If I already have a bachelor's degree from my home country, is it possible for me to immediately apply to OTS after getting my citizenship expedited at BMT (Given that I'm a green card holder)? Or do I have to wait for a couple more years before applying to OTS as an enlistee?

I’ve heard that OTS is very competitive and degree-dependent as well. I’m currently going through the weight loss process so I can enlist. I’m 26 with army experience (non-glossary prior service) and will have about 25 credits towards my Associates by the time I ship to BMT when that time comes. What are some steps I can take to get a jump start towards building up a good rapport and packet to submit for OTS?

Try and go for below the zone senior airmen. All the stuff you’d have to do to get that would definitely help. Also, become part of some professional organizations, but not just a member, become a counsel member. That will help too. Just try and lead at the highest possible level you can at your rank, and maybe the rank above you. Also, there’s enlisted to commissioned programs you can look that will really help you if accepted. From what I understand, it's hard to talk about what they do because almost 100% of it is Top Secret. But it's an extremely competitive process. 2 people at my ROTC detachment got it which is unheard of, because only 8-12 OSI positions drop for ROTC every year. It's similar to putting your package in for OTS, except FAR more difficult. And although your enlisted job isn't crucial, having a degree in the criminal justice field is very beneficial, because the job is essentially being a detective. That's about all I know, and I think one of the main reasons the 2 cadets got that job is because our previous wing commander (I think, I wasn't hear for her) is one of the generals at the Education MAJCOM, so her letter of recommendation for them looked VERY good on their packet.

Is there any way to guarantee you're applying for an active-duty pilot spot when you're submitting your packet? I want to fly, whether it be for the airlines or Air Force, and I'd prefer Active Duty over Guard/Reserve, but I haven't been able to find anything about applying for a pilot package specifically. I spoke with a Major who did his 10 then went reserves flying C-130's, as well as a Captain CSO who was going to UPT, and both recommended I look into flying strictly reserves anyway, and I know that application process for a specific airframe is available, and if there's no real guarantee about active duty flying, my plan is to go that route. I am going to enlist with 48 credit hours (just gotta get down to DEP in, but I've already been cleared for it), and am planning to take a 6 year so I have time to complete my bachelors as well as trying to get my PPL to boost my PCSM, whether it be for an active duty or guard/reserve pilot job.
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 жыл бұрын
So yea. If you’re trying to be a pilot, you can commission directly into a pilot job as long as you qualify for it. As far as air frames, I don’t know how it works for reserve, but for active duty you have to do well in training to get the better air crafts.
@brendanpeck9780
@brendanpeck9780 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jodywithawhy For guard/reserve, you apply to individual bases, similar with regular enlisted jobs. I don't remember if it was a video of yours, or someone else's but I saw one video explaining that process. So if I wanted to fly C-17's, I just need to apply to a base for a C-17 pilot spot and it's more like a traditional job hiring. But you say you can commission directly if you qualify, do you know the qualifications? I know from being in ROTC, there was never one set baseline to be "guaranteed" a pilot spot, which is one of the reasons I quit that. I really don't care which airframe I'm assigned to, I just want to commission on active duty knowing that I will be heading to UPT after OTS.
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 жыл бұрын
So in active duty, when you talk to the officer recruiter, you let them know you wanna be a rated officer. They’ll start working to qualify you for a pilot position. You just have to make the qualifications and get accepted. For reserve and guard, you are right about finding a base with the air craft you wanna fly. Whatever base has the air craft you wanna fly, that’s the one you apply to. I don’t know how it works for applying (if it’s the same as active or not) but I assume it is.

Hello! I am currently a second semester junior about to graduate from college with a Bachelors of Science in Political Science. I have been watching a lot of videos about joining the Air Force, and I am interested in becoming an Officer. I wanted to know what are some tips I can do currently to prepare. I have already reached out to a recruiter. What advice/tips could you all give me? I have also thought about enlisting first and making the transition over to officer after enlisting for four years, law school, and then go back in. I want to become a JAG Officer however, I thought about enlisting as paralegal just to get the experience being in the military and doing that job first before becoming an officer. Hope that makes sense. Thanks!
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 жыл бұрын
So if you’re finishing your degree, I’d recommend you finish that degree for the plans you have. It’ll be really difficult to come in as a paralegal for the enlisted side, because the job is not common. Unless you were willing to go enlisted being open to more jobs than paralegal, I would say pursue officer. If you want tips on becoming an officer, I’d recommend you start studying for the AFOQT now and start preparing yourself physically as well. Also make sure your GPA is solid. The minimum requirement is 2.0, but that most likely won’t work. You wanna aim for 3.3 or higher. Make it your goal to become the president, captain, or MVP of all clubs and sports teams in which you participate. This helps with leadership, and being an officer is all about leadership. Keep your nose clean. Being an officer requires you to have a clean background. Any felonies or hard misdemeanors could disqualify you.

@@Jodywithawhy I need to be specific with my recruiter and tell him that I am interested in becoming an officer? I do have jobs that I am still interested in outside of being a paralegal that fall on the enlisted and officer spectrum however, I know that being an officer is all about leading, and I want to ensure I can do that however, my concern is making sure I am able to lead people and jobs that I know something about. If I am coming in from the civilian life are they going to teach me about those I am suppose to be overseeing? I will graduate in December 2021. Is there a demand for Officer Positions currently and can my application be submitted early? I know some people say it take 1 year or more. Just some of my concerns! I believe that being an Officer would be great for me though!
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 жыл бұрын
I believe you can start the process one year out from graduation. It does take a little while, so you might wanna reach out to a recruiter. And yes you make it clear to them if you wanna do officer or enlisted. Or in your case both. Which means you’d start the Officer process and if you aren’t accepted, they just continue your process for enlisted. As far as being an officer, it depends on your degree and what you’re trying to do. Specific degrees can go into specific jobs, but if your degree is a general degree and you’re not trying to go rated, getting a job can be random. They do teach you the job for whatever job you go into.

Also, do people become Officers, don’t like it and choose to enlist even though I know that makes 0 sense to switch over to a less pay in some cases.
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 жыл бұрын
They usually won’t let you go enlisted after being an officer. But as far as enlisted first, I think some of the best officers have been enlisted first. They understand both sides of the house, and they understand the people better. So in my opinion there’s nothing wrong with going enlisted first, then switching. But it really depends on your situation and goals. Either way, you’d be fine.
