How a Sovereign Group in Jamaica Is Fighting a US Mining Company

Jamaica was once the world’s leading exporter of bauxite, which is the ore from which aluminum is made, but decades of mining have taken a toll on the land and the people. With reserves depleted, the government is now pushing to move mining operations into the most ecologically sensitive part of the island known as Cockpit Country. The people of Cockpit Country fought off the British in the 1700s and now they're conjuring the warrior spirit of their ancestors to take that fight to the mining companies.

Funny anomaly is a lot you are mixed the people of Turtle Island indigenous people ...has well as many others ...on a positive note I hope the government sees reason over profit to protect it's people ...the other problem is every body or a lot of the people do their own thing ...regarding paying taxes ...yes a portion do but ...how are those in power able to make a living if they cannot make money out of the minerals that come out of Jamaica ...I country that does not have an industry of such ...either the poor suffer on behalf of the rich ...or the rich live moderately so the poor can rise up ...and the latter does not happen in a capitalistic world ...or not to frequently !!!

American imperialism and political interference is part of the reason for mass migration. Democratic Reforms in many of these countries would hurt the cheap manufacturing of goods and resource extraction, so the US makes sure to install corrupt fascist puppets and these places remain dysfunctional. This is all to keep the prices of goods and commodities low for white capitalist countries. However, it seems that globalization could be undoing itself because of the Coronavirus pandemic, climate change, and resurgent nationalism in some developed countries.

@@jdblake3224 never. Up until the pandemic started the federal government and oil companies were making plans to drill off the coast of South Carolina (where I live). People were rightfully pissed. Drilling off the coast would kill costal tourism, which is a massive part of the South Carolina economy. It would taint the sea food in the area, killing two more industries. More jobs would be lost than gained, and the government and oil companies know it. But do they care? No. The only thing that stopped that project was the pandemic and the economic slow down that came with it.

But looking at it sabotaging their equipment is an idea but these people are so wealthy that it wouldn't even budge them also their grounds are heavily secured so it's not easy to get in, we need some inside men to do the damages their. The crazy part the Prime Minister said about 2years ago that he will not mine the cockpit and put a stop to it but I knew he was lying he actually renewed their license and gave them more land once he got more comfortable in his position it's very obvious that he's greedy and doesn't care about the people. A "US mining company" mining Jamaican natural resources. Any sane "independent" government would question why they aren't mining their own natural resources. It's stuff like this that make it difficult to cover the fact that Jamaica is ruled by England (and being strangled by America). Jamaica is still under colonial rule, yet most natives think it's independent. As far as Jamaican/England law is concerned, all Jamaican minerals and natural resources are owned by the Crown. I really can't perceive a favorably turn in the mining situation until Jamaica truly gains it's sovereignty.

Wtf Why are they making new mining sites. It's literally not necessary. Not just cuz if the environmental impact but because we have so much aluminum already that needs to be recycled. I work in shipyards. They throw away so much metal. That's not including all the aluminum cans that get thrown out. And the metals the US Navy throws out.This stuff can easily be recycled and treated to whatever type of aluminum you need to use. Get a contract with these shipyards and collect their metals and process them into what you need. You can still make your money and people will still have their jobs. Stop stripping the land of resources. We have done ENOUGH!

Just watched the second video updating this issue and came back to rewatch the first. My favourite part in this one is when Howard Mitchell, whom used to chair the Jamaica Bauxite Institute, explains the unsustainability of bauxite mining and doesn't deny his role in it or the fact that "in its hay day", it seemed to be a very prosperous venture for the island's economy (starts at 30:02). I can only hope the rest of the government will develop the foresight to see that the cons of continuing bauxite will ultimately outweigh the pros - but from the second video, it seems they still have their eyes closed.

As a Jamaican living abroad, this was very informative as well as heartbreaking. Jamaica will always be my home, but as for the actual residents I feel hurt for them. They are me, they're my family, and their well-being is being jeopardized for financial gains and it's infuriating.

This is to built the economy to stop the high level of crime and violence. As a run away Jamaican, are you going to send the government money?
@ShanTFull
@ShanTFull 2 жыл бұрын
@@kirkpeters8069 😂😂😂 it's the runaway Jamaican for me. That was clever Kirk, come up with that one on your own? Not sure how water and air pollution, forestry and farmland destruction, and displaced citizenry are things that help build an economy, but I'll take your word for it, patriot. I do give the government money. Everytime I send money to my family and friends still living in Jamaica, and travel to Jamaica and from Jamaica, book hotels or rent apartments and cars and buy groceries. Are you boosting the country's tourism, patriot?

Years ago, a girlfriend and I were staying at her family's gorgeous villa on Discovery Bay. Every morning I would walk out to the backyard dock and get into the water to swim and snorkel. In a over a week of snorkeling, I saw almost no living fish in the water and many dead sanddollars. A few minutes drive away on the other side of the bay, I noticed a ship being loaded with bauxite, which by the way, was covering the entire seafloor of everywhere I snorkeled. On a separate note, on my quest through to find and buy some Blue Mountain coffee, I learned that there was none to be had if a local. as well as the wonderful fruit that grew on the island because all of it was reserved for tourism, not for the locals to buy. Fresh fruits and vegetables and Blue Mountain coffee was reserved almost exclusively to go to the many all-inclusive tourist resorts. Since my friend, a travel agent, was in Jamaica to explore these resorts, I found everything there that was not available in the local stores.
