In recent weeks we’ve seen Mikel Arteta tweak his Arsenal tactics to move away from his favoured in possession shape of 3-2-5 towards more of a traditional 4-1-4-1 - using the full backs in dual roles: building up with inverted positioning but offering width and overlaps in the final third. So why has this had such a big impact for the Gunners?

The main thing with Ødegaard for me was his involvement across the whole pitch. His zone of influence was so much wider than it has been, and it benefitted us so much. A true 8 imo, playing as a 10 restricts how much he can give the team

Exactly......I feel he gets a bit restricted when he's only occupying the right half space but when he roams freely he gets to have more influence and exploit his passing range

They just needed jesus, saka, martinelli and odegaard to all start a game together that's all. The fact we're top despite having all these injuries is very impressive.

In my mind Jesus is the most important. When Eddie is on the pitch, the motion stops. The attacking flow just grinds to a halt.

To me it is tomiyasu overlapping, Zinchenko still spends most of the game in the center of the pitch but Tomiyasu is overlapping a lot more than Ben white has been. Theres been a huge improvement with Tomiyasu in the team

stop waffling. White has an incredible amount of overlaps under his belt. He also does it more often and to greater effect; in addition to that, he also ofers lobbed passes into space for Saka compared to Tomiyasu who passes the ball into feet to Saka getting him doubled a lot.

@@jomosezz3739 I mean recently. For most of this season I haven't seen White make many overlapping runs. In the short space of time Tomiyasu was starting he has been making loads of overlapping runs

the attack was never broken, jesus was just injured for the half the year, i dont get why people are making such a big deal about this. The attack was ureal last year because of the disruptive nature of jesus's play style, he attracts so many defenders to him and has the strength, the dribbling ability and passing ability to open up the spaces for martineli, saka and odegaard to be deadly in the final third, which also why btw arsenal dont need a striker and more than likely not sign one in january, because what arsenal really need is another 8 and or a defender, they're good everywhere else. Im not gonna go as far as to say jesus is underated, but people dont realise how transformative that guy has been for us since joining, the team from two years ago and the team from last year were completely different when all we really did was sign jesus and zinchenko

Makes we wonder if Kieran Tierney could have been a big player for us this year. Obviously nobody predicted the long term injury to Timber. It seems the way we’ve played lately would have suited him.

one of the reasons we needed replacements for Tierney was because of his injury record. And I think he is only back last week from like 2 months injured in Spain… his fitness is not reliable enough for title winning team anymore

@@007feck agreed, mentioning is current injury is like the butterfly effect. No saying what would have happened if he was in the Arsenal camp since pre season. That includes improvements to his game in our systems

I think the problem was just a slow start. Arsenal sacrificed squad chemistry and cohesion instead of starting 11 chemistry. And as you can see, when they bring on players? It helps them perform better because in pre-season, they tweaked a lot.

Funny enough Timber was probably the best fit for arsenals current system as he can invert and is very good defensively though they do still have the best defence in the league right now so Idk if it really matters now

early on season we should snatch up kudus or diaby, we need true baller or sprinter on the flank that would relief the physicality. Havertz experiment is not looking good on the eye, he is one expensive dummy on mf, i rather we play 2 no.8 in mf like esr & viera.

The key factor that is implied here but not explicitly mentioned is Rice's position. At the start of the season, Rice is only comfortable receiving the ball between the center backs and it forces a 3-2 at the back, where the 2 are the fullbacks. Which means they have to be more central in buildup and hence harder to overlap in the second phase. Now Rice is starting to look like an actual pivot in offense as well.
