What still impresses me is that (albeit reinforced) a rubber belt can spin many thousands of rpm, be under huge heat and frictional stresses, pull a load of rider 75~kg and bike 150kg~ for hundreds of thousands of miles! It's pretty shocking really
@giwtwm

i think at the pulleys the load is no more than 5-15kg because of gear reduction systems

The variator that is the aluminum part towards the front of the bike is 2 parts. Their are roller weights inside that get forced out by Centrifugal force and press the belt forcing it up to the edge of the variator. When the belt is all the way up on the aluminum variator and smaller on the clutch rear pulley it is maxed out and the bike will not go any faster once in that ratio.

The CVT mechanism used in Burgerman is not quite the same with this one. It's much more like those used in cars, with steel belts. Suzuki even call the belt used in Burgerman "life of the bike item". Surely it's exaggerated, but also kinda true as typical rubber belt only lasts like 30,000 km, while theirs typically last like 80,000 or more, just like yours did. The CVT system used in the video usually don't work well on bikes with larger displacement due to the loss of power is too high (Typically about 25% of power is loss), which leads to poor fuel economy and performance, overheating, vibration at low speed, etc.

My understanding is that many cars with CVTs work in pretty much the same way, just bigger and stronger, and probably computer controlled rather than purely mechanical. What I've always wondered is if something like this could be manually controlled by the driver, basically have a lever the driver can move to change gear ratio instead of shifting gears.
@Kendalon
@Kendalon 3 жыл бұрын
It probably could be controlled manually if you engineered it right. You would need to come up with a way to manually close the front pulley and make sure that it stays the way you want it. But you would probably want it to automatically go back to the first position when the throttle is released.
@quillmaurer6563
@quillmaurer6563 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kendalon I'd imagine a sort of Johnson-bar type arrangement, squeeze a handle to move the lever, it would lock in place to prevent unintended movement. One concern I could see would be that, sort of like a bicycle derailleur, it wouldn't be able to change ratio when not moving, so if stopped in high-ratio it might be very difficult to get moving again, a problem I'm sure everyone who's ridden a bicycle has experienced a few times. Would either need to have the clutch after rather than before the CVT device, or the driver would have to be really in the habit of moving it to low range before stopping. Though this one is automatic (as is the clutch), it can be noted that the clutch is at the wheel rather than engine, possibly for this reason.
@Kendalon
@Kendalon 3 жыл бұрын
@@quillmaurer6563 Possible fix for that issue. The lock for the manual shift would be attached to a release that is attached to the brake handle.
@quillmaurer6563
@quillmaurer6563 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kendalon Not sure what you're describing - something that would link the shift lever to the brake so you can't apply the brake without shifting to low-ratio? Unless the clutch is in, that would be like downshifting into first any time you use the brakes, could be a "money-shift" situation. Maybe we're thinking of different contexts, I'd been thinking of this for a car rather than a motor scooter.
@Kendalon
@Kendalon 3 жыл бұрын
@@quillmaurer6563 WellFrom what I understand you were describing a lock that would lock it into a specific position as you shift, correct? Well The lock would need a release on it and it could be attached to the Brake so when the brake is applied the lock would release and then the CVT would return to the starting position.

As far as I understand, the same engine speed should always map to the same gear ratio eventually. So an engine spinning at 3000 rpm will always produce x amount of force against the spring. So it will move the belt until the force of the spring is equal to the force of the variator. What I don't quite understand is why the CVT also works uphill for example. When going uphill the engine can spin at the same 3000 rpm, which should result in the same force on the spring, thus the same gear ratio, but in reality the vehicle will of course slow down.

chriss4365 centrifugal force is not real, just saying because you seem to care about your words. the existent force is called centripetal, we use the term “centrifugal force” to imagine how centripetal force really works and in some cases to find the vector or tension directed to the center of the circle. just a friendly tip.
@highze
@highze 3 жыл бұрын
@@yh1669 It is a question if you define your frame of reference as inertial or not. If you use the inertial system in a way that you sit on a point of the circle while it rotates, the vector of the centrifugal force and the centripetal force are in the same direction. Just one with a negative value, but the value is the same. So I would say, what chris said wasn't really wrong :)
@yh1669
@yh1669 3 жыл бұрын
Felix my point is that centrifugal force does not exist, it’s a reference to measure centripetal force, it’s not a real vector. as you said the difference of both measures is it’s sign, if you find the “centrifugal” force then you find the centripetal force if you change the vector direction (sign); you can also use that reference or imaginary force to measure tension and other forces. kind of like a constant after you find it. also: theres not such a force that pushes an object outside of a curve or circle, in reality the object is following newton’s first law of motion and trying to keep going in a straight line while the angle keeps changing. centripetal force is the force that keeps an object from going in a straight line and pulls the object towards the centre of the circle or curve: forces like friction and tension. Sorry mate, centrifugal force doesn’t exist, I triple checked before writing this. you are always welcome to correct me if I am wrong.

@@yh1669 god its so annoying when commenters find every single example of someone saying "centrifugal force" and feel the need to tell them why it doesn't exist. we know it doesn't exist, it's just inertia. guess what, people understand what you mean when you say "centrifugal force" so we use it because the person asking the question probably isn't an engineer and just wants a simple explanation they can understand.

I have a Question. How does it come I go faster downhill when the cvt is restricted to 52km/h. And how does more torque in a cvt lead to a higher top speed when it’s still restricted
@chriss4365
@chriss4365 Жыл бұрын
Gravity forces it to go faster. The restrictor only limits engine rpms but gravity will make it rev higher going down hill. If you want torque you will sacrifice top speed and if you want top speed you will sacrifice torque which equates to faster acceleration. so if you have more torque you will accelerate slow and have higher top speed. Like a car in its highest gear lets the engine run at very low rpms you get high speeds but very slow response and acceleration unless it down shifts. In a scooter cvt the belt starts like a small gear turning a big gear which equates to high torque to get it moving then it gradually changes to the drive being a large gear driving a small gear which allows the wheel to spin faster. Scooters have the lowest torque band at the wheel when at top speed and highest torque at low speeds.

Depends on the design, the variator might change ratios at mid rpm range preferably closer to max torque, so once it reaches max drive ratio, the remaining rpm range let's you accelerate You can play around with the control components of the variator to change at what rpm it begins to change ratio, make it harder for the cones to push the belt up and the engine revs bit faster at a lower ratio and vice versa

CVT is a tried and tested technology in both scooters and cars. Advantages in case of cars is that they are much lighter and easier to maintain than the equivalent oil filled conventional (slushbox) automatics which have huge transmission losses - effectively hampering fuel efficiency. With the possibility of infinite gear ratios the CVT versions of cars are often more fuel efficient than even the manuals of the same model, especially in city driving. Disadvantages... Step less transmission does not offer the feel of manual gear change, but now even CVTs have introduced the option of 'manual like' controls in some cars. It also doesn't really do well on off road oriented 4WD vehicles

You sure it wasn't a bad bearing those are more important than the belt. Most customers say bike stops moving and belt is usually shredded it doesn't lock the wheel that I've heard of.

@@trading9385 it wont work because you'd have to pedal really fast to engage the clutch to start moving. If you had no clutch you'd have to pedal fast all the time to keep it in a higher ratio to go faster. I'm sure it could be modified for a bicycle but as is wont work properly.

when you start a scooter you apply the brakes to start doesnt it damages the belt or anything?
@DerKaktusAvant

No because it has a centrifugal clutch
@pranavraj7806
@pranavraj7806 3 жыл бұрын
As long as you dont twist the throttle enough for the clutch to engage before releasing the brakes Also, the starter motor gets the sign to power up when the rear lamp lights up, so you don't really need to apply the brakes strongly, just enough to hit the little switch on the brake levers
