Propagation of Japanese Maples by Grafting - Both Red leaf and Green Leaf types.
Most Japanese Maples including the laceleaf types are grafted, in this video we look at how and when to graft a Japanese Maple including some of the problems.
Scion selection involves choosing the right grafting material.
Rootstock should be well watered for 3 - 4 weeks before grafting.
The best time to graft Japanese Maples is in summer.
You will need some grafting tape and a grafting knife as well as the grafting material and the stock to graft onto.
Time between making the cuts and attaching the scion to the rootstock needs to be around 10 - 15 seconds. The shorter the better.
You need to ensure that the grafting tape is removed at the correct time to prevent over callusing. The head and stock stump are removed later on in the process.
Grafting means that you will get an exact clone of the plant.
Grafting onto very small stock will give inferior and slower growth.
Any growth beneath the graft need to be removed.

Ron only uses grafting tape which protects the scion. Around 95% success rate and he does around 1000 each year. As for criticism, thats standard for KZfaq. Some is constructive, and we appreciate that, some is just for the sake of it.........

forgive my ignorance but what is the point of starting a new branch lower on the trunk and getting rid of a perfectly good tree above?
@kirkford7482
@kirkford7482 5 жыл бұрын
I think it is a different species of tree. Red maples grow very slow, the small tree that is being grafted on will grow faster. Also it would take about 5 years to get it to that size and only 2 years when grafting.

We are grafting different forms of Acer palmatum dissectum onto a rootstock, which is stronger and more reliable. It is also faster growing.

A large Japanese maple bear my house just had a branch break off that’s about 3cm in diameter. I cut a piece down that’s about a meter tall. Is it possible to cut a maple or something else down and graft the whole tree onto it? I really want to bring this branch that would’ve died back to life
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 6 жыл бұрын
If its a large tree, grafting is not really possible. Only young trees take well to grafting 3cm would be very difficult, however (maybe) not totally impossible. The branch that has come down would be to late to graft by now anyway, only fresh cuts will take successfully.
@Ben-lo7cy

Sorry I'm a complete noob. What happens after the graft has taken and the branches are growing? You air layer to get more trees faster? I don't understand how this is better than planting from cuttings?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 2 жыл бұрын
If you air layer these maples they will be growing on their own root stock, which is often weaker, than the stock you graft onto. But also importantly, these are weeping trees, so they are grafted onto a developed root stock stem that is at the height you want them to weep down from. For the upright trees such as Acer palmatum dissectum seiryu, it is a different matter.
@delatroy
@delatroy 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnnyAGardening from a production perspective, what’s the speed advantage of grafting? Will the scions grow quicker if they are on stronger roots compared to cutting?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 2 жыл бұрын
@@delatroy Given you are grafting say Acer palmatum orangeola, or Hanna Matoi onto a 3ft or 6ft stem, its faster to get to the height. Most growers who graft collect Acer palmatum seeds or seedlings from the species itself, grow them on with a good straight stem and then graft at the desired height. So its quicker to get the finished product. Usually the Acer palmatum seedlings themselves are faster growing than a cutting of a selected form, SOME varieties however are fast growing themselves.
@delatroy
@delatroy 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnnyAGardening I see thanks. What do you do after the graft gets to size? Air layer it off as a distinct tree?
