I have to imagine the only reason the SKS is under scrutiny is because of it's popularity and the ability to accept a detachable box magazine.

I agree. It’s drives me crazy because with a little ingenuity, *anything* can accept a detachable box magazine. Its just that such magazines are readily available for the SKS.

922R is only for rifles being SOLD that hold over 10 rounds, it's why I like that zastava sells barreled receivers with no US parts, a semi AL trigger that's tuned is great and cheaper. Put on some milsurp wood, handgrip, nuzzle break and surplus mags. For example if I get something like a wasr or arsenal I'm going to buy a romy/bulgy FGC,piston, piston pin, muzzle device and surplus or imported furniture. US made FCGs don't play nice with an AK but a surplus with a tune and a spot if welding to get a short reset will be the best of all. New Romy wood is awful and I like laminated wood, I only want to use surplus mags. I did hear 1 guy got convicted but he made an open boot semi sten that could have been readily convertible. Posted about it and they slapped it on as an extra. The amount of rofrearm parts made outside the US is high even in ARs The rule only applies as I'm sure manufacturers wanted protection from imports. Unless you have or are doing a proper AK mag conversion it does not apply, don't even bother with the tapconstyle duckbil mags. Invest in smooth stripper clips and learn how to bottom load. With old used SKS rifles lasting forever it just goes to show how good chrome lining can make all the difference same with CHF barrels. If I have a rifle in a millitary calibersx unless the original or modern version does not have it then I demand it every time. Corrosive primers are much more reliable and can be stored for a very long time but even if not having a chrome lined CHF barrels is just so nicex I even prefer them on pistols also but not many have them. Not s fan of nitride and the US is one of the very few nations that uses button rifling more than CHF.

Well explained! ☆☆☆☆☆ Sorta-kinda-but-not-wholly related. Is an Albanian bolt carrier: a) interchangeable with and, b) capable of functioning perfectly fine on a Russian or Chinese SKS?
@Triangle26
@Triangle26 11 ай бұрын
Short answer: yes to all. The Albanian rifles were actually designed by the Chinese on request, and were designed to be issued alongside Type 56 Carbines. Aside from the furniture, the uniquely profiled Albanian components (carrier, firing pin, magazine, bayonet) were intended to be backwards compatible. There are even a few examples of mixed Chinese/Albanian guns in military service. Long answer: Albanian tolerances seem to be the loosest of all manufacturers, and sometimes the when mixing parts tolerances can stack just the wrong way. Cross compatibility is 100% in theory, but probably more like 95% in reality.

love your videos Your knowledge is amazing, although age 79, I sometimes get overwhelmed by the scope and scale of your information. Let me ask a question about my SKS. It was imported about 30 years ago with the blade bayonet unattached. Now, if I understand your dating scheme correctly (I believe it to be a Letter Series gun), it was made in 1959, rendering it over 50 years old and thus placing it in the C&R category. Does that mean that I can now LEGALLY install the blade bayonet on the gun without running afoul of the ATF? Many thanks for your assistance.
@Triangle26
@Triangle26 7 ай бұрын
Yes sir. It's a bit complicated - but the short version is that your rifle is 100% legal with or without the bayonet installed. Both configurations are exempt from 922(r). If the bayonet *is* installed, your rifle is in the configuration it was in at the time of manufacture (50+ years ago), and is therefor a C&R item. If the bayonet *is not* installed, your rifle is in the configuration it was in at the time of importation, and is therefor a "pre ban" item. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if it does not and I'll be happy to try and make it more clear. Either way - the takeaway is that based on the information provided, you can absolutely install your bayonet without running afoul of any US Federal Law.

@@Triangle26Thank you so much for your assistance! May I abuse your good nature one more time and ask you if I'm really dealing with a Letter Series SKS here? I actually have THREE such guns, all imported around 1992, with serial numbers I51xx, L31xx and L37xx. The "I" and the "L" characters are not exactly perfectly formed as you would see them in the English Alphabet, but they certainly don't look like Chinese characters to me. And I don't think the letters are some kind of import prefix either. All three guns have matching numbers throughout, blade bayonets, the extended barrel lug feature and the 9 o'clock rear sling swivels that you described in your SKS dating video. However, I don't see any lightening cuts, although I'm not quite sure what to look for in that regard. So, are these actually Letter Series SKS's dating to 1959, as your dating video suggests, or is this an instance in which I'm being a bit too optimistic here? Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
@Triangle26
@Triangle26 7 ай бұрын
@@brassferret7511 Based on that description, I have high confidence that the three rifles you are describing are indeed “letter series”. Thats a pretty specific combination of traits, and it would be *extremely* unusual to see any rifle meeting that description that did not also have lightening cuts. I think the most likely explanation is that the lightening cuts are present. I have a video called “Relative Quality of SKS Pattern Carbines (Part 3) - Chinese” which has some good pictures showing exactly the lightening cuts I am referring to. That comment is linked at the bottom of this comment, and the relevant section begins at the 10:25 mark. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sMmVdNWm3bfSaI0.htmlsi=AZTp6KSOsz4c8y6t

I would like to know why my 1950 Tula SKS-45 can comfortably fit 11-rounds of 7.62×39MM in it's stock box magazine when it's only supposed to fit 10. Is this an inherent design feature with 1950 Tula's, is it a worn out spring?
@Triangle26
@Triangle26 11 ай бұрын
I’ve seen that before. It is not specific to early Tula’s, it can be observed on pretty much any example. Sometimes it’s a sign of a worn spring, sometimes it’s a sign that the magazine isn’t seated properly, and sometimes it’s just the way the tolerances stack together. If you can fit 11 in the magazine with the bolt back, thats not terribly unusual. If you can fit 11 in the mag and still drop the bolt on the twelfth, that’s more concerning. Either way, if it runs reliably it’s probably fine.

Totally understandable. It is quite unfortunate that the laws are so abstract and impractical, because it is *much* easier to break these rules than it is to remain in compliance with them. As I mention in the video, generally if you change even one feature of your rifle, you will need to change quite a few other features as well - if your goal is to remain in compliance with this historically unenforced (yet very real) law.

@Triangle26
@Triangle26 11 ай бұрын
In many cases, but certainly not always. There are literally thousands of videos on KZfaq in which American citizens identify themselves, and then explicitly detail the assembly of 922R non-compliant firearms. In some cases they literally go part by part, and include footage of assembly. If the ATF ever decided to enforce 922R, it would be extremely easy for them to prosecute such people. Again I am not telling anyone what to do, but simply pointing out that "unenforceable" and "historically unenforced" are not the same thing.

@Triangle26
@Triangle26 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. You ask a great question, and I'll do my best to give you a good answer: A firearm *does not* need to be 50 years old to receive C&R classification. That is just a catch-all rule, which automatically gives C&R status to every firearm 50 or more years old. Now, the ATF also publishes a "C&R List" (linked at bottom of post), which includes a few firearms which they have determined to be C&R eligible, despite not yet being 50 years old. These selections are fairly arbitrary, but the intention was to recognize that some newer firearms are of primary interest to collectors, rather than intended for sporting or defensive use. The CZ-82 is one of the firearms the ATF has specifically listed on that published list (Page 9). In summary, if a firearm is 50 or more years old, it automatically receives C&R status, and *does not* need to appear on the ATF's published list. If a firearm is not 50 years old, yet primarily appeals to collectors, it *may* have C&R status, however it *must* be listed by name on that ATF document. I hope that helped! www.atf.gov/file/128116/download
