Despite his lack of strength, speed, and agility, and incredibly unassuming look - Matt Le Tissier was one of the most technically skilled players that English football has ever seen. He was also not un athletic. He was quick on the sprint and was not slow as you claim, and had amazing dribbling abilities Which require great balance and agility to pull off. So he was not un athletic The goals he scored require great athleticism. What he was accused of was being lazy when playing for England as he was not a ball winner. He was called a luxury player. It's the English Channel, but apart from that what an absolutely Top Drawer video!!! How he never went to the 1998 World Cup represents the absoulute condemnation of Glenn Hoddle and his leadership. Ironically, Glenn Hoddle progressed the England team, but he left out the players that were most like him!!! And if he included the likes of Le Tissier and Gascoigne then maybe English football history would have been different!!! So Much Love To Le Tissier!!! what a bs... if he was underrated, why would chelsea pay so much for him...? it was his choice to stay in southhampton... point... he could be a bigger star, if he wanted it.... but he dont... but that dont mean underrated... not everybody need millions to be happy... some are happy to play with friends and in the club they love.... and i bet all i have, he had ever enough money to eat and to heat his home...

Not only an incredible player but he had a heart of gold as well. I remember someone asking for his autograph to give to his dad who was in hospital and was a great fan so Le Tiss went with him to the hospital to surprise him. How many footballers would do that? 👏🏻👏🏻

I met le Tisser once and asked him if he had any regrets from football, thinking he'd say not joining a big side, he said that one missed penalty that Mark Crossley saved he was ashamed for missing one.

At least on the defensive end, I'd assert Shay Given kept Newcastle grounded, he went to Manchester City then they got relegated. Even an announcer said "score remains Liverpool 0 Shay Given 0" when he was playing Torres, Gerrard, etc.

My dad used to work at the Dell (Saints old stadium) and he became really good friends with him. After my dad left, 15 years past where they never saw each other again. He came into Toys R Us where I worked at the time and said "Your *my dads names* boy aren't you?" bare in mind I'd met him once when I was 6. I said "Yeah how did you know?" and he said "You're the spitting image of him". We then spoke for about 45 mins and I told him how my dad had to retire early due to a massive stroke and he then asked for his number. I didn't get in trouble for talking to him so long as being in Southampton, everyone of my managers was star struck and too scared to interrupt us. 11 years on and he and my dad still meet up once a month and call each other every other day! Ask anyone in Southampton and you'd understand why we hold him in such high esteem. I know I do, and I'm not a Saints fan!

I remember xavi saying that whilst he was at La Masia they all use to crowd round the tv to watch motd and they would see Le Tissier score bangers every game and were left amazed at how good he was. Xavi also was surprised he didn't play for a bigger team. But yh the guy scored bangers but it wasn't just the bangers, it was how nonchanantly he did it. Fantastic player

Very true. I grew up watching his goals. Some amazing volleys and I think the commentators on sky would always say “they show his goals in Brazil you know?!” To give that extra cred. Always hurt me that he couldn’t start for England. I think it was in an era where England didn’t appreciate these kind of qualities. Have to also say. I know he’s been effectively “cancelled” but to me he’s a great guy.

Le Tissier is by far the most overlooked player in English footbal and one of my favorite players of all time. He had class, technique, skills and an exquisite touch for a finisher lethal move on each goal, free kick or penalty. Simply, brilliant.

I remember a night match , Man City were playing Southampton at Maine Rd . LeTissier was about 18 , I'd never heard of him . He ripped us to pieces. It was probably the best performance I've ever seen live . What a player . He might be underrated, but not by me .

At the time there was the question about how a team needed to be built around him. They shoehorned him in a few times at left wing but he was never made the crux of the team. He was every fans choice but not the managers. When Glen Hoddle became manager there was a consensus he would become more central b/c they were similar players but it never really happened.

I'm from Southampton, was a season ticket-holder at the Dell throughout Matt's career and yes, he was an absolute genius. I'm pretty sure Platini and even Pele said if he was Brazillian, he'd be in the national team all the time so it's criminal that he didn't get much of a chance for England.

I think for Le Tissier, the best example of that was Glenn Hoddle, he absolutely idolised him as a kid and knowing that Hoddle suffered from the same thing, you'd think he'd realise Le Tiss's talent but of course, Hoddle was very....well....Hoddle.

I saw many of those goals at The Dell. What a player. That little ground was viscerally atmospheric on a rainy midweek night under floodlights and then Matt would break from midfield and score a brilliant goal. A man of real principle who know's where he stands and keeps to those principles

Thanks for this Matt Le Tissier tribute. Although he chose to stay at a small club and miss out on honours he was admired by all football fans at the time. His loyalty to a humble club contributed to his cult hero status. It's important to say that everyone acknowledged his brilliance in the 90s.

Maybe Gazza was just a tad tiny little bit more inconsistent than Le Tessier but Beckham absolutely SOILED himself in WC98 with that tackle and the freaking media instantly forgave him because he was cute while Gazza missed that PK on 96 and he was crucified. Why because neither he nor Matt were good looking so the press treated them unfairly every single freaking game of their entire lives. I hate them, specially The Sun.

Whoa, no one talks about Matt Le Tissier, but i can think of only a handful of players who can consistently hit those volleyes, with their first touch. His control, and composure as he gets closer to the goal is insane. Zidane might have been the greatest midfielder no doubt, but even he did not have Le Tissier's clinical finishing. As a midfielder, that is some different class. We can always trust Raymar to either remind us of a forgotten legend, or introduce us to a new one. Amazing video about a truly phenomenal player.

Le Tiss was world class to me, his compusure as you say was amazing, He was so balanced on the ball and could shoot with either foot. The mark of a genius player is one who seems to have all the time in the world on the ball and Gazza plus Le Tiss had that in droves.

@@RaymarFootball Not possible, Guernsey is close to France but the vast majority of Guernsey folk don't have French heritage for quite a few generations - Le Tissier is very much a Guernsey name and his family would be from Guernsey and not France He qualified for England because Guernsey's FA sits underneath the English FA

I played against him, I'm also from Guernsey and the same age, he played foe la mare de cateret, they smashed everyone 15, 16-0, I was our goalkeeper and they beat us 8-0, I was very happy with that, he was a freak of nature, incredibly talented footballer.

So in Guernsey there are French surnames everywhere from the history of the island, meaning that he got the name 'Le God' because of the French roots. Guernsey is apparently part of England and also speak English so he is sort of an 'English kid'

One of top five English footballers ever in terms of technique, ball control and shot, without exaggeration! Not playing for the national team was a tragedy and it explains a lot why England failed to win anything in the 90s and 00s. He wasn't underrated at the time. Back in the 90s, he was a fan favourite no matter what club you supported. It was just a case that Matt played for Southampton and told everyone else to get stuffed, and you had to love him for it even more. He was like a ballet dancer, moving in slow motion.

@@RaymarFootball no, not under appreciated either 😅 not trying to be negative or an ass about this, but people throw this term of underrated and under appreciated around without really thinking about it. Matt was neither. He’s a legend and still to this day, other legends mention him in with more mainstream legends. Not being more mainstream or exposed via major clubs doesn’t make you underrated or under appreciated. No need to even label him that way. What you’ve done is added to his exposure and widened the audience awareness. One of my favourite players was mentioned by Maradona himself as better than him… and yet practically everyone I mention him to never heard of him. Can’t say he’s under appreciated or under rated when Maradona once said the dude was better than he was… hope you understand this is written constructively and not a personal criticism towards you.

I was a season ticket holder at Southampton for all most of Matt Le Tiss career. He was the best player I've ever seen. England should have built a team around him and they would have won titles. Sadly the England Managers at the time had grudges against him for not signing for them when they managed league clubs.

Unbelievably skilful player was Matt Le Tissier. I grew up watching him (as a Spurs' fan) and people forget how good he was with both feet. Predominantly right-footed but he had a fantastic left foot as well. He was an entertainer. An absolutely fantastic player and sporting legend.

I'm a Saints fan, so obv. not dissing them - but you have to remember that he did this in a team that was at best mid table in the prem. He also single handedly kept them up a few seasons. Also, fitting that he scored the last goal at The Dell in the dying minutes of the game to beat Arsenal 3-2.

Mark Crossley came to my school playing field on outreach when I was a kid. We all got to take penalties against him. Obviously all is kids were allowed to score. Then the local club first team showed up. He saved definitely 50%+, diving on rock hard local playing field. Penalty saving legend.

As an owner of his DVD, he was always one of my favourite players…..class player. When he came to our ground and scored, it was such a class strike that the home crowd gave him a standing ovation…..then got “Big nose, he’s got a f***ing big nose” to which he turned, smiled and waved to the crowd

I absolutely loved watching Matt LeTissier play football! He was so silky, and had an amazing shooting ability! Even though I'm a Celtic supporter, i still to this day have a soft spot for Southampton directly because of my admiration for LeTissier!!

Le Tissier was given a roaming role that gave him the freedom to play his own game. He was a great player and overlooked mainly because of his loyalty to Southampton which was often portrayed by the media as a lack of ambition. He certainly achieved his goal of being an entertainer and was almost always a contender for goal of the month/season.

An incredibly gifted player, but I'm not aware of any 'big' club (except maybe Chelsea?) wanting him. I wonder why? At Southampton, he had a free role, he could do as he pleased. I can't imagine Alex Ferguson saying 'do whatever you like, don't bother with tackling or defending.' At a big club he would have been expected to 'work hard/put in a shift , which he was never required to do at the Saints. (The really great players of his time (Zidane, Cantona, Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta) were not only very talenfed but worked very hard for their teams. Even had he been born French, Italian or Brazilian, he'd have won no more than a few caps. No national team would have been built around him.

hIs 98 England hat-trick was for the England B-Team against Russia, where he also hit the cross bar and post. Chris Sutton subsequently refused to play for the England B-Team when Le-Tissier didn't make the first team saying something like 'what's the point?' England are the only national team who would not play their best player, the world missed out on not seeing Matt Le Tissier destroy them. He was that good and there are plenty of stats to confirm it.

Excellent montage of Le God. As a 50 year plus supporting Tractor Boy, we had our own great midfielders albeit in the '70's/80's: workhorses - Talbot & Wark, and artists - Muhren & Thijssen. However, MLT was on another level to these Town greats .. the most gifted natural player I've ever seen.

Matt Le Tiss single handedly got me into watching football. At my first even live game, in a cup match, he scored a world class volley that doesn’t get much rotation in his goal compilations (cos it wasn’t in the Prem). We used to always arrive early for matches to watch him do shooting practice. It was worth the entrance fee in itself!

He was literally a one man team. Le God was truly a well deserved nickname for him. I used to watch him during my younger days and always kept wondering how England kept leaving him out of their squads. Criminally under-rated, under appreciated and under valued. The English, like I have said many times before, have always valued players with work ethic rather than pure talent. Such was the case with Le God. He deserved more and also deserved better. However, in the end, the chap is happy. I quite like his character. A humble yet immensely talented individual. A Saint who played for the Saints and ended up as Le God. A truly remarkable story. Even today, the English can't recognise talent. Just look at their squad. Lol.

The English National team is renown for having word class talent and then ensuring it doesn't get used. Matt Le God is one of the greatest to ever strike a ball, 6 Caps is a crime against Talent. Paul Gascoigne who was ignored and shunned for years and after joining Glasgow Rangers as no English team wanted him. His skill, determination and personality made him a legend to Rangers, the noise loud enough to force a place in the England squad, his goal against Scotland both agony and the only time I've ever applauded and England goal. If Messi was English, he'd be too small. That's the attitude of that nation and its team and why Le God is known only by the lovers of the game!

You also have to bear in mind the fact that when Le Tissier played for them Southampton were at best a mid table team and always in the lower half of the Premier league after it began in 1992. I think their best season while Le Tissier was a player was 7th in 89/90 in the old Division 1. Several times they avoided relegation by just a few points. So they were often playing in relegation dogfights, and undoubtedly Le Tissier was regularly the difference between Southampton staying in the PL or getting relegated. With a better supporting cast around him he could have been a player of Messi's stature, winning titles, European trophies and international honours. But to his eternal credit he stayed loyal to his first professional team, undoubtedly to his career's detriment.

I was lucky enough to be growing up during Le Tissier's prime as a saints fan and going to nearly all the games watching nearly all his great goals live. He really did have a aura about him on a football pitch, not just the goals and assists but his touch, his passing, his dribbling, he could beat players with ease and showed you didn't need speed to beat someone. He was a dead ball specialist, and the fans bowed to him when he would take corners. Its good he is finally getting the recognition he deserves just a little late.

Matt is one of the best to have done it in England and yes he is extremely underrated or at least not talked enough. Should have played more for England. His goal highlight package is something else.
