How a Somali Refugee Is Creating Community in Minnesota

Hudda Ibrahim and her family fled civil war in Somalia for a new life in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She soon discovered that her neighbors were curious about Somali culture, but many were afraid to ask questions. Instead of falling to assumptions and misconceptions, Hudda wanted to encourage a community based on conversation. She started Dine and Dialogue-a program that invited her neighbors to ask questions and get to know each other, all over a home-cooked meal. From hijabs to Sharia law, no subject is off the table. Today, she continues to host this open forum every month, bridging the gap between people and finding a path to compassion through the stomach.

She came to the US at 19! I know many people who immigrated here at her age and after many years, still struggle to grasp the language and the culture. She was able to understand American culture very quickly and preserve her own culture whilst doing so. That’s impressive! She assimilated while contributing to the cultural diversity of her new country.

Beautiful waters awesome culture and great agricultural and Architectural themes. Then after they were forced out of Somalia a dictator had a tight regime to shape back Somalia by dividing jobs into states. Trying to revive the culture. We were always Muslim since the late 14 hundreds. Then a tribe felt left out but they weren’t and they overthrew the dictator and pushed out the northern Somali tribe out of somalia. They did nothing to fix Somalia. The us blindly helped them but they were on the wrong side, the us helped the rebels and it ruined Somalia. 13 years of no government equals rebels and terrorist groups battle ground. People like you who are uneducated and have no idea what their speaking on but just spew ignorance is sad really. Learn a thing or two bout the Somali people and put yourself in our shoes.

MN native here. Really wanted to dislike this, watched all of it and decided not too because I know there are good Somali people out there and good for them for being good people and it seams like they are. I'm still weary of this ethnic group in Minneapolis and other towns because in reality, there a serious problem.

@@8skin It has nothing to do with ethnicity. The problems you get are when people from war-torn countries come to another country and gets placed with other people from war-torn countries. What happens then are that people who are "used" to war, terrorism and criminality live together those kind of things continue, but when they move in to neighborhoods that are peaceful, they almost instantly become a part of that society.

I don't understand why we should adapt to their culture. They should be adapting to ours, they were able to move to America for free afterall. Most people from 1st world countries are given such strict rules about immigrating to the US, and they were able to bypass all of that because their culture is so barbaric and aggressive that they have ruined their own countries. They wouldn't allow us to bring our western culture to Somalia, so why should we be so soft? I'm sure these individuals are nice and decent, but their culture and religion is not always.

YET even if I wanted to just VISIT the US, they'd literally take 3 months or more of my life just determining whether the papers I submit are good or not. All the certificates, long and tedious processes, paperwork and god knows what else.. As a rich man, I may even be denied the entry to the US even though my criminal record is completely blank and perfect. Yet these people entered the US to not visit but live forever for free? I dislike the thought of that. and yes they are the ones to adapt to YOUR culture, not the other way around. Sad to see this video to be honest.
