck that moisture right up. Sometimes too if dealing with fungus gnats and you simply can't get rid of them bottom watering would not be a bad idea. But usually if you're a good plant parent which sometimes I am sometimes I'm not LOL, especially in the winter time you want to have your plants on pebble trays, so the moisture evaporates around the plants and provides humidity during the week...

It doesn't have to be, I promise! If you start with small, easy ones like the Snake Plant and slowly work your way up to bigger plants that need more frequent watering it's easy to adjust. Doing it this way worked well for me. Now my house looks like a greenhouse.

Some plants enjoy being a bit rootbound, like schefflera and sansevieria. I just got this schefflera arboricola from Wal-Mart and it is extremely rootbound, but growing very well, so I'm not going to rush to repot it.

Good video. Thank you. Sharon's suggestion -- you can do this with other plants, but, the tips of the leaves of a spider plant sometimes turn brown ; you can cut those off, but, cut them at a point with a pair of scissors, similar to the way the leave pointed in the first place. You will barely even know the tip of the leave was ever brown.

The longest one I have alive has been for a year. It’s the current one I have BUT it has been slowly dying off. I’ve tried all the tips and tricks I could research. Once this one goes, I will never get another spider plant.

At 7:45, this gentleman should have broken up the root ball at the base a bit so the plant roots would go out into the new soil. Also when watering a newly transplanted plant like that, be sure to water the pot bound specimen and the new soil evenly, because many times the pot bound inner plant will dry out and the new soil will be wet so you have to check that. This is a really good simple guide for the beginning house plant enthusiast.

It's funny I have all these plants, but I also have a lot of orchids which are high maintenance and are easily killed by too much sun or watering. I am not sure about the jade plant since I managed to almost kill it (maybe too much water ?). I find that the Gollum one is healthier and easier to look after. I would ad the dieffenbachia to this list since it is a very resilient plant. I have had one for 6 years, and I have multiplied it and cut it so many times that I don't remember which one is the original stem. You can forget to water it for a month and it will still look good as new.

I love plants. Out doors as well as in. Understand the plant's needs. Even better, understand It's dislikes. They seem to do one of three things: pine, nothing, thrive, - or head long to the mulch pile. A pothos will still be there when you come home from a year in Italy. An orchid will die in front of your eyes. If you understand the plant's needs and what it will not tolerate you'll both be fine. It's like keeping anything. Give it what it wants and needs, whatever it is, and you'll be fine. Orchids to.

Few leaves in my peace lily is dropping a bit but the other leaves seem fine. I changed it to a slightly bigger pot after getting it home and for a few days placed it near a west window (saw the side close to the window droop) but now moved it 5 feet away from the window. Watered it once so far. Wonder why a few leads are dropping and the rest seem fine.

Hello from Puerto Rico!!! First timer on your channel and just subscribed. My channel is in spanish. Starting to love houseplants and they grow well in this humidity. 🙋🏼‍♀️🪴

Peace Lilies hate chlorinated water. The leaves will turn black on the far outer edge and crust up. Not just old ones, all of them.

Should you loosen the roots at the bottom of the spider plant that are growing in a circle? Or do you just leave them the way they are?

Generally, yes. Just gently massage them until they come loose. Otherwise, in the case of most plants, it'll continue growing in circles. I'm not personally familiar with spider plants overgrowing so I can't remember if they like cramped pots, but most don't.

That;s a cute way to say that houseplants are southern country's weeds...if you go on vacation you will find your houseplants growing all over things and people trying to rip them out.

Today I bought three different types of cacti plants potted in separate 2" pots. I re-potted them together in a larger pot. Was that okay or a mistake? Should I have instead put them in their own separate pots? I have a pothos plant that I have wrapped around the pot several times instead of hanging it and allowing the vines to hang. Is that okay or should I let the vines hang?

Very very useful and to the point video but the background music is too loud so little hard to focus.
