He knows how a fluorescent tube works, his way of teaching is the best way anyone could teach and that is through trial and error. He shows you how a person starting from scratch would think, and how you'd slowly start piecing the clues together. He shows you what you would/could do wrong and how he does it first so you don't make that mistake too. This is the best form of teaching and I can assure you he's the best in the field when it comes to make educational content entertaining as well. Cheers Mehdi

The purpose of the filaments at the end is not to vaporize the mercury. The Hg is already in gaseous form. The pressure inside is pretty low. You can immediatly turn the tube on by using a tesla coil like you did or putting it in a microwave oven. You can also use a neon transformer (15 kV). The purpose of the filaments is to lower the voltage requirement across the bulb by using THERMOIONIC emission effect which means that when you heat a metal, it kicks off electrons. The filaments are coated with a material that emits a lot of electrons. I think it is ThO2 (A white powder). The voltage requirement across the tube is something like 93 V for a 40 W bulb once the tube is on. The startup voltage is 400 to 600 V. PS: keep in mind that the tube contains Hg. Don't throw them in the garbage.

@Heads Mess It pollutes the environment. The amount of Hg in the atmosphere keeps going up, although it is a very small amount. Once you lose it to the atmosphere, there is no easy way to get it back. From what I hear, each tube, which is about 2 m long, contains about 15 to 20 mg. Breaking 680 to 906 tubes gives you 1 cm3 of liquid Hg. //Edit: PharmaGiles is correct. My math is off. It isn't 50 to 70 tubes but more like 680 to 906 tubes.

CFLs operate the same way as flourescent tubes but most of them have the ballast and starter as electronics directly integrated and can be put into a normal Edison screw socket to replace an incandescent light bulb.
