Do you find yourself watching a lot of tv shows and series? Don’t worry so do I, not only I but most of the internet. If you think about tv shows and movies that have gotten a lot of recognition and popularity in recent years then most of those were probably shows you found or atleast received a lot of recognition online. However one show recently did this to an unexpectedly impressive level and that was a japanese anime by the name of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.

I hope that the manga will have a good ending and that someday the source material will be fully adapted by the same team. The director of Bocchi the rock did a great job this time too. Rings of power has a huge budget but it doesn't even get close to the quality of Frieren.
@Airwave2k2

Taking this abomination of JRRs work as reference point is plain wrong. This ring of power junk is nothing to talk about nor compare it against something great like Frieren. I don't compare Sharknado II to Jaws either. Yes to a good ending and a full adaptation with these people who worked on it right now and many more talents. But yeah that has nothing to do with this trash.

@@Airwave2k2that “trash” (I do agree with such a term for it) is the latest big fantasy thing Hollywood and traditionally the most successful media have put out. Just goes to show that a lot of American institutions are cracking and faltering as a direct result of ideology and philosophy and that Japanese media, for example, is quickly filling up any vacuum and also forcing its way into the Western mainstream more and more.

The reason Frieren connects to us is: 1. It is a personification of teenager life where much of it we thought it is going to be forever. mom, dad, friends, laughter, etc. We thought it is going to be forever just like Frieren has a thousands years old. We also most of the time feel apathy on those precious moment. 2. It pictures well the sadness of time to separate ways. 3. It is our feeling when everything has been in the past and we can't go back to retrieve it again 4. It appreciates the mundane life and live in the moment

It's amazing how people forget how fast pace freieren actually is sometimes. Months and years go by without the viewers noticing because we are viewing the story in freieren's perspective. Although in the later episodes, the story did slowed down because freieren kinda learned how humans perceive time through fern and stark and started to actually "live by the moment".
@papacharlie-niner148

I understand why people often describe the series as slow-paced, but it's not. So much narrative is packed into every episode, without even considering how much in-world time is also covered. I think the slow-paced impression is because the story beats aren't progressed by action scenes, those only come once every three or four episodes, at least at first. Action scenes come more frequently later. But there is also less dialog to carry the story. So if the pace isn't being driven by action or dialog, it comes across as slow-paced. But the reason I think the pace is not slow but rather perfect, is because of how frequent emotional scenes and self-discoveries are! After all, Frieren is on this journey to understand short-lived humans better. So each time she makes a discovery, the pace progresses. Also, a lot of the narrative is told through visual storytelling. There is a lot of screen time where no one says a word, but so much happens! Another reviewer pointed out that landscape backgrounds are done in almost an impressionistic style. The visuals hammer home the point that the world, for the most part, is at peace. Thanks to the OG Hero's success.

I was unsurprised it became the #1 anime of the season and possibly even the year. The source material is amazing, and it feels like a breath of fresh air for the genre, which attracted the A-team of animators and a fantastic director. The strong source material, its popularity in Japan, the fact the opening episode's (which is the most important one for determining how successful it will be) source material is especially strong, and the rockstar team of animators all gave the studio a ton of confidence in it, which is how it got a generous budget and two cours. I think the only real surprise is how great the soundtrack is, and how consistent the team has been (I was expecting at least one pacing issue and slow episode from just trying to adapt chapters into half hour episodes, but I can't think of a single episode that disappointed).

That scene where she starts crying at Himmel's funeral ALWAYS gets me, no matter how many times I see it. Who HASN'T had someone they knew for a bit suddenly leave their life? Maybe they moved away, maybe they changed schools, maybe they passed. That feeling of regret has a particularly strong pain to it. That was someone you may never see again. It hurts, even if you only talked to them occasionally.

This times a hundred if you happen to have ADHD. Time is something I waste way too much time thinking about, and I even have an RP character that was basically intended to eventually become "a Frieren". The reason I mentioned ADHD specifically is that it can actively distort one's perception of time, which is why it's sometimes outright called "time blindness". Months passing in the blink of an eye really can be how it feels sometimes, despite having a total lifespan no greater than anyone else. I didn't watch Frieren because people said it was good. I watched Frieren because it felt _targeted._

@@angeldude101 I was never diagnosed with ADHD, I checked on several occasions. But I can so relate to you. My last 5 years have gone by in the blink of an eye. And I haven’t learned anything new, or made anymore friends, more like lost some. Really gotta hustle to make up for lost time. But I feel like if I take this seriously, another 5 years will go by with me doing random shit thinking it’s helping. Lol So I’m learning to accept the fact that human life is not that much longer than a mayfly’s. At least in its perception perhaps. If you accept my poetic metaphor.

@@pumpkingamebox Ironically, I've pretty much taken the exact opposite lesson and to not worry as much about "wasting time". I may not have much to show for it, but it's a far cry to say that I've learned or gained nothing. It's just been much slower than what modern hustle-culture typically demands of people. I see Frieren's various mundane and unflashy spells as very much the same kind of thing as what I like to spend my time on. They may be "useless", but that doesn't mean they're worthless.

Frieren is one of the most beautiful stories I have seen in an Anime. I enjoy the slower, slice of life (in a fantasy setting) kind of stories. This and Reincarnation of a Bookworm easily ranks as some of my absolute peak level anime. Maybe it is because I am just older than I used to be and savor everything in between the action scenes. Then again I also enjoyed the calmer moments back when Naruto aired in the early 00's as well so I don't think it is an age thing for me.

in comparison to Amazons Lord of the Prime, Frieren is well written without agendas (No LGBTQ+Pedos unless you count the demons, no black elves). Yes there are powerful women but they don't go about crying about how they're oppressed. Take for example how Galadriel behaves w/ guards and the royals to how Frieren allows herself to be restrained/jailed... The action and choreography is also much better directed in the anime though often times the episode may have very little

Just watched Frieren recently this year. I tend to not watch popular Anime on its hyped year, So Im a little late. I did not expect to really like it and Im on it now looking forward every week. The only reason why I watched it till the latest episode among other titles because i felt an LOTR feel in it while watching the first episode. I felt Home. I have deep Love for the LOTR series. When I watched LOTR way back in its Premiere days, I had this gut feel that it will be timeless. I have the same feeling with Frieren.

Excellent review. I knew the story from the ENG Manga long before the Anime. While I enjoyed the story and thought this might be a work of genius by the author Kanehito Yamada, it is the production quality that Madhouse and Evan Call bring to the Anime, that really puts it in orbit. Anytime an Anime can make you feel in Episode 1 for characters whom you know nothing about, well that is genius on the screen.

Highly popular manga turning into a popular anime is really unexpected? For every wild card like Demon Slayer there’s a Frieren, Spy x Family or One Punch Man; huge source materials that would perform well as long as the animation isn’t dog shit. If anything is surprising is how wild spread popular titles get, the scale of discourse online only goes to show how mainstream anime got in the past years.
