Extremely Rusty 1940's Coca-Cola 6-pack Restoration

I will restore this Coca-Cola 6 pack. It's very rusty and it's missing the handle It's likely made during WWII because, usually these are made of aluminum but during the war aluminum was used for planes etc. and materials for these were changed to steel.
I decided to not use laser for rust removal this time, simply because I didn't want to miss opportunity to restore Coca-Cola item with Coke. I used sugar free version to avoind averything getting sticky. After 5 days in Coca-Cola lot of rust had fallen off and teh rest came off with metal brush easily., without any tretment it will take ages to get rust off with only a wire brush.
After removing rust, I bent the metal to it's original shape from the areas it had some damage. Rust had also damaged teh metal and caused a lot of pittin and even holes. I used filler to get rid of most of those adn sanded evertything down. For the paint I used first a base coat. I usually use filler base coat which is a little thicker than regular and can hide small imperfections or can be sanded down like filler. On toip of that I used RAL 9001 colored paint. Once the paint was properly dried I painted the Coca-Cola logo red with a brush. Next I clear coated the carrier with 2K (2 component) clear coat. It's much more glossy and durable than regular spray paint and it will protect the layers of paint underneath.
The carrier was also missing the handle. I searched some pictures what teh handles had looken like. I took a piece of beech wood and turned it into the correct shape on a lathe. The metal part of teh handle was made from 4mm aluminum rod. I made a custom jig to help me bend it to teh correct shape. After this I taped the wood part and painted the rod. like I hard done with the body. The wooden handle was finished with lacquer.
I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it. Thanks for watching!

If what he said about the switch from aluminum to steel during the war is true, that’s not surprising. Most of these cases were probably scrapped for the war effort. Certain metals were in such short supply and high demand that American pennies minted in 1943 were actually made of steel rather than copper.

For flattening sheet metal parts, like the bottom of the carrier, my grandpa who was a smith, suggested using a wooden mallet as it only modifies tha shape of the metal not the structure. Metal hammer may flatten the material thinner causin additional deformation.

@@edwinsalisbury83 I've tasted the Mexican Coke and the Coke made by my local bottler and they _are_ different. Compared to glucose, fructose is passively absorbed further down the small intestine and doesn’t stimulate insulin secretion. Insulin-mediated glucose uptake and metabolism in adipose tissue play a key regulatory role in leptin concentrations. With fructose, leptin can’t do its job of helping you feel full...so you buy/eat/drink more. That's a win for Big Food and a loss for you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, ODD TINKERING!!!!! :D What a way to celebrate the new year; by restoring a steel Coca-Cola 6-pack from the 1940's that was used during World War II! I loved that you actually used the Coca-Cola itself in order to eat away (most of) the rust due to the acid made in the product! Restoring a Coca-Cola item with Coca-Cola, I love it (makes me want a bottle--or can--of Coca-Cola myself)! XD Nice to see that Ducktor got swim in that bubbly goodness too! Fantastic restoration once again! :) It'll be just a few more weeks before the 1-year anniversary of me watching your videos with the Nintendo 64--my favorite video game home console growing up (with the Game Boy Color being my favorite handheld console growing up)--restoration video! ^^ I look forward to what you'll restore throughout the new year! Amazing restoration once again! Keep up the incredible work! Cheers!

Why would you drill the handle by hand when you even have a woodworking lathe that allows you to drill with much higher precision?

I use diluted hydrofluoric acid, sold under the brand name "Whink" that is intended for removing rust stains from fabric. It will instantly remove rust from chrome.

I first discovered Whink in 1966. It was in stock at the hardware store where i worked. I didn't understand at first how dangerous it could be. This is diluted hydrofluoric acid. It will etch glass if not rinsed off right away. Be careful when using on porcelain, as it is also a form of glass. Concentrated hydrofluoric acid is the only chemical that will actually DISSOLVE glass. The much diluted form of this acid in Whink can still be dangerous ! ! I once applied it to some rust freckles using a cotton ball, without using any hand protection. I didn't feel anything at first, but a while later, it felt like my fingernails were coming off ! ! Do not breathe the fumes, or get the fumes into your eyes. Hydrofluoric gas will combine with body moisture to produce the acid in you ! ! All this being said, it works like a miracle, and removes stains when nothing else will.

What people fail to realize it's that the coke doesn't just sit in your body, and stomach acid is WAY more corrosive than coke could ever hope to be. I don't like coke, but I've seen enough misinformation spread on the internet to not say anything.
