I’ve had my class A’s for 24 years and I drove long haul for 15 of them. It’s always fun to hear a non trucker explaining how trucks work. Donut did a pretty good job!

I’m a trucker, thank you. Correction on the transmission I drive these “automatics” and they are technically Automated Manual Transmissions they still have a clutch and do not have a torque converter!

there also called power shift or in the case of New Holland tractors power shit. still waiting to see who will be the first to Use and CVT like a Fendt Vario transmission or go Diesel electric on a truck. IMO diesel electric would be good to see its bean on freight trains for years now.

I've been lucky enough to run a wide range of trucks and transmissions, and you're right, most Eaton Fuller automated transmissions run a clutch, but other automatics like Allison or Volvo i-Shift run a torque converter and just have the two pedals. One of the trucks in our old harvest fleet had an early 10-speed EF ultrashift and I really hated it: it would always get hung up on its range selector between 5th and 6th when downshifting, and would make the Jake brake almost worthless because it would only hang out around the 1000-1200RPM range while downshifting. I hear the newer ultrashifts are better. I'm sitting in the sleeper of a 2018 Cascadia as I write this. I like my 13 speed because it gives me a fun challenging game to play while driving, makes me feel like I'm slowly mastering a long forgotten skill, and like all RoadRanger transmissions it knows how to keep the operator humble. Grind em' till you find em'!

@Scott Beeton No idea what the original comment was, but as far as cabovers go, there were a few guys that I knew that liked them. They had day cabs and did deliveries primarily down town, to tiny old ass docks under old buildings. The cabover day cab was really short with a really small wheelbase so truck would change direction much faster and in a lot smaller space. With the tandems forward, they could get in and out of docks I couldn't get into in my dock truck. Probably sucked ass on the freeway though.

The cummins doesn't just pull 80,000 lbs. In Canada they pull 140,000 lbs on most long hauls and even more in Australia. One advantage of air bags that you missed is that they also give you a good estimate of your axle weight based on the air pressure in the bags. Super handy for trucks that don't have opportunity to get the load weighed before getting loaded (such as a gravel truck).

@@RCDRONE1010 I actually asked my dad that does anyone besides me and him have the licence to drive a truck (he has semis and tractors aswell though, because of military service). He couldn't remember anyone though. And on top of that I'm the first and only one in my family licenced to do it professionally. And I even wouldn't be on this road (yep, pun intended) if it wouldn't be for my wife who's also a trucker (though she has the licence to semis and tractor-trailers, I only have for trucks). She was encouraging me to seek the education and the whole time throughout it.

Cool vid mate 👍👍 I live in Western Australia and drive road trains for a living. We cart anything from 160 to 220 tons in quad road trains. That's 2 single trailers with an A & B trailer behind it which has 86 tyres, thats for a bogie drive otherwise it would be 90 tyres for a tri drive truck. The super quads which are 4 single trailers have 98 wheels. Many companies are now moving into the big super quads as they hwve a bigger payload at 220 tons. I've also drove quad power trains that have 2 x 750hp engines. One in the truck and one in the 2nd trailer. The power trains obviously don't go on public roads like the quad road train. From memory we used to cart about a 750 ton payload, that's 1.5 million lbs. These trucks are ruffley about 4 metres tall and about 75 meters in length with the tyres about 1.5 metres tall. Would love to post a few photo's here but unfortunately I can't.

My Falseter brother was a Marine Corp Vietnam diesel mechanic and drove long haul in a cadover Mack. He became a trucker because not many people would hier a Vietnam vet at that time. He was in the Corp from 1968 thur 1972 drove long haul from 1972 thur 1992. He was like my dad after my Falseter dad died. I guess that's why truck drivers have a special place in my heart RIP Robert Schmahl April 6th 1949 to May 1st 2022. Still love you big brother

I am a young truck driver. Got into this career when I left the Marine Corps. A lot of people laughed at me for getting into such a career, however I love it. I make more than some of my engineer friends and work 4 days a week with great benefits. If anyone is lost in life and not sure what to do, get your CDL and start driving. If you don't like it, oh well you have a CDL!

I drive a 579. It's a pretty comfortable ride. They have a cab stabilizing torsion bar that keeps the cab from rocking back and forth like a freightliner. My 579 is currently getting 7.4 mpg

8:45 you air up brakes to release so first U start the engine and wait for the compressor to build up pressure. U go nowhere without air. That's a safety feature from when air operated brakes were invented.

highjix a solution for that is put some 100% rubbing alcohol in the bottoms of your tanks. And keep up on air dryer filters.

Not true when I was just starting out back in 2013 i had the lock on my 5th wheel get stuck half way so when I backed up to hook up I heard the lock sound I picked up the gear and pulled forward only to have the trailer land on the frame. After that I always do my tug test just to make sure it secure.

Anyone laughing about someone doing a visual has no business having a CDL. First thing to do when hooking or dropping, and last thing done on everything before you close your door. I get out of my seat all the time to check things, and prevented a lot of issues because of it. The more tired you are or the less you want to do it, the more important doing those checks becomes.

I’m rewatching this video after 3 years. I work alongside that company (Brenner Transport) on 2:23 as one of their fuel hauling competitors. Hauling fuel is a pretty small industry. Never would of thought I’d end up where I am right now 3 years ago.

Next you guys should explain why we stay in the middle lane and why left lane truck takes so long to pass right lane truck. ●●semi trucks are speed governed ●● so when you get a chance to pass us, do it! Stop lingering and taking your sweet time! We mite need that left lane If someone's on the shoulder or if someone is getting on the highway. Which is why in 3 or more lanes roads, we avoid the right lane. Call it trucker fun facts, that may actually save your stupid life! Lol we truckers love you guys at donut man, for real!!!!

This is the first time I've heard how air suspension in trucks works. And honestly the first thought I had in my mind was this might not be as reliable as a leaf Spring. Hats off to the people who engineered this mechanism.

As a stick hauler I chuckled when you said “up to 80,000 pounds” I’ve hauled well over 100,000 pounds with an old 90’s model Pete powered by a C-12 that was turned wide ass open with over 1,500,000 miles on the original motor. I had the same motor this truck here has only difference was the one I had was deleted and tuned. I use to race cars at stop lights when I was empty all the time. Can’t beat a Cummins.

Is it me or did weights drop? I drove a tandem axle asphalt/ dump 20 years ago on a class B and if memory serves my max wt. was 45k....truck was 20k and I could haul 25k...crapped bricks one day when a load came out to 28k and we knew DOT was in the area

AZKKZfaq it finally started letting go right before me and my pops decided to get rid of it. It started gettting loads of oil in the coolant tank and then started running hot and losing oil pressure, it would run the same amount of oil pressure goin down the highway as a Cummins would idling. The dude we sold it too blew it up in like the first month or two. We gave that truck pure hell though and had been turnt wide open most it’s entire life.

As a trucker and avid donut guy for a few years now! I’m stoked to see this video come out! I have to admit though, I really hate the automated manuals. They are so friggin sluggish (at least my companies freightliners) I’ll gladly keep my 13 spd eaton. Especially running in the Canadian PNW Vancouver area.

Most of those “automatics” are really automated manuals. They operate the same as a manual only difference is they use air pressure to shift gears and it may not always be the gear you want to be in. Seems like they’re tuned more for fuel economy than performance. They still use clutches like a traditional manual vs a hydraulic torque converter in a normal automatic. Some single axles, school buses and smaller rigs with lower weight ratings do use a torque converter though, but torque converter automatics don’t hold up over time in commercial trucks in my experience. They began to show signs of wear well under 200,0000 miles, even in some buses.

the 18 speed auto in mine can be a bit retarded sometimes, but thats what manual mode is for, especially on hills, pulling a combines 105-110,000 pounds up some steep hills would be a bit harder in auto

My company has 3 Internationals that have 13 speed autos. I want to burn the damn trucks to the ground. I know I'm not gonna have a good day if my '12 Volvo with a 10 speed standard has to go into the shop. Since they want to be stingy, I wish they had gotten Freightliners instead of Internationals. I think they did an OK job with their automatics.

I’m a semi truck mechanic and I’m actually watching this in my lunch break, but we have one of those in the shop right now. It’s not a brand new 579 but it’s a couple years old. If you care, the thermostat went out, that’s why it’s in the shop.

Yeah, because when you look at a semi, it doesn’t have a bed to put stuff in, so it’s half a truck. Semi-truck. When you look at a truck, it has a bed. So it’s a full truck, or pickup. a Pickup Truck. a truck for you to pick up things. *I mean it’s literally in the name*

The pivot bushings are also important. When they wear out it lets the 5th wheel move around and makes for a rougher ride. A lot of people don’t check them so they end up worn out. It’s a also a pretty gradual thing you might not notice over time.

@Seb C only thing I can possible see them automate is driving/navigating highways. There's no way it's going to be 100% autonomous as it'll need input for various uncontrollable situations. It might need to hop a curb in a small city to avoid a light pole, might need to pull into oncoming traffic to make a very tight turn. Might not have optimal room to safely back up into narrow parking spaces. There's almost no skill needed for 60-70% of trucking in which you could use it but you need something more than a computer and AI for the the other 30-40%.

As a truck driver of 30 years, I found this video pretty accurate. The one thing that needs clarification is the transmission. It is not an automatic, it is an AMT or Automated Manual Transmission. It is essentially a manual transmission that is shifted by the computer. The computer also controls the clutch engagement. (Yes, it has a clutch) It's all pneumatically operated and won't even go into gear if the air pressure is low. These trucks sometimes do have a torque converter automatic like an Allison, but that would be more for a route truck or trash truck.

I'm in trucking school right now and shifting gears is the hardest thing I've ever done. I've never driven stick before so trying that out on the highway is brutal lol.

hey man! we still use manual transmissions! i have a 13 speed manual in my pete 579 heavy haul truck with a drop axle and a paccar mx13 500 engine. we gross 105,500 with a 4 axle flatbed trailer. unfortunately many large companies have adopted all auto shift fleets nowadays but i am happy to say that manual transmissions in trucks are not thing of the past because its fun to shift lots of gears!

Yeah only time i've seen it, Is a company that does heavy haul, Where i live we run up to 105,500 and i tell you what a 425hp Engine isn't going to cut it. Most companies run 425-450 and MPG was about a Gallon or two better.

We can also slide the 5th wheel forward or back, same with the trailer tandems to distribute the weight between the axles. Some bigger companies have done away with the air drop suspension due to inexperienced drivers high hooking the 5th wheel and smashing the reefer (refrigeration unit on the front of the trailer) into the tractor or making tight turns and tearing the bags.
