How 5 Movie Props Are Made To Be Eaten | Movies Insider

Prop makers frequently have to make props that aren’t just handled, but consumed by an actor. Food stylists like Melissa McSorley have to replicate an object’s true properties while making something safe to eat. Typical prop blood can be safe to put around an actor’s mouth is small qualities, but in HBO’s “True Blood,” the characters had to consume a lot of blood, meaning her concoction had to go far beyond red juice. She also found ways to replicate the viscosity of blood. McSorley used cleverly disguised dates to imitate a live cockroach for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” and made edible maggots from scratch for Netflix’s “Daybreak,” so she wouldn’t harm any actual live maggots.

To be honest, not every cockroach are edible... Some are clean and some are dirty full of harmful bacteria... But no need to worry cockroach are actually the cleanest insect in the jungle because they clean themself... The household cockroach are very dirty... There are more than 4600 species of cockroaches and some are very clean and other are very dirty, you would die if you eat the dirty one

This is truly an underrated Hollywood job, as a viewer you never consider long filming hours/multiple takes could affect the food in a scene and the food stylist had to research for substitutes. As for the gross stuff made edible, that's even more impressive lol she had to be an impromptu scientist and research how cockroaches look like, how a plant-eating monster poop would look lmao, so interesting

She surely did a perfect job with the dates When I was little I lived in a place where cockroaches are pretty big and sometimes if I opened a door in the night a roach could come inside and walk over my feet. I remembered that so clearly that I was seriously scared and disgusted about eating dates because the texture and shape are so similar. Even to this day it's still a bit hard for me not to think I'm eating a cockroach, the only dates I'm okay with eating now are the darker round and soft ones from Tunisia.

This is so awesome. I mean, it must be difficult to be an actor and actually eat any or even hold any of these. The human body is so smart that our eyes recognizes something and the brain sends signals to the rest of the body saying: dont do this, this is bad. Is a natural response to run away from a disgusting or dangerous situation, even though we as an audience and the actors know that they are gonna be ok after the shoot, even thought we know and they know anything that they do infront of the camera is real, and they have to sell the emotions so we can translate them and feel disgust, danger or pleasure. This is really the secret behind movie magic.

I'm only going under an assumption here that these food stylist professionals may have an initial background in culinary courses, since presentation is also an important factor in being a chef. I've been working as an SFX techie for some 16-17 years now, I got into the business through a friend who knew someone that had already made special effects for a number of years. So, he introduced me to this guy, I started helping out in the shop and ended up being hired. It should be said that I've always been inventing and building stuff, and I've worked as a professional pyrotechnician for 10 years, so my background is 50/50 self-taught/education. At the time I was hired, I was already working on some effects for another friend who went to film school. I think most people in this line of work, get into it as a result of their interests, and sort of gravitate towards companies that do this kind of work. People who mess around with latex, silicone, and epoxy as a hobby develop a certain combination of skills you can't really find anywhere else. The "problem" you might call it, is that it can be hard to find a regular job if you for some reason all of the sudden find yourself unemployed, I did at one point because the company went down due to poor leadership, and it's remarkable how many people won't hire someone with as diverse a skill set like mine, because once they hear what you've been doing before, they assume you'll get bored after a few weeks or months, and leave. I reckon there might be some truth to that, I rarely have two days alike, and I get to use my hands as much as my head, often solving unusual problems nobody has really had to solve before, or solved before successfully. Not a whole lot of people can say that. As a kid I wanted to get into either SFX, or the demining business, but as I grew up, I found out most demining companies preferred people with a military background, and as I'm really bad at taking orders, the military wasn't for me. To be honest, I think I'm happier where I am, ok, clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance would be hilarious, but I think it'd get boring in the long run. If memory serves, the deminers that get hurt on the job, have statistically been at it for 17 years, on either side of the 17-year mark, the number of accidents decreases for some reason, so there seems to be a certain level of complacency people tend to develop, and I can only conclude that is because they no longer feel the need to stay sharp.

@tylisirn
@tylisirn 2 жыл бұрын
It depends. Sometimes yes, sometimes not. In films budget is often less of an obstacle to the creative writing, but in television writers are usually more aware of their budgetary restrictions when writing. It also depends on how closely the writers are working with the show. In house writers and staff writers are more aware of the budget and practical limitations than external writers and guest writers. And sometimes the producers specifically request certain kinds of scripts based on the budget limits (usually it's "write cheaply", but sometimes it is "we have the budget, write big").

Practical effects, props, and makeup and costume are my favourite hollywood behind the sceens things to look into. It's so fascinating to watch people transform into a monster or watch as props are built or as an effect is set up.

This really helped me get less creeped out. And i had always wondered how do the vampire movies show people drinking blood...like usually cheap movies or shows show cranberry juice which is really thin and transparent so got me wondering how these movies show people drinking real looking blood..thanks for this video

The poop made me laugh because my family have made ‘date logs’ and weird stuff that look like poop and it was really hard to eat them because of how much they looked like poop so I get what he meant at the end of the video lol

Heheheh yeah... If you've ever cooked red or yellow split lentil dhal, the visual comparison between that & the um... more liquid form of poop (or alternatively a regurgitated version) is decidedly disturbing at times too, IMO!! 😆 It's totally delicious, but you maybe wanna not think about it too hard when eating it... 🙈
