How are thermowell calculations made? Which designs are available for thermowells? Which design is best suited to my application? How is wake frequency calculation used to optimise thermowell design?
These are important questions, since thermowells perform very important tasks:
🛡️ Protection of the temperature sensors
👷 Protection of personnel and environment
✅ Cleaning and replacement of the temperature probes during running operation

As a rule, thermowells are very long-lasting. However, due to the Kármán vortex street and under critical conditions, they can oscillate. In extreme cases, this can lead to the thermowell breaking off.
The wake frequency calculation can solve this problem and is generally an integral part of the design of any industrial plant. The American ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2016 standard is currently the most important valid standard worldwide for thermowells.

In about one third of the cases, a negative result may occur in the calculation.
In this case, the design of the thermowell must be changed in order to obtain a positive calculation result.
This can be done by optimising the strength of the thermowell in two ways:
✅ Shortening of the insertion length below the process connection
✅ Increasing the root or tip diameter of the stem
However, various parameters can limit the optimisation process, such as:
📌 Nozzle dimensions
📌 Minimum insertion lengths

Thermowells in ScrutonWell® design are a good alternative, and also for many other cases.
The helical design, which is used in a wide range of industrial applications, effectively suppresses vortex induced vibration. Thermowells in ScrutonWell® design are just as easy to install as their counterparts with conventional design.
