This is the first Tortuga bag that had caught my attention for its look and function, so I really appreciate the detailed and honest review. I feel like you often key in on the same things I do in bags, the good and the not-so-good, really dig your reviews. Thanks! On records: 90s hip hop classics get my vote. Tribe’s Low End Theory and Mos Def’s Black on Both Sides are two of my faves that would look great back there.

I like the laptop and lightness, I actually prefer something this size and shaped like this to not have full panel opening, half zip feels more secure, I only like clamshell on big travel bags that I will only open at a destination. You only need your crap to spill out cause of clamshell to be wary. I prefer the vertical orientation of the luggage pass through too, but yeah it’s too low and thin. I don’t like stretchy water bottle pockets as that stuff never lasts. Maybe on a packable pack or a pack you intend to replace relatively soon. Non stretch solid bottle holders are buy it for life, they just will never look flush. If I was really watching weight it’s a good personal item bag. Polyester doesn’t bother me, I’ve never experienced any downsides vs nylon and its lighter. Xpac is sorta hyped sometimes, I like ecopak more. I’m not that concerned with dirt either, I prefer things to look like they get used. But I have experienced stretchy materials failing early with use, so I avoid that.

Appreciate the honest review. This is one of the bags I was considering among others. Things like the admin panel discouraged me from purchasing - I'm happy to hear you came to the same conclusion. Overall it's a pretty nice looking bag, but some of those details you hit on made this a pass for me.

I'm a fan of their outbreaker line; the outbreaker laptop backpack is one of my favorites. This new line has felt disappointing. They seem to cost more for less quality and function

I have their travel pack. It looks beautiful, but the stitching came out, on the internal pockets, on its maiden voyage. I found it disappointing. Tha pack itself held up… just the internal pockets were weak.

Great review as always George!You are spot on about the water bottle pockets. Carried a bag for almost 10 years with that material and had to repair holes quite a few times because of how easy the material would tear.

George, you are THE man! You just saved me $250. I have been back and forth on this bag for months. What I really want is the equivalet of an Evergoods CHZ22 with plenty of external storage access. Huge water bottle pockets are a must. I have their CTB26, but it is just way too big for me for an EDC bag. If you know of another great bag in that 20-22L size, with those specs, please let me know. I have the A19 Whitley, and it is VERY close, but the water bottle pockets are way too small.

I think you actually missed the purpose of this bag. It’s a Personal Carry on size for the airlines (not a max carry on, It airline personal item sized) - designed to fit within the average measurements and slide under the airline chair while still letting you get to your stuff. Being an EDC would be a side hustle for it, but not the primary purpose. Also that material is what they make sails out of - it is far from cheap. I suspect the outside pocket is intended for travel snacks or ear phones. If I had to guess on the business card holder, I’d say it was for your Airline status card club membership cards (such as the Admirals Clubs). Stuff you don’t want in your wallet, but may need to carry while traveling. Lastly the design for sitting upright on the roller luggage is to keep everything from getting scrambled inside by having it sit upright and not sideways.

Great review. I respect the honesty. I think a cool idea would be to do some lower cost bags that really are good deals. Ogio and Tomtoc come to mind.
