Slurpee is arguably the world’s most popular frozen drink.
Around 13 million are sold each month around the world, bringing in over $300 million in revenue a year.
And it all started with a truck driver and an embarrassing mistake.

I would ride my bike through the snow in -15° C weather just to buy a Coke slurpee with my newspaper money when I was a kid. I bought over 1000 slurpees. My ex gf is unofficially credited as the creator of the Royal Blizzard, when she got the idea of making an ice cream "hot pocket" with fudge or peanut butter in the center. This was 2015, and though she didn't get a bonus, she was promoted to head manager and given benefits, which is almost unheard-of in the fast food industry. Edit: A lot of people calling bull. Of course her name isn't attached to the product. Then again, Edison didn't invent the light bulb, someone under his employment did. Do with that information what you want.

My niece moved to eastern Canada, soon as she gets off a plane it's to get a slurpee from Sev. She says they have no idea what a good slurpee is, it's more American.

For the record, Winnipeg sells far more than 8,300 Slurpees each month (I did a double-take at that figure, because there is no way it could be true; there are lots of individual 7-Eleven stores that sell more than 4,000 Slurpees a month on average). The actual number is an average of 188,000 per month (as of 2021).

As a kid almost 50 years ago, there was a 7/11 nearby my house selling slurpees, and a drug store a bit further away selling Icees. I can remember going in just to check the new flavors. They would do a flavor for a while, then change to something different. I liked the 7/11 better because they changed their flavors more often. Either way, I was a fan

They still do change their flavors quite often. At least around here, the marketing strategy is to have about 2-4 permanent flavors and 1-2 cycling flavors, depending on how many flavors the store carried.

I’ve worked at a summer camp’s store for the last 2 summers, and probably will again this coming year. We sell these to the campers, and they make up a significant amount of the camp’s income. I’ve made and sold more of them than I can count, have perfected the art of layering different colors and adding whipped cream swirls, and found the balance between ridiculous concepts and actual good flavor so that campers will buy them (my favorite was one that included every flavor, every topping, a chicken tender, half a churro, several packs of candy from the front of the store, and every topping we had, costing approximately $17). Despite all of that, I don’t actually like them.

When I lived I Dryden Ontario in the early 80s they made really good burgers. A single double or tripple with cheese. I think they were called a Dairy Queen Brazzer . I think now they are called the Classic. I miss the Brazzer it was bigger and tasted better. They don't make them like that anymore I don't think. If I ever go to Dryen , that would be one place I would go. To see if they make them the same.

-40 slurpees are underrated because it's a cool drink that stays consistent in texture. Unlike normal drinks that otherwise freeze and are undrinkable until they get warm, and no one wants to warm up soft drinks, that's gross.

That number for slurpees sold in Winnipeg is per store, that number is actually closer to 190.000 per month. They sell more in one month in Winnipeg than the rest of Canada combined in a month.

So dose 7-11 still get their slurpees from icee? I mean I know you said the patents expired but I assume the original licensing agreement had stipulations attached to their ability to use the name. I am just curious if the 7-11 still has to license anything from icee….. I tried to google it but I just end up with the Wikipedia articles that don’t cover that and some poorly written blog posts about it that don’t seem reliable.

Can someone explain to me why there is a difference in carbonation between Canada and the USA? I've been a Canadian Slurpee consumer for decades, and while the drinks are carbonated, it's not super-noticeable, and there is no burst of pressure when the dispensing handle is turned (which makes sense, because carbon dioxide is soluble in water at low temperatures, and there's enough liquid in a Slurpee to dissolve most of the CO2). However, when I went to Hawai'i, I had a Slurpee, and when you opened the nozzle of the machine, it released a whole bunch of pressure, the beverage came shooting out, and the texture of the drink was _frothy_ (VERY different to the Slurpees I'd become used to). I've noticed the same thing in other states as well. Even the nozzle looks different in the American 7-Elevens (it's metal, whereas Canadian ones are plastic). Clearly, Slurpees are being made differently, and yet people treat them as a uniform thing.

I worked nights in a 7-11 when I was trying to go to college. One of my duties was to put the Slurpee machine on WASH. It just stopped the refrigeration and let the ice chunks melt, there was no soap involved. My favorite time to have a Slurpee was about 2or 3 AM. The Slurpee got a lot less stiff an was easier to drink. I had a customer that was a regular at 2:30 AM to get a Slurpee for that reason.

I remember as kid going with friends to Kmart and collecting paper cups from the parking lot and trash cans that had Icee diamond coupons on them that could be redeemed for a free Icee. We would tear them roughly off the cups and take them home. We would carefully clip the coupons and tape or staple them on these cards you got from the Kmart concession. We always had completed cards ready in our pocket, this was actually the reason I started carrying a wallet because they were like cash, lol. Sometimes you would get a free ham and shredded lettuce sandwich on hamburger bun because the sell by time had just expired. Good summer vacation memories.
