Australia dominates the mining industry, the leading the charge is BHP, the largest mining company globally. From its humble beginnings in Broken Hill, Australia, in 1885 to its current status as a multinational metals and mining giant, BHP's journey is nothing short of remarkable.
UPDATE: As of earlier today, the BHP bid to buy Anglo American has failed. As per the Australian Financial Review: "BHP confirmed it had not been able to reach an agreement to secure the backing of Anglo’s board and so would not proceed. BHP must now walk away for at least six months as a result."
Today I’m talking a look at BHP's rich history, innovative techniques, and pivotal role in Australia's industrial development, including its contribution to iconic structures like the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We’ll discover how BHP's operations span across various minerals essential for modern industries, from copper and coal to iron ore and nickel, look into its groundbreaking move towards autonomous haulage, revolutionizing mining technology and enhancing efficiency and safety in operations. And explore BHP's commitment to sustainability and decarbonization, aiming for a greener future while meeting the world's resource demands.
From there, maybe I can uncover the reasons behind Australian mining companies' dominance on the global stage, from abundant natural resources to strategic geopolitical positioning and significant economic contributions.
We’ll also take a quick look at the the factors propelling BHP's ambitious bid to acquire Anglo American and further solidify its position as the undisputed leader in the mining industry.
Join me on this illuminating journey as we unravel the secrets behind Australia's mining success and BHP's ascent to becoming the behemoth of the mining world. Don't miss out on this thought-provoking exploration of one of the world's most influential industries.

The anti-competitive results of BHP buying Anglo American just cant be legal. its hard to believe no regulator stepped in to stop that. Decades ago I used to work for CRA (aka Con Rio Australia), that got swallowed by Rio Tinto that got swallowed by Anglo American, and now BHP is trying to swallow all that. Its nuts.

This video is straight out of BHP PR. Millions spent on all manner of greatness, but when it come to pollution, they promise all manner of stuff, without any evidence. Just like last time. Their gig 10 years ago promised all manner of stuff, by today. 5 years ago by today. Promises are full of but. All those hard luck stories they all hand me.

If they get the American company it’s definitely about tactics. The history helps to understand their future and growth prospects. Proud of their achievements is a good thing I thought❤

BHP are brilliant at cutting costs, underpaying critical employees, increasing work hours for maximum output, and saving money on basic employee benefits such as… critical supplies, a working sandwich toaster in a crib room that services 400+ mine workers, coffee cups on a regular several week period at a time, and an annual Christmas party for the employees who earn it billions of dollars.. 👍

This seems to be more about history than tactics. Why is it of concern, and what exactly is the point?

You said it best. Australia is geopolitically tied to the west, but conversely financially tied to Asia aka China... It's a lot easier for China to replace Australia as a supplier, then it is for Australia to find another China. BHP's future is also tied into all of this. The future is Shakey...

India and South East Asia is on the rise, we can capitalise on that. China on the other hand tried to buy from others and proved we aren’t so easily replaceable. The lucky country will find a way.
