How an electric water heater works. I go over all of the electric water heater parts, what they do, and how the whole heater functions. I explain the water supply lines, pressure relief valve, thermostats, heating element, dip tube, drain valve and all of the rest. Thank you for the explanation on the workings of a water heater, this is a video all homeowners should view. I’m from California and have been in so many earthquakes I lost count but two stand out as memorable for me, the 1987 Whittier Narrows quake 5.9 magnitude. I lived in Whittier and was standing, getting ready for work and when the quake came up from the ground and felt like a giant sledgehammer was pounding the floor beneath my feet. Next came the shaking which made the walls of my house look like it was made of jello. The energy that quake released was unforgettable. 2nd quake was the 1994 Northridge quake, 6.7 magnitude, about 48 miles from Whittier where I lived. This quake was about 20 seconds of intense shaking up and down AND side to side that separated a major beam in the house that literally allowed me to see daylight through the wall. My small stereo on a shelf unit was completely turned around and facing the wall afterwards, yet never fell off the shelf. Nowadays we’re like your neighbors and barely pause to acknowledge anything less than a 5 magnitude 😏

Well thought out video, and thanks. I'm just getting into how a water heater works as to its wiring and switching. Again, thank you, I was unaware that the top element came on first, so that explains a lot of things when I am doing switching continuity checks. It seems that the top themostat is the boss and when it is satisfied it opens the switch to the top element, and at the same time closes the power switch to the e bottom themostat, which then engages the bottom element. So the top themostat operates also as an A B switch, or a Flip/Flop switch. Keep up the good work, and by the way "Great Video Voice." FR

Great video explaining how a water heater works! I've been wondering for a while what happens inside the water heater when I turn on the hot water tap; the intake cold water coming in at the bottom while the hot water goes out at the top makes a lot of sense. Thanks again!

Great video. Concise and educational. And I have been in an earthquake that was about 8.0. dishes fell, pictures came off the wall, bookshelves fell, roads broke apart, cars fell, basically a great time. Interestingly, you can have a low riktor scale count quake near you that will do more damage than a strong one fast away.

My AO Smith 50 Gal water heater is only a few months old. When we installed it the power was turned in before it was filled with water. I replaced the top element which was burned up. I ohmed out both elements and are about 13 ohms. The temp is set at 123 on both regulators. With nobody using any hot water in the previous 48 hours. When we try to fill up our top we run out of hot water ( maybe 25 gal tub) when it is about 1/3 full. Any suggestions on why this is the case would be appreciated. Excellent!! Videos . Thank you!

this was a very easy to understand explanation. thank you. i do have a question. i just had a new water heater installed a week ago. yesterday while showering, i noticed i ran out of hot water midway. and it seems like hot water takes a while to get to my taps. im guessing something is wrong with the heating elements? everything worked fine for the first few days we had the water heater. but all of a sudden, something is of. any idea what could have happened?

I would recommend to have a shutoff valve on both cold and hot line . In case of maintenance it will be helpful. Moreover you may check the incoming water quality and the pipe material . The copper pipe could replaced with PPR to avoid the corrosion and dielectric effect

You don't need a shutoff on the hot side if the cold is off. The pressure on the cold side is what pushes the hot water out. Also, it would be pretty dangerous of the hot side was turned off while the tank was still on.
