The Garmin R10 is also a launch monitor you can use just about anywhere: at your home golf simulator setup, on the outdoor driving range, or even on the golf course. After the Carl’s Place team did a Garmin R10 accuracy test at the driving range, we realized that it’s not only small, portable and inexpensive, but pretty darn accurate as well.
Following the same format as we did for the Mevo+, SkyTrak and Uneekor EYE XO range tests, Carl’s Place Product Specialist Tim hit 20 shots each with a pitching wedge, 6 iron and driver to compare the real life carry distance to what the Garmin Golf app told us. We also kept our eye on the flight path to see how accurate it seemed compared to real life, but with all the real-world variables, we did not compare any other data.
Overall, we were impressed by the Garmin R10’s accuracy based on its price point. Although there were a few shots that were significantly off, we were pleased by the consistent close readings most of the time.

As stated in Garmin website: Using plastic, foam, or other types of limited flight golf balls can lead to inconsistent, incorrect, or no metrics being displayed by the radar. Limited flight golf balls generally will have a stripe around their center and display "Range" or "Practice." These types of balls will normally fly anywhere from 60-80 percent of the distance of a regular golf ball.

The garmin algorithms are short on distance because spin calculations are off. Try awesome golf. Their distance algorithms are almost spot on.

Great video, love the honesty,I have the R10 and use awesome golf app, I feel the R10 will put downward pressure on golf sim prices as more golfers can afford to get into using a sim. Future looks bright, I subbed so I can get more of your content Cheers

Hey! Thanks! We'd say it's decently accurate. We've found that the higher priced launch monitors are better (of course), but the Garmin R10 is a great entry level option!

Did you calibrate it? I found that after I got a leveler and found out about calibration, it worked much better. I am trying the awesome golf app next.

Great test, appreciate describing the variables. You guys planning to do the big 3 this summer you think? I mentioned before but along with your disclosure of variables, would be awesome to see the launch numbers that the monitors used to calculate the distance.

@@carlsplace that is great. Id love to see trackman tested. Everyone just assumed its the gold standard outdoors. I want to see how accurate it actually is at tracking the ball to its landing spot.

Question and sorry if I missed it below or in video.... At my golf club, their range balls are the balls purposely reduced 20% for long hitters (super close fence). Does the app have a quick toggle or setting where I can adjust the carry/dist to reflect the 20% less it's not capable of reaching? OR do you have to simply do constant math in your head? Thanks for the video - enjoyed it!!

Hi Brent, Glad you enjoyed the video! We do not know of any setting to change for when you're using range balls, but we've read in other forums that using Awesome Golf software has proven to be super accurate, even with using range balls. We have not tested it, but we are curious!

Sadly it does not, the best work around I have found is to use E6 connect, that lets you compensate using the elevation setting

Can y’all do this test again I had the problem were the garmin was reading low on the garmin app try awesome golf and that fixed it for me.

those of set distance can be just due of garmin alingment

Problem is you have “Range Balls” mixed in with regular balls. Almost all balls marked as “Range” or “Practice” are designed to go shorter distances. This is probably a main reason for the inconstancy. It even says in the user manual for the R10 to not use those kind of balls because it will not produce consistent results.

I learned from a highly ranked club fitter that compared to regular balls well-worn range balls fly farther using wedges and much shorter on driver/woods/long irons. This is due to the dimples being worn down reducing the spin.

I have the R10 and the difference between a range ball reading and a regular ball is considerable. 15-20 yards on mid-irons and up to 30 yards on a drive over 225. The wedges are a lot closer due to the lack of spin. The strange thing about the R10 is that their driving range software is the least accurate when compared to the E6 and Awesome golf software that is also included.

The "home/budget" launch monitors aren't great at reading accurate spin level. Depending on how you strike it (especially wedges) the spin levels alone can change the carry distance by 10 yards + And no offence but your swing isn't great you are pulling right across the ball which is why you get big fades and little low grubby draws which means the spin variation on your swing is going to make an accurate spin reading very difficult. (Hey i have issues with my swing too I'm just saying that you gave that monitor alot of work to do.

Appreciate the feedback! We totally agree. But aren't a lot of the users of these launch monitors similar to us? Heck, if we had a perfect swing, we would have been at The Open last week :D We're just trying to relate to the "average" golfer!

@@carlsplace yes that's very true all these machines are limited by our swings as well as their technology but my point is that you can find a better level of accuracy by deleting the shots you hit poorly. You know when you hit an iron thin or slice it badly that these all affect those average distances. At the same time you also know when you hit a good shot. So if you take the time to go through every club in your bag hitting 50 or even 100 shots with each club (not all in one day but 1 club per day)...then out of your 100 shots you know that maybe 15-20 you can drop out as they were bad shots...then hopefully you know 20-30 you hit well and then the rest are all in between. Doing it this way you know how far you hit it when you strike it really well....how far you hit it on average and you just rule out the bad shots because if you hit it badly there's no useful information from those shots. After you do this that monitor then becomes more useful to you to work on your swing and get more accurate numbers. That's a bit of a long explanation but to sum up you dial that monitor into your swing and work from there. Yes the $30,000 are alot more accurate but you can gain useful info from that device.

Stick to formula of testing average golfers using real world equipment. You getting more carry than the radar because your on a hill, 5-10% can be fair here, if you had a camera based unit it would be the same. My practice area is up hill 15%. SO my 250 yard drives get plugged at 200 yards

I think that you set up the R10 too close to the ball.

Hi Scott! Thanks for the comment. It must be an optical illusion based on the angle of the camera because we made sure to place it within the 6-8' range that Garmin recommends!
