We talked to Remedy about the movies and TV shows that inspired Alan Wake 2 and their survival horror games. Remedy has long been a studio that wears its influences on its sleeve. From the hard-boiled police files of Max Payne to the New Weird foundations of Control, movies, TV shows, and books have long served as inspiration. This is no different in Alan Wake 2, which blends horror and detective fiction in creatively unsettling ways. We talked to Remedy to find out why these genres work so well together, discuss some of the game’s cultural touchstones, and how they bleed their way into the survival horror story, characters, and gameplay.

So Saga works with Alex Casey who is a fictional character in the books wake previously wrote “the departure” and others. The big question for me is, were these characters written into existence or are they just part of a story 🤔

In AW1 even alan wake thinks his existence was manifested thru the powers of caldron lake. There are hints that Tom the diver manifested AW and AW probably manifested Saga and Casey... It's like an onion... you just keep peeling back the layers.

In AWE, you read some documents about some mysterious FBI agent named Alex Casey that nobody can find any records of that’s been investigating the Bright Falls case, so from an outside perspective, this guy just randomly showed up and started gumshoe-ing.

My theory is that FBI agent Alex Casey is a normal real person. Alan talks about how he takes a lot of inspiration from his dreams, especially in his early years as a writer. So at some point Alan started having dreams about Alex Casey and took inspiration from him without realizing. So now real Alex Casey is in Bright Falls with Saga, meanwhile Alex Casey that Alan wrote manifested in the Dark Place. Perhaps he will be an enemy. Wanting to take revenge from Alan for killing him.

This game really oozes carefull consideration and seeing how the dev team got inspired. Really great stuff. It's not even about if it all lands perfectly. But just the fact they are going about it all this way cements that the game is less a product and more so a work passion/art. Which is never ever a bad thing!

That's something that was in the lore from the first game. If you look at the TV segments in Alan wake 1. James McCaffrey (voice of max payne) is the voice of Casey. There is a talk show segment where they interview Sam lake (as himself) as the "face" of Alex Casey.

@martingarciaarvidson6684 also cause Sam lake was the face of max in the original max payne game. Alex Casey is max payne in everything but name. The name also comes from max payne lore, max has a friend named Alex and there is a beer named Casey. In Alan wake 2, Alan switches roles with Casey and becomes the detective, when he is hurt, he uses painkillers to heal. This is what max uses to heal too. It's all connected.

Sam Lake is literaly on the screen as Alex Casey. As he was Max Payne on the first Max Payne game. And he’s the one who usually announces Remedy’s games and gets interviewed the most. So, he’s definitely not in the background, etc.

Apple advertise it with theyre metal upscaling and its pretty obvious that re4 on iphone 15 pro demo that it runs on the lowest setting with 360p resolution and 30fps. Most consoles and gpu can run re4 at 60 so playing alan wake 2 on iphone 15 pro is very unlikely. Ps4 games are likely though

well, Sam Lake has been very upfront about: stephen king, twilight zone, twin peaks, a Lynch's work in general, actually. He also mentioned Se7en, Taxi Driver, and True Detectove S01. No mention of the other things you typed. But ofc, the influence of these things vary. most just influence the vibe and tone of the game. some are taken for visual elements (he mentioned taxi driver for a lot of the look of the Dark Place New York in the game). Some are taken for some story elements (twin peaks).
