This video explains the working of a Gearless Scooter’s Transmission System with relevant animations.
Gearless scooters have automatic transmission known as Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) which enables it to automatically shift from low to high drive ratios using centrifugal systems.

go kart cvts have the drive pulley open slightly wider than the belt at idle and have a brass bushing at the center that acts as a bearing for the belt. but when the drive pulley closes it squeezes the belt, engaging the cvt. a lot of go karts also use a just a centrifugal clutch, running at one gear with no way to change them.

Really neat to see as I just had to learn all about this recently. @@holohulolo not really a larger diameter, but my understanding is the heavier rollers cause the variator to reach its highest diameter more quickly, and also to maintain it longer and at lower engine speeds. Essentially it's just staying in "high gear" more than it otherwise would

This was a great explanation of what goes on in the variator and how the clutch works, but they left out what controls the movement of the belt up and down the cones on the clutch/driven side. It looks to me like that is simply the fact that the belt is a fixed length, and as the diameter of the drive pully expands the belt tightens between the pullies, forcing the belt down further between the cones of the driven pully, forcing them apart and compressing that yellow spring you see at 2:30. It might be obvious to most people but it wasn't to me at first and I wish they would have at least mentioned it. Overall though great explanation thank you!

The real beauty of this system, when you think about it, isn't just the functional result but the sheer simplicity of it. There are so few manufactured parts compared to a conventional motorbike - I finally understand why scooters can be produced so cheaply. They must be a doddle to service too (other than belt removal and installation, which is probably a right laugh).
@planetphatness
@planetphatness 2 жыл бұрын
You change the belt about once a year, cheap belts will disintegrate though. They're super easy to work on and maintain due the the simplicity of the design. Only one drawback is you loose a lot of torque and responsiveness from the belt.
@Nawazaahr

Dude, this type of engine is more complex to make and also difficult to get it down to a size that fits in a Scooter. In general Scooters costs more than a Motorbike compared to features. Just compare the wheels of a scooter to a motorbike, Even a simple Disc brake witout ABS is sold at a premium on scooters.

Small capacity low output engines work best with CVT . Infinet gearing always uses the maximum power available. A gear box is nowhere near as power efficient. That's why at the lights the scooters leave the Porsches standing up to 30 mph. 12bhp vs 200bhp CVT works. It actually also works well in small engined cars
@loludied552
@loludied552 2 жыл бұрын
CVT is a tiny bit better than modern automatic transmissions in efficiency, not massively better since the engine needs to have some speed or revs to effectively suck air, and mix the air with fuel. The least powerful modern Porsche has over double the power to weight ratio and a more aerodynamic body as well as lots of torque down low, it’s unlikely that it will be slower than a scooter with a CVT, also the acceleration of CVTs are limited in how much grip the pulley belt has.
