As a Tool & Die Maker from the 80s we always had production workers in the shop. In those days it would take 4 years to get journeyman status and that involves a great deal of production and endless school time. Of course that was long ago, unknown today's process. 😊

Terminology is important and in the shop everyone knows who's who. The pecking order evolves. But for simplicity and story telling, best to keep it under as few umbrellas as possible.

I was an instructor at a building trades school. I would tell my students you don’t need $3000 of top brand tools or a $40,000 truck. You need a basic set to get you started. As you advance you’ll earn the money to buy better tools.

As someone that's been down that road. I somewhat disagree. You don't need the fancy platinum truck for sure, but... Buy once. Cry once. The good tools & warranty will get you much further in the long run with less headaches then cheap tools.

It is fascinating how as more kids are being “educated” they seem to be getting less intelligent and wise. My Grandparents never went to college but they seemed to have wisdom and a knowledge of history, politics and common sense that is nearly non existent among the “educated” today. Although I learned so much from them I include myself in that.

My buddies family owned machine shop in Addison Il produced some of the finest pipe plugs money can buy - American steel , American melt , produced on machines from the 40’s - granted they have some newer machines as well but they are turning a profit and expanding their line / he’s proud of he’s families product and proud they use American melt - American steel - time we said enough is enough and get American’s back to machining that great stuff we used to make here

I like well made tools and while some of my tools are from the USA most anymore seem to be from Germany as they can make some great, well engineered tools. As an electrician I started back in the 90s with Klein, Channel-Lock, and Crescent being the go to tools; now I still use some Klein but seem to prefer Knipex, Wiha, and Wera tools. I’m amazed at how much easier the trades have gotten as tools, especially battery tools, have gotten over the years; with that though they’ve gotten so much harder to find good workers. Glad for all Mike has done, to bring the trades back into the forefront and in helping those with want and drive to get into the trades.

It was dirty, old, loud, and the equipment was constantly breaking due to being either 60 years old or being run constantly. I don't blame young people for not wanting to work in places like this. You will be worked like a dog for no money and disrespected every second of it.
