When food is involved in a movie or TV show, food stylists are often hired to make sure food looks good and fresh on screen, and that there is enough for endless takes. Food stylist Zoe Hegedus showed us how she did this in 2019's "Midsommar." Over the course of production, she had to bake over 100 of the film's signature pies, and even have fresh fish flown from France to Hungary for a pivotal scene. That's a day in the life of a food stylist.

The first movie was a nightmare for the food stylists because the director insisted on using real food for all the feasts, and they would take days to shoot. In the later movies, a lot of the food was just props.

When I was little I would always get mad at the characters for wasting food like just getting up and leaving for school or work when their mom or wife had this whole giant delicious looking breakfast all laid out for the family and everyone only just like grabbed a piece of toast, an apple, or a quick sip of coffee and ran out. I was just like what the heck?! They better not waste all that good food. Now I realize though that it might not have all been edible or all taste as good as it looked.

First off... I'm Swedish and I've been celebrating midsommar all my life and none of the food is right in the movie. Yes we some of the ingredients are right but it's all in the wrong season. What we do eat on midsommar is a fresh harvest of potatoes, pickled harring (not raw), cured salmon, snaps ( a type of liquor) and strawberry cake witch fresh strawberrys. The crawfish is a another thing, a whole other feast with only crawfish, cheese pie and snaps (liquor) And a pigs head on midsommar is so bad... You would never slaughter pigs that early on the year. But on Christmas we have julbord and there we eat alot of pork, and pickled harring and potatoes. All of this and these foods are just a Google away... I don't know what and where the researched this...

I work on movies and TV shows as a chef for talent and crew. The food stylist is usually part of the props department and comes to grab real food from the chefs and from craft services quite often. Things change and go wrong quite often so this job requires lots of thinking on the spot like all production jobs.

Your explanation for why you believe they used the real herring being that Florence would "act better" completely undermines the fact she's a skilled performer. You don't need it to be real to act. That's the point. It most likely handled better than a prop and only the authentic fish was acceptable for the same reasons as other foods.

I can’t get over how the way he says “midsommar” sound like hmm... almost like a Middle Eastern first and last name (Mid Zamar)? 😹 The pronunciation is not the absolute worst but I did not recognise the word at first.

This is such an important aspect of movie making that barely gets any attention. Food stylists need to be so creative and diligent, it's really impressive. But damn, I feel pretty sad about the all the food waste that must result from movie/TV productions.

Yes, but who would eat it? Hey, I'm a cheapo who would eat old leftovers as long as they aren't spoiled, but I wouldn't eat the food left on set. They film one scene for 12 hours, and a lot of people have been breathing on it. Usually props are saved for another use but obviously food spoils. It's for art's sake anyway. They weren't really wasting it.

Bro ngl That fish looked delicious. If it was fresh. Floridian here. When I was a kid, my grandfather would take me salt water fishing in the Gulf. If we caught something good, we would kill it, gut it, cook it and dig in right there. I still remember trying raw fish when he offered. It was okay, though I can get how she feels. I have a rule of not eating "fresh" frozen fish.
