My GE microwave from 2005 finally crapped out. At first kzfaq.infoUgkxO_Bc204MGjxDl87cOKcdgaRhzSqGmv_g I was unsure because I was looking for something with the exact same features. Found it with this one. Interior space cavity was large, but the outside was smaller than my old one. I love the one-button push for 1-6 minutes, and the 30 second add or 30 second start. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I love how you can adjust the power level during cooking. The reviews said it could not be done, but this marked all the other boxes. and happy to say, it does. I can hit 1 minute start, and change the power level from 10 to 5, 30 seconds in, without interruption. my favorite feature!

Please be EXTRA careful if you take the magnetron apart, as you could get Berylliosis from the Beryllium stored inside that "stick" pointing out. This is not a joke, breathing in Beryllium dust is extremely toxic.

In most domestic microwave ovens, especially newer ones, Aluminium may be used instead of Beryllium though. This is not a guarantee and you should still be careful if you're not 100% sure whether your magnetron contains Aluminium or Beryllium.

The stirrer is in older microwaves and was phased out because it never really worked that well. It was before they had a revolving plate, I know this because I recently got the chance to scrap some microwaves from the 70's or 80's (not sure what time period, but they had fake woodgrain so I'm pretty sure there were from those general era's).

Miles Edgeworth Isn’t its frequency of operation still below the ionizing level though? I don’t doubt that it would definitely cause microwave burns.
@amcghie7

Miles Edgeworth - Microwaves are non-ionising no matter what - particle decay, far UV and X and Gamma rays only possess enough energy to cause ionisation within molecules. Microwaves are on the thermal side of the spectrum - don't really see how they could cause cancer through their radiation? Similar to how a kettle or a conventional oven cannot cause cancer if you get too close to the elements. Its less to do with the output voltage and more to do with the electron voltage. Wikipedia actually has a fairly good article about Non-ionising radiation if you're interested.

This was great! Can you do a debunking/explanation of cellphones causing cancer please? Just like you did for the free energy video
@mortlet5180
@mortlet5180 7 жыл бұрын
MultiSciGeek; The problem with that is that cellphones CAN actually cause cancer (look up the DNA unzipping mechanism), however, non-ionising radiation is VERY inefficient at it (just compare the sterilization effectiveness of 256nm UV light vs. microwaves of equal power). This does, however, NOT mean that micro/radio waves are completely harmless though. Your cornea is actually very good at absorbing microwaves and doesn't get enough blood flow to effectively cool itself. Having enough radio/micro wave energy fall on your eye to raise its internal temperature by merely 5°C is enough to denature its protective proteins and cause a cascade eventually leading to cateracts. The other really scary part is neural excitotoxicity induced by unregulated Ca(2+) influx from the constant stimulation by the high electric and magnetic field (which can also be used for good by removing the electric field component and only sending a magnetic pulse through the skull, as in TMS therapy).

Those capacitors have bleeding resistors. I tried to make a bug zapper with a microwave capacitor and it didn't worked because the bleeding resistor discharged it from 2000 volts to 0 in a matter of seconds. Still, it is better to check just in case. Btw, could you make a power supply out of a microwaver transformer? I think it would be a cool project.

There's more to salvage on Microwave Ovens, there's the microswitches, the mains filter at the back on the top, see at 6:43, some relays on the main board. The fan blades can be used to stir water, even be used in a small dinghy with a powerful enough motor to drive the dinghy and can be used to provide air-flow at your soldering bench, if you are careful about wiring it up and protecting yourself from the mains (115 VAC or 230 VAC).

Well, the 2.4 GHz band was made publicly available for everyone because of microwaves, so... I think that the guys at IEEE didn't think it would be a problem and just made it standard because you need no license for it. Back then, the devices probably weren't capable of handling 5 GHz, but they didn't wanna go any lower than the 2.4 GHz

Yea, I'm no expert, but in my experience the ones with the wave guide shooting in from the side use a turn table for more even heat distribution... and the ones with the overhead guides use stirrers/mixers. Have seen the overhead stirrer type that also use turntables.... IMHO, side entry guides with turn tables work better. As always YMMV...

Correct, also older consumer ovens without turntables also had the stirrer. The stirrer was scrapped and turntables added a means of cost cutting. The ovens with stirrers are far superior.

Thanks for this really cool pseudo-3d visualisation of the heating pattern in a microwave! I'm a high school physics teacher and I was enthusiastic about doing the experiment to estimate the speed of light using a microwave and chocolate...until I discovered that it (usually) doesn't work. In fact, out of four microwave ovens I tried, I couldn't honestly say I got anything remotely resembling a regular "standing wave" pattern in the chocolate. Then I got my hands on a thermal camera like yours, and I heated up sheets of paper (instead of chocolate) and different heights in the oven (naturally without the rotation plate) and looked at the patterns. First - as you saw yourself in the video - the patterns are not exactly regular. Mine were usually even less pretty than the one you show in this video - and they changed a lot at different heights in the oven. I got suspicious of these experiments and found a paper that agrees: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0031-9120/49/4/419. They write about the c = lambda*freq method in the case of the microwave pattern: "But this is not correct. The distribution of an electric field in a 3D cavity is rather complicated and the idea of wave resonance in a one dimensional string simply cannot be applied to this case. (...)even in this very simplified case there is no observable distance between spots that are equal to 6 cm as it is predicted from the simple one dimensional model. So this method can provide only a very rough estimation of the speed of light." And that was my experience too. In the end, it seems more like a matter of luck whether or not spots that are about 6cm apart or not (I would say I even had trouble finding a single such pair!). I did this experiment in class using the pieces of paper, kind of like you did but in 2d - but made a point of explaining that the well-liked chocolate experiment couldn't reliably work, and people simply tended to see what they wanted to see. It reminded me of the episode where Lowell thought he saw an intricate canal network on the surface of Mars through his telescope! You also seem to find spots that are around 6 cm apart, and I'm just wondering about the casual comment you dropped about "looking for the spots that are closest together". Do you feel sure about that claim? After seeing the random patterns I saw myself using a thermal camera, I suspect it's impossible to know what the hot-spot separation will be, unless an exact simulation of the freq, waveguide, oven dimensions etc. is made in advance. Thoughts?

The stirrer is ONLY in ovens that do not have a rotating carousel plate. The rotating carousel design eliminated the need to the stirrer in smaller ovens. larger and commercial oven will have a stirrer and no rotating plates. For the magnetron tube to turn on you need more than just the 2Kv, you need an HV capacitor andan Hv diode. These will bring the voltage up and raise the amperage to the magnetron tube reaches resonance and start working. Also you need 6 volts for the cathode heater in the tube. This is the third winding on the MOT. Also a warning, The magnetron is made of beryllium ceramic and is VERY toxic so handle with care and do not break it.
@tachyon1132
@tachyon1132 5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same that rotating carousel plate eliminated the need of stirrer. But am also wondering how is the plate better option as compared to stirrer. One thing I could think about is energy requirement which I believe stirrer uses less. Maybe material used for making the stirrer is expensive or difficult to make. What do you think?
