Any suggestions on ways to prevent warm dry air from scorching Japanese maple leaves? I find our maples can cope with the direct Sun but the warm winds in summer do the most damage. I am thinking about planting some bamboo or other plants to improve the micro climate around the maples and provide some shelter. Thanks for the tips👍

The best thing is to keep them watered so the leaves don't dry out. But too much water could lead to root issues. It would be a balancing act for sure.

It's a 7 gal Fireglow. I plan to grow it in afternoon sun. I can water with the rest of my drip or I can hand-water periodically, so I do not see the logic of waiting until cold weater.

Sadly mine are planted on south-west wall :D But so far so good, if needed i'll protect with a sail or something on hot days. The other wall would be with 0 sun, My Osakazuki is a on the south-west side so a bit more protected, but that spot is small can't put to many there and only sun on longest days of year (unless higher grown already). It's rained an insane amount in Belgium last winter, so i'm a bit scared for root rot. Lets hope a warm drying season in spring comes soon. Acer Japonicum Aconitifolium (doing great, oldest one i have yet). Acer palmatum Skeeters's broom (Bloodgood way to big, neighbours would protest against 5-10 meter high tree) Acer palmatum Orange dream (just lovely colours, and green bark when young. Acer palmatum Osakazuki. (This one i might trim if it comes big but i really like it). The specimen has a 6 stem multi split, so my hope is, it needs more energy to get big :D Now eyeing Acer Shirasawanum Moonrise, and perhaps some lace leaf that remains smalll, and also Komachi Kiyohime.

I don't really like the very dissected leaves, prefer the regular maple leaf. It's to provide shade for my office/AUD. Full sun. Would you be able to recommend a couple species? varieties? Bloodgood tends to do well in heat. Also, Emperor one which looks similar to bloodgood. If you want a lace leaf variety check out crimson queen. I have all of the above in FULL sun. Hi. Where are you? I'm in Mar del Plata, Argentina. A city near the sea. It would be fixed in your USDA zone 9. I have had Sankgo Kaku, Aconitiflollium, and a Shirasawanum Jordan. All of them were in large pots, covered from direct sun, and died. I watered them only when the soil was dry but still, they died. The following year, I watered before the soil got dry and then, they got fungal disease. The soil was a mixture of peat, bark, and humus. Pots were drilled at the bottom and the sides to improve air circulation. With just the hot air convected, they got scorched.
@Dr.Warren
@Dr.Warren 10 ай бұрын
I am in the south eastern United States (Alabama). I am right on the line of zone 7b-8a. If you are having issues with fungus I would recommend using copper sulphate or daconil to help control it. Also consider changing your potting mix ratios. The peat and humus will hold lots of water. I have my tress in a mix of pine bark and sand or sometimes just pine bark. The sand really doesnt do much except give the pot weight so the wind doesnt blow it over as easy.

@Dr.Warren
@Dr.Warren 10 ай бұрын
So I did some research and it looks like Tokyo has a very similar climate to what I have here in the southeast United States. My advice would be continue to water it and get it in a little more shade. It could still be alive and just dropped it leaves due to stress and may not leaf out again until next spring. One way to test to see if its dead is to try and bend a small branch. If it bends its alive. If it snaps its dead.

@@russd6691 , Keep the plant sheltered from the hot wind in summer, especially if it's on a rooftop in a pot. The hot wind in the summer months will shrivel the leaves real quickly. If you have the plant in a quick-draining medium or akadama, you may have to water it twice a day in the summer. I hope your plant bounces back next spring.
