When I lived off the grid in the NWT in the 1960's I washed clothes in one of those large, metal milk containers, shaved off pieces of sunlight bar soap and churned the clothes with a toilet plunger. Worked like a damn. Also scrounged an old Eaton's Acme wood stove for cooking and purchased a Grandfather Fisher stove for heat. Now 90 years old, retired in rural Saskatchewan and really envying you folks. Best wishes to you all. Makes me proud to be Canadian.

Very good documentary one of the best I've seen.I live similar to this myself and picked a few god ideas while watching for me and here is no bette way to live but a lot of people would never live like this and call us poor and dirty.The truth is we are the healthiest and richest people by far.I dreamed of living like this from a young age but the cities and small towns had me chasing the the Dollar and paying continuously in the vicious circle many get trapped in.I saved and sold everything 4years ago and made this my life and I will never turn back.I truly am blessed and deeply in love with nature and mother earth and she can really provide for me with a little elbow grease.

Except bathing once a week is not acceptable for a female. Washing daily is a must exspecially during that time of the month. I know being a man at the end of a summer day I gotta take a shower cuase I can smell myself, so I he to imagine the smell of a vigina 3 days on her period along with sweating from the heat

I followed with little pain in my hart...such great life in the life.... I live in Holland am very Lucky to have a pièce of land at the edge of an industry park and no more chance of building...i live in my gipsy wagon, half of grid...and envy you....an 75 now and pleased with good health... Take good care of my land fit vers and butterflies and hedgehoaks.. Would like to do more so i host slow travellers with tent. Love to meet people but am a hermit... Tkx for sharing your life. The ground pebble is interesting, but what I would do is probably install some kind of pipe system under the pebble and have hot water going though that pipe. The rock will capture that heat and irradiate it. I'm just not fully sure how to do it easily without an electric pump. One huge advantage of this, is 4 inch of warm rock pebble still irradiate that energy after the fire is gone, and since heat rise, no insulation is really needed (I just wouldn't go too far to the border of the house, then this might cause issues maybe. You could also have the sun hit the rock floor, which the rock will store that heat (And you will want to do the reverse in the summer, protect so the sun don't enter the cabin).

Excellent vlog, with lots of common sense information and tips to live with nature. Yes, it is hard work, but it is one's own choice in the way that this is achieved. There is no 9-5 boss looking over one's shoulder--it gives a true sense of freedom and at the same time requires a tremendous amount of self discipline. The fruits of this labor are many.

Just excellent! I’m off grid myself, and a carnivore, the bear sounds good, lack of fat is the problem with game meat. I also have a Blaze King the same model, I heat water and cook on it sometimes, excellent stove.

you can also use the Ash to make a Cement like slurry ..add clay and straw..or horsehairs....not necessarily structural but great to stucco , fill in around logs..

Just shows what you can do with determination... And no building codes...LOL. Gotta say, it is a LOT of work, been living in my own off-grid project construction site for 23 years now, and still not "done" (not even sure what that word means). There is no 'done' or 'complete' to building a self reliant way of life, there is only upkeep improvements and doing the next step. Season by season, year after year, until I can't do no more I guess.

I'm a Naga from Nagaland, India and we eat nearly everything, including imsects. One difference between carnivore/omnivore and herbivore meat is generally, carnivore/omnivore meat is softer and herbivore meat is harder. I've eaten elephant, bear, dog, cat, boar, leopard, monkey, stag, deer etc. But the best meat I've tasted is the barking deer.

The proper or easiest way to chop or split firewood. Do not put on top of another piece as was done in this video. Put the piece you want to split, put it on the ground. When you stack it like in this video and Hollywood movies, you have to raise splitting maul higher, and you do not get to swing far, which means you do not get the advantage of gravity. Gravity of the maul as you swing. Anyone testing my advice will never go back to the Hollywood method. I split hardwood oaks in Alabama that are much harder than spruce and pine as seen here and on TV. This comment is meant to be educational, not critical. As I will agree at least 70% of people split wood incorrectly mostly due to what we see on tv. I hope this helps anyone that splits wood by hand. Stop stacking your wood to split, put it on the ground

@@Elaine-br4lw great question Elaine. I never use an ax, I only use a splitting maul. I’ve never sharpened mine, one swing does the trick usually. It cannot hurt to keep it sharp. Most stores you’ll see a red handle splitter with huge triangle head, those are too heavy and worthless. Most common and easiest to use is yellow handle made of a composite material.

Those wild rabbits, as you call them, with the long back legs, are called hares in Ireland. There's another wild species we used to eat commonly that we call rabbit. Rabbit is succulent and tasty, but hare is gamey and rubbery meat for eating. They're also less common here, even though they were rarely hunted. I think I heard that they force the rabbits out of the area they occupy and don't breed as much as 'regular' rabbits.

I think bear meat is similar to beef in as far as taste. It taste greasy unless you pour off the liquid from the initial cooking then I add onion and garlic and broth of some sort.

If you eat bear from the north woods, it might be alright… but if you’re near a city, you’ll wanna check its stomach contents and make sure it hasn’t been eating garbage and carrion… if it’s filled with cereal, frosting, and bacon, then it’s been eating bait… if it’s it’s filled with corn and Berries, that’s the one you want

New sub here , hello from remote rural off grid down under AU city folk always say 2 me on my rare trips to the coast how do you do it, my answer solar and wind grow my own produce its not rocket science. Only outlay really is fuel and gas am happy with that idea, took me 10 or so years to set it up to where it is now . And yes the solar storage 24 V have always just used deep cycle batteries and inverter works for me , have a stand alone 12V deep cycle battery that powers led lighting for the house and workshop. Have a small wind generator that acts like a trickle charge battery charger over night, get a bit of wind here. Have a back up gen rarely use it even when using power tools in the workshop , as you said you learn when you can use power and when not for me its the middle of the day for workshop and high draw power tools , in having said that I rarely even turn on then gen and my battery bank handles most things. I agree walking barefoot when ever possible it does drain the negativity , may I add we don't get snow in winter where I am it gets cold for a few months though.

Stephen here. The bear pass through because we live in their space, not the other way around. We live in a meadow and that is the natural place for bears to pass through. Right now, today, we have a 2-year old grizzly who comes every day and munches on the fresh green grass that is coming up here in the warm meadow. We talk with them and they respect our space and don't touch anything. If they go into the garden my wife talks sweetly to them and they look at her inquisitively and then walk on past the garden. It is all about respect and communication, just like in human relationships.

I would love this way of life but I have a life limiting condition which needs me reliant on electricity to breathe with my ventilator and also oxygen concentrator and powered wheelchair to get anywhere. I would love this way of life and being self sufficient I am envious and sad I can’t join you!

Stephen here from the video. Yes, our property is privately owned but for all intents and purposes we are in the wilderness. 26 km from town. Mountains and lakes and trees all around us. Moose and bears as neighbours.
