Fred MacMurray was synonymous with his charming characters, such as the all-American television dad Steve Douglas on My Three Sons. The actor was known to millions for his work in more than 100 movies and many popular television shows, but what most admirers don’t realize is that he created a life for himself far from Hollywood on a ranch outside of Healdsburg, California.

I met Fred MacMurray when I was a teenager working as a soda jerk at the corner drug store in Greenville, CA. It was a summer day in the mid 1960s when he, his wife and two of their children came in for milkshakes or ice cream sodas. I was working and had learned to be professional, so I didn't ask for his autograph, but he did say he was camping up at Round Valley Lake. So, after work, I took my bike up the 3 miles of narrow, windy paved road, walking much of the way because it was so steep and my bicycle had but one gear. I found his campsite, got his autograph, chatted a moment, then headed back down the hill. I lost control on a sharp curve, going SO fast and crashed. Lots of road rash, torn clothing, broken glasses and late home from work - boy was I in trouble from Mom. But I had Fred MacMurray's autograph. In pencil. Years later, when rummaging through my childhood keepsakes, I discovered what happens to paper and pencil script with age. It yellows, fades and deteriorates and the only thing left is this memory I share with you. I'm 70 now and I still remember all the joy and the pain. Life is good.

Jim McClain Thank you so much for sharing your story. So many little things in there resonate with me as I am 66 years old. People our age are watching a very different world from the one we grew up in emerge. Soda jerks and riding bicycles 3 miles are foreign things today. I wouldn’t take a million dollars for the memories we have and the privilege of growing up as Baby Boomers. We knew the “great stars” of Hollywood, like Mr. MacMurray.

I grew up in a little town on the central coast of California and we had two TV channels. Late night TV programming was re-runs of My Three Sons, Petticoat Junction, I Love Lucy, and Hazel. My mom worked late at a restaurant, so I would watch TV and wait for her to come home. Fred MacMurray was a big part of my childhood and I hope I learned all the lessons he tried to teach his boys. I never imagined what his private life was and I'm so glad to visit his ranch and hear his daughter's memories.

She has an incredibly relaxing voice, Perfectly at peace with who she is in her life. I hear in her voice a kind and loving person. That place is special, uncorrupted and as it was; one expects Fred to walk in at any time. I'm sure she hears the voices of her parents all the time. Family and history are everywhere, and I remember her father as a result of seeing where he lived. A wonderful and well-done interview.

I have gone back time after time to listen and to watch. It makes me feel so comfortable listening to her tell about her parents and their wonderful home. Today all we see is these big million dollar homes with no personality in them but here you can see a family home and just picture them from the swing on the porch to them sitting around the fire place at night. She tells such a wonderful story of their life and the sound of her voice tells how loving her family was. You can almost hear the voices as you go through each room. Imagine everyone around the table talking and laughing. The table for 25 cents must bring back such memories for her. I can remember doing things with just me and my dad and it brings a tear to me. Her family was so lucky to have that wonderful home and such wonderful memories. Thank you for sharing 🥰

I loved your father. What an AMAZING actor, and man. My most favorite of all was "Follow Me Boys". How he touched the lives of all those boys and turned them into good, wholesome, and humbled adults. Just as he was. That's what I always saw in him. Even in "My Three Sons" he was able to give answers to Uncle Charlie and the boys that sounded so real and natural. He was a humble man and it showed in his work. You have to be so proud to call him Daddy. RIP Fred MacMurry.

If I could like this video as many times as I watched it, it would have received a thousand likes just from me. This house along with Kate's velvety soothing voice makes me so nostalgic...not because I had a similar life or house but because it is everything I ever wanted my life to be. I have always believed a home plays a crucial role in shaping one's character. This video is a perfect testimony of this belief. Someday I wish to visit this house and I hope I get a chance to feel every emotion Kate expressed about the 'sound of the wind' and 'smell of the coffee'.

I love your farm. I hope you live there now. I loved my Irish Dad like you loved yours. My home in the mountains is full of antiques from Grandma and Mom and my own .Every little thing reminds me of them. On my 100 year old butcher block with the wooden rolling pin I have Grandma's plate from 1930s that she would defrost her steaks on Saturday night. She cracked it one night washing it then glued it back together. Now I am 76 and it has stayed glued all these years and I touch it as I walk by. I smile as I touch her meat grinder held to the side of the counter and I reach for her wooden recipe box with the rooster on the lid and open it to all her hand written recipes many the her Yugoslavian ones. I run my hand over the wooden box that holds her silverware that she saved for buying 4 pieces at a time for $3.95 until she had it all. My home is a loving memory to grandparents and parents and children and grandchildren with a toy room dating back to the 1930s. Memory rooms like yours 😉

Your dad always reminded me of my father, and after listening to your memories I know my instincts were right. So happy you mentioned Zane Grey, one of my dad's favourite authors also.

Beautiful home and the countryside surrounding this home. So glad the home has remained the same and the furnishings and especially the kitchen. A slice of heaven.
