Ray Hewitt, the owner of Soda City Restorations, restores and replaces vintage soda machines. It takes about 60 hours of work to complete and involves disassembling, painting, and reassembling the machine. The resale value of the Coca-Cola Vendo 44 is about $8,000.

The biggest issue would be eyes and breathing so they would use a respirator mask and safety goggles. Everybody else stays out of the way so no one accidently gets blasted. When he bends down to get the lower portion you can see they are using full face protection. It's also done outside so no issue with ventilation. Looks like they are very careful to do this safely.

Most collectors, who pay top dollar, want a machine FULLY restored to like new condition. They want the machine to look like it just stepped out of that time period, not with all the wear and tear on it. However there are special cases where people prefer the machine to show its true age! Everyone has their own taste:)

I found an old metal Dr Pepper sign in my Grandfather's old roadside shop. It was just sitting there just nailed up on the wall, unnoticed by old tenants and then by squatters for years. Even my dad didn't notice it til I pulled it off the wall. It still has its beautiful red color and virtually no rust. I wouldn't do a thing to fix it's imperfections. It's vintage look is part of it's charm.

I like vintage stuff but I couldn't watch most of what Rick was doing. I'd rather he clear coat the flaws than strip & paint. The most egregious was the horse racing gambling wheel. Stripped, repainted & then added new cutouts of horses that didn't exist on the original. It was a completely different item & somebody had to pay thousands for the "restoration."

@@hastyraccoon7458 with that logic you can make a 1 to 1 replica of design from scratch/new materials and call it restoration. But it wouldn't make it original. If it were then what would be the point of ever restoring anything if you just recreate it using the original blueprints ? Having a machine what was created and assembled 70y ago and stood the test of time is like having piece of history. Having something that recreates the original look is like staring at photograph of that piece of history.

I was born in '60, and so most of the machines from the forties and fifties were still around, mostly at gas stations. I loved the open the door and the bottle on rollers machine. Also, the one with the bottle or can dropping and you opened the door to get it. When they started putting cans in machines (and you still had bottles in machines all the through the '70's), it was ok because it was still made with Sugar and the cans were strong, made of a steel strength aluminum or a combination and the cans had a WELD. You could not crush these cans. They got SO COLD. When they changed to flimsy aluminum, the taste was also affected. Plastic? I don't think so. But I remember bottles for 15 cents in a machine (10 oz.) and in a store you could get a king Size bottle of Coke for a quarter. When the machines started charging a quarter we thought the world was ending!! Then in the mid '80's it was 50 cents and blah blah. Great video!!
